Hikone Castle Museum is located within the restored building of the palace on the castle grounds, which served as the government office of Hikone Domain during the Edo Period (1603-1868). The museum displays a variety of artifacts, artworks, Noh masks, tea utensils, old manuscripts, and more.

Completed in 1622 after more than 20 years of intense labor, Hikone Castle, a hilltop castle, survived many wars and calamities is one of Japan’s very few original castles entirely build in wood, unlike Osaka and Aichi Castle for example.
Hikone Castle's beautiful three-storied keep features a unique design that combines multiple different architecture styles, explaining why the castle keep has been designated as one of Japan’s national treasures, a distinction only held as of today by four other castle keeps including Himeji-jo, Matsumoto-jo, Inuyama-jo and finally Matsue-jo.

After a construction period of twenty years, Hikone Castle (Hikonejo) was completed in 1622. The hilltop castle served as the seat of the Ii daimyo (feudal lords) until the end of the feudal age in 1868.
Hikone Castle is an original castle, that is to say it survived the post feudal era without undergoing destruction and reconstruction. Most of the inner moats, walls, guard houses and gates also remain intact besides the castle’s main keep. Furthermore, parts of the castle's palace buildings have been reconstructed, giving visitors a good impression of a relatively complete Japanese feudal castle. Hikone Castle's three storied castle keep is relatively small but displays a unique design that combines multiple different architecture styles. This is one reason why the castle has been designated a national treasure, the highest designation for cultural properties in Japan, held by only three other castles, Himejijo, Matsumotojo and Inuyamajo. Visitors can enjoy views over the castle grounds and the city by climbing the steep stairs on the inside of the castle keep to the top floor.
The approach to the hilltop castle keep is also interesting. It includes a spiral ramp onto a wooden bridge that can be easily destroyed in case of an attack. There are also several turrets which can be inspected from the inside as well as a large bell that is still rung several times per day to tell the time. A large store house and a horse stable stand near the castle's main gate.
The grounds of Hikone Castle turn into a popular cherry blossom spot in spring like many castle in Japan. The best season for full bloom-cherry blossom is usually in mid April. Not a cherry blossom spot but a place of considerable scenic beauty is Genkyuen Garden located at the base of castle, just outside of the inner moat.

At the base of the castle hill stands the Hikone Castle Museum whose main attraction is a partial reconstruction of the former palace buildings. The buildings, which include multiple tatami rooms, corridors and gardens, served as the government offices of the lords and have been reconstructed in the 1980s with great care according to excavations. Ordinary exhibition rooms display the clan's family treasures, including arms and armor, kimono, music instruments and documents.

Japan Vlog #9- Hikone City
This is my ninth daily vlog from my trip as an exchange student to Shiga, Japan in the summer of 2013. This video is from July 6, 2013. My host family took me to Hikone City, where we visited Hikone Castle and shopped and dined at Viva City. We also had a small party with some of my host sister's friends. Enjoy, and Thanks for watching!
Hikone Castle Museum:Red Lacqured Samurai Armour suits on Display!
This is the second part of the three part series covering Hikone Castle. Today we take a look inside the museum. During the month of August they had a special exhibition of Samurai suits of the Li family called The Li Family's Red Guards!
On display also musical instruments, pottery, tea ceremony utensils, old documents going back to the time of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, hanging scrolls of calligraphy, painted screens. There is a Noh theatre and several Noh masks on display!
The samurai suits are amazing, Red Lacquered and beautifully decorated, everyone whore them in Li's army. It must have been an amazing site, the whole army decked out like that, fierce looking and highly skilled!

Hikone Castle - Week Four
This week I had the opportunity to visit Hikone Castle, see Hikonyan, and check out a cat cafe.

Hikone Castle Final - Hikonyan performance and museum
This part is pretty cool, it shows Hikonyan and stuff and we played Rock paper scissors. I also show a bit of the museum which is really cool too but, the part with all of the swords and armor are closed off until March. I'll probably come again when cherry blossoms bloom so I'll have a chance to show it then.

Hikone Castle The Genkyu-en Gardens!
This is the third and final episode about Hikone castle and we take a look at the Genkyu-en garden.
Along these endearing paths you will find representations of Chikubu Island and Oki-no-shiraishi (a stand of white rocks to the west in Lake Biwa). Borrowing the idea from Chinese tradition (specifically, the Shosho-Hakkei of Lake Dong Ting, Hunan Province), eight scenic beauties were identified in Omi (present Shiga Prefecture) and are called the Omi Hakkei. Each of these is also represented in the garden.
The garden was named after Emperor Zuan Song's palace in ancient China. It is a classic example of early Edo landscaping, and has been designated a natural scenic beauty.
It's a very beautiful garden and worthwhile your visit. Hope you enjoyed this series on Hikone castle, stay tuned to my channel for more entertaining videos about Kyoto and Nara. See ya....
