HINO, Hometown of Japan's Last Samurai 新選組のふるさと日野
Hino City Tourism Association's official website for foreign visitors:
The Shinsengumi was the last group of samurai in feudal Japan. While, the group was mainly active in Kyoto, the Shinsengumi’s hometown is actually Hino City in Tokyo. The vice-commander of the Shinsengumi, Hijikata Toshizo, was born and raised in the city, and many prominent members of the force honed their swordsmanship with him at Hino’s dojo.

New commemorative EasyCard features Yellow Tiger Flag of the Republic of Formosa
The National Taiwan Museum has collaborated with the EasyCard Corporation to release a special commemorative card featuring the “Yellow Tiger Flag” which represented the short-lived Republic of Formosa. The flag was used briefly when local gentry set up their own state in objection to the Qing Dynasty’s ceding of Taiwan to Japan following the Sino-Japanese War in 1895. The flag has been part of the museum’s collection for more than a century and in March was declared a national treasure. Collaboration with EasyCard is expected to draw more attention to this unique period of Taiwan’s history.Curtains open to mark the official unveiling of an EasyCard with the image of the Yellow Tiger Flag. It’s the first time that a national treasure has adorned an EasyCard. The new edition will go on sale May 11.Chen Chi-mingDirector, National Taiwan Museum We want people who either collect or use this card to have a better understanding of Taiwan and historical events and to know about the significance of the Republic of Formosa’s Yellow Tiger Flag. After its defeat in the Sino-Japanese War of 1895, China ceded Taiwan to Japan as part of the Treaty of Shimonoseki. Then-governor of Taiwan Tang Ching-sung and local gentry who objected to the island’s transfer to Japan in response established the Republic of Formosa, Taiwan’s first democracy and a state which they represented with the Yellow Tiger Flag. The flag is more than a century old and is one of the national treasures held by the National Taiwan Museum.Kenneth Lin Chairman, EasyCard Corp. This is the flag of the Republic of Formosa. Though the nation was short lived, we are pleased that EasyCard can cooperate with the National Taiwan Museum to highlight Taiwan''s way of life which is freedom and democracy.Four different versions of the Yellow Tiger Flag EasyCard will be available with some 20,000 cards expected to be issued. Many are hoping that greater circulation of this historical flag will spark more interest in Taiwan’s history.
