Sri Lanka BABY SEA TURTLES - Hikkaduwa Beach

Today we saw Sri Lanka baby sea turtles hatching and released them into the wild! Another bucket list item checked. Hikkaduwa Beach is famous for it’s wild sea turtles and public turtle hatchery ran by the coast guard right in Southern Sri Lanka. Also known as one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka, Hikkaduwa gave us an unforgettable memory that we will never forget. Watch this vlog to find out where to see turtles in Sri Lanka!

We got to Hikkaduwa beach early in the morning and we were sad to learn there were no baby sea turtles being released into the ocean that morning. We then decided to head over to a turtle hatchery north of Hikkaduwa Beach to see if they would release any sea turtles that evening. Unfortunately, we didn’t have any luck there either and the turtle hatchery was quite sad. All of the turtles were confined in smaller tanks and we weren’t sure how humane the whole program was.

A nice local gentleman told us that the local Sri Lankan coast guard would be releasing turtles that night, so we went back to Hikkaduwa Beach to check in with them. They confirmed they would release baby sea turtles that night, but not until 6pm.

With 5 hours to kill, we walked around the beaches in Sri Lanka and enjoyed some of the local shops in Hikkaduwa town. A bit later, we went to turtle beach, also known as turtle point, to feed the huge green turtles that come to feed every night at 5pm. We got so lucky to see 5 giant wild sea turtles and feed them with our own hands! If you’re looking to see turtles in Sri Lanka, this is definitely the spot.

Last but certainly not least, we went to the coast guard to wait for the baby sea turtle release. Our hearts were broken when we heard that there wouldn’t be a turtle release because not enough of the eggs had hatched. Luckily, they saw how sad we were and agreed to do a smaller scale wild sea turtles release! We highly recommend coming to visit the Coast Guard on Hikkaduwa beach instead of visiting a turtle hatchery in Sri Lanka. The coast guard runs a completely free operation and can ensure the turtles are released into the while the second they are ready unlike the hatcheries.

Hikkaduwa & Hikkaduwa Lagoon, Sri Lanka Part 1 - VLOG #20

We recently got back from a 3 week trip exploring different areas in Sri Lanka. This video is part of a series of our adventures in Sri Lanka starting on the South West coast and making our way up through the interior part of Sri Lanka.

We spent 4 days in Hikkaduwa. This beachy paradise has great surfing, awesome beachfront restaurants, and very laid back atmosphere. We were there in the middle of March and couldn't believe how few people were there. We expected it to be crowded and touristy but it wasn't at all. The surf was fun sized with a beach break for beginners and a nice reef break (right and left) for more advanced surfers.

Hikkaduwa (හික්කඩුව) is a small town on the south coast of Sri Lanka located in the Southern Province, about 17 km (11 mi) north-west of Galle and 98 km (61 mi) south of Colombo.

Hikkaduwa CORAL REEF Best SNORKELING Place in SRI LANKA????????

The Hikkaduwa Coral Reef is a National Marine Park. It’s got its status as National Park in 2002 to protect the reef from further degradation due to the 1998. In the meantime the reef is recovering considerably and is regaining its beautiful colours. It also became the status of National Park to prevent the reef from further damage due to human activity. The reef can be visited by glass bottom boats, but also as a diving safari under guidance of experienced scuba divers. Moreover the reef is also very suitable for snorkeling. Hikkaduwa National Park can only be visited during the dry season, which is between November and April. Outside that period the sea is mostly too rough to visit the coral reef. If you want to see coral reefs outside this season, you should travel to Pigeon Island near Trincomalee, where you can also watch the beauty of the underwater gardens in its full extend.

Hikkaduwa is approximately 99km away from Colombo along the Southern coastal belt of Sri Lanka and is home to Hikkaduwa Beach Hotel. This place is one of my personal favorites in the world and I have visited this place for the past six years. This is where you can really sit back, relax and enjoy life. This relatively small stretch of coast is loaded with a lot of stuff to do, or if you don’t feel like doing anything that’s totally fine. With many resorts and homestays located right on the beach, you wake up to the sound of the ocean and you can right away feel the laid back feeling of the place.

The food is delicious and cheap, the climate is tropical perfection and the sea is warm. This is also one of the oldest tourist spots in Sri Lanka so they are used to tourist and it’s a very safe environment for everybody. Here are some things to do in Hikkaduwa!

We stayed in Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka for a week, and we had a great time there! We found the cutest little café with the best smoothie bowls, we went shopping for dresses and kimonos (well, one of us did...), and we spent as much time as possible in our wonderful pool where we soaked up the sun before we took the train back to Colombo to get on a plane back to Europe.

Ps. I know I say that using data was expensive... It actually wasn't. We used a couple og GBs per day and paid about 2 USD per day :)

The name of the café is Mika Wu, and we highly recommend it!

В этот раз мы провели незабываемые 10 дней в городе Хиккадува. Встречали самые красивые закаты, купались под дождем, кормили бурундуков из рук, пробовали местную кухню..были в местном храме, где обучают детей Буддизму. И многое-многое другое:)
