Places to see in ( Freshwater - UK )
Places to see in ( Freshwater - UK )
Freshwater is a large village and civil parish at the western end of the Isle of Wight, England. Freshwater Bay is a small cove on the south coast of the Island which also gives its name to the nearby part of Freshwater. Freshwater sits at the western end of the region known as the Back of the Wight or the West Wight which is a popular tourist area.
Freshwater is close to steep chalk cliffs. It was the birthplace of physicist Robert Hooke and was the home of Poet Laureate Alfred Lord Tennyson. Freshwater is famous for its geology and coastal rock formations that have resulted from centuries worth of coastal erosion. The Arch Rock was a well-known local landmark.
Freshwater's beach is very popular. It is mostly sandy but it is also covered in chalk from the nearby cliffs, which is frequently gathered by tourists as souvenirs. Freshwater features an excellent example of a surviving Victorian Beach hotel, The Albion. The Albion was built around the time Freshwater became popularised as a coastal resort, and is still popular today. However, the heavy storms which often lift rocks and other debris from the beach means that the building's exterior walls often have to be repainted, with cracks, chips and dents in the walls often being repaired too.
The hills above Freshwater are named after Tennyson. On the nearby Tennyson Down is a Cornish granite cross erected in 1897 in tribute to Tennyson, by the people of Freshwater, and other friends in England and America. There is also a hill in the area called 'Hooke Hill', named for Robert Hooke. All Saints' Church, Freshwater is one of the oldest churches on the Isle of Wight, and was listed in the Domesday survey of 1086.
Dimbola Lodge, the home of Julia Margaret Cameron and now a photographic museum, is in the village of Freshwater Bay, which is part of Freshwater. There is also a tearoom and bookstore. Tennyson's son, Hallam donated land for a new church in Freshwater Bay. Hallam's wife Audrey suggested that the church be named for St. Agnes. St. Agnes' Church, Freshwater was consecrated on 12 August 1908.
Freshwater was the site of the largest station on the Freshwater, Yarmouth and Newport Railway that operated from 20 July 1889 to 21 September 1953. Freshwater is near the source of the Western Yar, a river whose estuary runs north to Yarmouth. Freshwater Marshes are a Site of Special Scientific Interest,
At the western end of Freshwater Bay on a bluff are the remains of Fort Redoubt, also known as Fort Freshwater or Freshwater Redoubt, a Palmerston Fort. Fort Redoubt was built in 1855-1856 to protect Freshwater Bay, and was in use until the early 20th century. It was sold by the military in 1928. Presently, part of it is a private residence, and other portions are being developed as holiday flats.
Freshwater is linked to other parts of the Island by Southern Vectis buses on route 7 and route 12 serving Totland, Yarmouth and Newport as well as intermediate villages. In the Summer, open top bus The Needles Tour and tourist service Island Coaster serve Freshwater Bay. Freshwater is on the Isle of Wight Coastal Path.

HOW TO BUILD ALL NATURAL POND WITHOUT LINER |LOW COST+MAINTENANCE |BIG BACK YARD WATER LAKE HABITAT
POND EQUIPMENT:
SHOVELS:
TOOL SETS:
PATIO, LAWN & GARDEN STUFF:
In this video i show you how i turned a water pit into an all natural pond without pond liner. This pond requires very low maintenance but some local conditions have to be met for it to function. Thank you for watching, feel free to subscribe or comment if you have questions.
hi there, I'm Carl the landscape guy and today I want to show you how I converted this back yard water pit into a 3000 square foot all natural pond. Now in a pond you want to try to keep the water level as constant as possible. The water level in this pit was fluctuating by about 2 to 3 feet depending on the weather. Rainwater would fill it up, especially during the winter months and during a hot summer there wasn't much water left in there. This situation was really unsightly especially since the main line of sight in this back yard is right on the water pit. In order to minimize the water level fluctuation, I started by connecting the pit to the closest rain water ditch. For that i used about 250 feet of pvc drainage piping, 6 inches in diameter. The pipes were installed on a slope that way the water from the ditch would flow into the pit. I chose only a small slope for the piping so that if the pond is filled up, water can flow backwards into the ditch not overflowing the pond. In addition to that, I connected the rain gutters of the house to the pipe to use existing water as efficient as possible. After these preliminary works I started cutting off all the grass, bushes and little trees about 15 feet around the edges of the pit. Now I could start re-modeling the new pond edges. Since no pond liner is used and all water in the pond will be rain or ground water there will still be small water level fluctuations. That's why I took away the sloping terrain and created a steeper edge. With this relatively steep edge even if the water level fluctuates the water surface will stay about the same. With this 2 ton excavator it took me one day to finish the pond edges. The pond has a depth of about 6 feet. An all natural non liner pond only works on sites with fine soil like clay or loam which has a low co-efficiency of permeability or it also works if you have a high ground water level. Natural wells or brooks around a backyard make a perfect supply for natural ponds. Now it's time to flatten the soil around the pond and plant the first water plants. If you don't want to spend money on water plants you can go to local lakes or rivers to get regional plants you like. If you do so don't destroy natural wildlife habitat. Take only small plant offshoots, they will spread in their new habitat. If you want to put fish in your natural pond that's ok but wait until plants have grown and don't put too many fish in. Since it's a natural pond I didn't add any pumps and filters and I put in about 10 fish. If you feed the fish keep in mind that all nutrients put into the water will have to be clarified by the pond itself. If you add too many nutrients, algae will grow and the fish might suffer. I decided to add a few Stones and one bigger tree stump from the woods with moss on it. This use of regional materials helps to create an all natural character of the pond and improves its appearance. It helps to add only one or two eye catchers, otherwise your eye doesn't know where to look and it doesn't have the effect of creating a harmonic atmosphere . With this pond we look at a low maintenance level. Each fall I cut the grass and plants around the edges and that's about it. I hope this video was informative and helpful for you. If so I would appreciate a thumbs up. Feel free to subscribe for more videos on ponds, brooks, waterfalls and other garden stuff. Making a Mini Crawfish Farm Prt 5 - The Last Survivor
We had a good rain last night and this morning while drinking my coffee out front I saw this little lady crawfish heading for the hills. She was loaded with eggs ready to pop, so we took her to a local pond since mine had been ruined by the pesticides that the city and HOA were spraying. We wish her (Red) all the luck. This is the final chapter to my crawfish pond and I'm glad that it ended on a good note. Tight Lines! Pole Bender

Lake District, England - Visit Britain - Unravel Travel TV
The Lake District is a mountainous region in the Northwest of England its barren fells fast flowing streams and vast spans of water make this a place like no other in Britain. During the last Ice Age glaciers carved deep valleys in which nestle beautiful lakes like Coniston water. Other lakes of the district include Lake Windermere, England's largest natural freshwater lake. It's over a kilometre wide almost 17 kilometres long and up to 64 metres deep, it contains over 340 million cubic litres of water. As used expect plenty of river cruises and water sports activities can be found throughout this region. Beatrix Potters association with the Lake District has always been one of the big tourist draws to this most beautiful part of the country. In the village of Hawkshead many of Beatrix Potters original illustrations are kept, in this charming gallery. Beatrix sealed her bond with the Lake District by using the money from her books to buy a property called Hill Top Farm. She began to buy land specifically so that developers couldn't spoil what she thought the most beautiful countryside. When she died she left everything to the National Trust which at the time was one of the biggest legacies it had ever received, about 4000 acres of land, 14 farms and other assorted cottages including hilltop house itself donated so that the national trust would look after it forever for everyone. Today the Lake District is protected as a National Park but it remains the unspoilt landscape it always been thanks in at least some small part to the efforts of one Miss Beatrix Potter.

Is This England's Biggest Pillbox?
In this short vlog Liam heads out with youtuber Will (SuperPopBro) what has been called the 'monster' pillbox. It is located in the flat expanse of farmland east of Burnham-on-Crouch and Southminster on the very isolated yet peaceful Dengie Peninsula along the Essex coast. Back in 1940, this blockhouse would have been armed to the teeth with a 6 Bren light machine guns, a rifle, 4 Vickers medium machine guns, and a light anti-aircraft Lewis gun. Whilst the hypothetical effectiveness of the Home Guard against a German invasion has been questioned, there can be no doubt that this stronghold would have done a great deal to keep the Dengie marshes locked down until reinforcements arrived.
