The white samurai cat ひこにゃん Hikonyan is the mascot of Japan's 彦根 Hikone city. It's making an appearance at the Hikone Castle Museum.

A castle town located in the north of Shiga prefecture, Hikone is a great place to wander around for a day. The castle is one of the few in Japan which are still the original castle and there are some beautiful views of the lovely Lake Biwa from the keep.
Yume-kyobashi Castle Road is full of restaurants and cafes along with traditional Japanese omiyage and food is definitely worth a look and of course the city’s character, Hikonyan, can be found everywhere!

Genkyuen Garden, Hikone Shiga - 玄宮園 彦根 - Japan As It Truly Is
Genkyuen was a feudal lord's traditional Japanese landscape garden with an elegant pond, trails, and tea houses. It's a must see place.
Genkyuen sits beside Hikone Castle and offers a beautiful way to add some variety in the normal blur of endless temples and shrines. Genkyuen was started in 1677 and took 7 years to complete. It is sadly ignored by many tourists though, and the tourist guidebook experts as usual fail to do it justice.
While Himeji Castle gets a lot more attention, Hikone Castle is also one of the few surviving originals, not another reconstructed fake like most of the others. Both are about 50 minutes by train with a good connection from Kyoto Station.
Both Genkyuen and Hikone Castle are about 20 minutes on foot from Hikone Station.

My host family took me to Hikone City, where we visited Hikone Castle and shopped and dined at Viva City. We also had a small party with some of my host sister's friends. Hikone Castle in Cherry Blossom Season - 彦根城 - Japan As It Truly Is
Hikone is one of the original surviving castles, shown here at the best time to see it - the peak of cherry blossom season.
Construction was started in 1604 and completed in 1622. For the Kansai area, Himeji is the most famous and Japan's best, but Hikone is well worth seeing as well, and while many of Japan's old castles were lost to fire, war, or dismantling in the Meiji Era, Hikone Castle is one of the few surviving originals - it is not a reconstruction or facade put over a concrete building. It's also one of the best cherry blossom secrets in the region, with fewer crowds - and this was taken at its very peak of beauty.

Completed in 1622 after more than 20 years of intense labor, Hikone Castle, a hilltop castle, survived many wars and calamities is one of Japan’s very few original castles entirely build in wood, unlike Osaka and Aichi Castle for example.
Hikone Castle's beautiful three-storied keep features a unique design that combines multiple different architecture styles, explaining why the castle keep has been designated as one of Japan’s national treasures, a distinction only held as of today by four other castle keeps including Himeji-jo, Matsumoto-jo, Inuyama-jo and finally Matsue-jo.

Strolling around Hikone city in Shiga prefecture.
Hikone is my favorite city in Japan because the ambience here is very traditional, warm, quite, appealing and stunning. However, not so many foreigners visit or even know about Hikone.
