各地には、山・鉾・舞台などの大きな構造物の出る祭が少なくない。そのうち、滋賀県長浜市を中心として分布するものは曳山の名で知られ、祭礼の日、その上で子ども歌舞伎を演ずるのが特色である。展示の曳山は、長浜市高月町雨森に伝わったもの、文政九（1826）年の製作である。祭礼にあたっては、正面と左右に舞台を張り出し、ちょうちんで美しく飾る。
The “Nagahama Hikiyama Festival” is a festival that began in Nagahama during the Edo period (1603-1868 CE), and is now a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). Every year in April from the 9th~17th, crowds gather to see the hikiyama be paraded around town, in addition to a variety of events being held. Hikiyama is a type float pulled manually with ropes that is utilized in festivals, and Nagahama’s hikiyama are full of carvings and metal decorations that were common in the Edo period.
The National Museum of Ethnology, also called “Minpaku”, was opened in 1977 as a museum and research center. Its galleries display colorful cultural exhibits from nine world regions which include original artifacts as well as video, audio, and photographic materials. This museum is located on the other side of the park’s rose garden, across from the Japan Folk Crafts Museum.

In Shiga Prefecture, Japan, Nagahama's most famous festival features authentic kabuki plays performed by boys in mid-April. A few ornate floats on wheels serve as the stage for talented young actors. Comprehensive English documentary of Nagahama Hikiyama Matsuri festival events held on April 9–16 in Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. The first 10 min. show an overview of the festival. This video will enable you to understand and enjoy the festival much better. The more you watch, the more details are presented including interviews, local food, festival history, and Nagahama Castle. In late Nov. 2016, the festival became one of the 33 Yama, Hoko, and Yatai float festivals in Japan inscribed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

A Half Day Walking Tour along Old Hokkoku Street in Central Nagahama, Shiga Pref. (长滨市内半天游览沿旧北国街道)
The half day course (approx., 4 hours), in which sightseers can admire the retro-inspired atmosphere in the old castle town. Since Nagahama faces Lake Biwa and was located at a strategically important place, people here like the people in the Andos, boosted up their power in industry and commerce with the aid of Hideyoshi’s policy of remitting agricultural taxes. (The Andos used to be one of the dominant townsmen.) That gorgeous Hikiyama festival, which was registered UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016, has been maintained with the people’s enthusiasm.
Guests can also enjoy the modern craftworks of elaborate plastic models at the Kaiyodo Figure Museum along the old Hokkoku-kaido road.

Koka (甲賀, Kōka, also commonly pronounced Kōga) is a rural city in Shiga Prefecture, not far from Kyoto. Together with neighboring Iga, Koka can be considered the homeland of the ninja, and it features a couple of ninja related attractions.
What is Ninja?
Ninja is a person who served for a lord of manor or feudal lord from 1493 to 1573(the Sengoku Period), whose mission included sneaking into the enemy’s camp, conducting espionage, working out a plot and taking on an assassination.Since early times, Koka's proximity to Kyoto, in addition to its rugged terrain, made it a good hiding location for those seeking shelter, such as losing parties of battles. It was from such independently minded, self-governing families that ninja and their skills developed.
The mountains west of central Koka are also home to the Miho Museum, a unique museum whose interesting structures are blended in with the natural environment.

Japan Trip: Shochikuza Theater kabuki performance & musicals, Osaka Moopon
The Shochikuza Theater is the utmost location to see kabuki performances in Osaka. The theater was built in Western style and opened in 1923 with a seating capacity of just over 1000. English headsets are not available at Shochikuza Theater, but English program books can be purchased at the information counter. Kabuki performances are usually scheduled in five runs per year, each lasting three to four weeks.
Ticket prices vary depending on performance. Typically range between 4000 and 15000 yen.
