Higuey Market (Punta Cana) Dominican Republic
Took this video while doing an excursion through Punta Cana Mike's Dominican Adventure Tours in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. In the early afternoon the tour took us for a walk through the local market in Higuey, Dominican Republic. This is the town in which most of the resort staff working in Punta Cana live. It was very interesting to see the everyday activities of citizens from a different culture. The Higuey market was a very busy place during our visit.

This brings back memories of my holidays in the DR, visiting Higuey and enjoying all that Punta Cana has to offer. The fascinating thing for me was the transport, and way scooters, and motorbikes were used. Enjoy the video.

Punta Cana is part of the Punta Cana-Bávaro-Veron-Macao municipal district, in the municipality of Higüey, in La Altagracia Province (the easternmost province of the Dominican Republic). The area has beaches and balnearios which face both the Caribbean and Atlantic, and it has been a popular tourist destination since the 1970s.
The Punta Cana area has an estimated population of 100,000, with a growth rate of six percent.[3] To the north, it borders the village and beach of Cabeza de Toro, and then the Bávaro and El Cortecito beaches. The nearest city, the 500-year-old Higüey, is 45 kilometres (28 mi) away, and it takes about an hour to drive there. Europeans, particularly Spanish hotel chains, own all but two of the 50+ megaresorts of the Punta Cana tourism destination.
The province’s 100-kilometre (62 mi) coastline tends to be mildly windy. The ocean waters are mainly shallows, with several natural marine pools in which visitors can bathe without any danger. From north to south, the main beaches are Uvero Alto, Macao, Arena Gorda, Bávaro, El Cortecito, Las Corales and Cabeza de Toro, all north of the cape; and Cabo Engaño, Punta Cana and Juanillo south of the cape.
Bávaro is an area starting from Cabeza de Toro until Macao Beach. As the hotels started to rise along the East coast, Bavaro itself became a center of services with shopping malls, fast-food stores, drug stores, fine restaurants, banks, clinics, workshops, supermarkets, and schools.

Escape from your resort for the day and check out a glimpse of the real Dominican Republic! After we pick you up from your hotel we'll embark on a cultural experience, driving through the country and learning about the local lifestyle from your experienced tour guide.
Our first stop is the home of a traditional Dominican family, where we take a short tour and talk to some of the family members. From there we stroll the grounds of the plantation and learn the process of making coffee and coconut oil; your guide will also be sure to point out local fruits and vegetation. Next is a stroll through the beautiful butterfly garden. Watch them flutter around as you learn a bit about the different varieties. As you make your way about a small gift shop, we'll view a chocolate demonstration where we watch workers making chocolate first hand. Don't worry, there are plenty of free samples! Plus the opportunity to buy some freshly made chocolate of different flavors. You also have the chance to buy the famous Mamajuana, cigars and other local products!
As we leave the plantation, enjoy the gorgeous scenery as we make our way to the city of Higuey. Along the way, we'll stop at a school to get a feel for how Dominican children spend their day. Your tour guide will discuss the school system and the teacher can answer any of your questions. As we enter Higuey, we'll visit the Basilica, a Roman Catholic Cathedral dedicated to Lady Altagracia, the patron saint of the Dominican Republic. Pay just $1 to enter and walk around this famous, impressive structure. From here we make our way back into the countryside to enjoy a buffet style Dominican lunch overlooking gorgeous mountain scenery. With bellies full of rice, beans and meat, we take a quick visit to the river to relax for a minute. Sit by the water and take advantage of the view for some great pictures!
Leaving the mountains, we head towards the sensational Macao Beach! Spend almost an hour enjoying this breathtaking coast. Refreshments are served while you take a refreshing dip in the waist high water. This is the perfect, relaxing way to end a wonderful day full of new and educational experiences. Country Adventure allows you to see parts of the country that you cannot see from your hotel. Join us on this cultural journey!

The major town in the district is Veron, now bigger than Higüey in territory, a spontaneous – and poor – urban development running along the original road from the west. Verón, last name of the French proprietor of a timberline business in the early 1930s, is now the base-city for hotel workers and related. It has, besides Bávaro, one of the only four gas stations in Punta Cana. The very next is located 48 kilometres (30 mi) west in Higüey, at the Fruisa crossroads, with a new Texaco gas station opened April 2010, 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) south of Macao beach, and the new Shell gas station close to the airport (on the highway Coral) opened at the end of 2010.
