Doi Mae Salong is a mountain in Thailand, part of the Daen Lao Range. It is in the northern part of Chiang Rai Province six km from the border with Burma. This mountain rises in Mae Fa Luang District. Its summit is near the town of Santikhiri which is built on the ridge.

Synopsis:
The people of Doi Tung (a region in Northern Thailand on the border with Myanmar) are facing a future full of potential. Conflicting interests could pull them in many different directions. The pursuit of wealth, better education and greater social acceptance within the wider society are inevitably bringing the outside world into Doi Tung. Traditional values, which are so important for personal identity and community cohesion, are being thrown into a new light. We consider the hopes and fears for the future of characters spanning the generation gap and socio-economic divide, questioning how they define their happiness.

Hike to 2225 meter peak of Doi Luang Chiang Dao (said to be 3rd highest in Thailand) in Chiang Daoi district, about 106km to the north of Chiang Mai, northern Thailand.
Trip period: 09 - 13 Dec 2005 including home stay in Karen hilltribe village.

왕실의 노력은 거기서 그치지 않았다. 고산족에게 생활 터전과 일자리를 마련하기 위해, 새로운 작물을 재배하는 법을 가르쳐주었다. “전 아카족이에요. 이것들은 제가 직접 재배한 거예요. 개발 프로젝트를 시작하기 전에는 이런 것은 심지 않았어요. 프로젝트를 시작하고 나서야 다양한 야채를 재배하게 된 거예요. 프로젝트 때문에 우리는 먹고 살만해졌어요” 프로젝트의 가장 적당한 작물은 바로 아라비카 커피다. 고산지대의 서늘한 기후 덕에 마약 재배지에서 커피 생산지로 탈바꿈할 수 있었다. 해발 1,300미터의 깊은 산속에서 자라는 아라비카 커피는 아카족에게 주요 수입원이다. 비와 바람을 고스란히 맞으며 청정 자연에서 자란 커피콩이다. 익었는지 한 번 먹어본다. “아직 이건 못 먹어요” 아카족에게 커피는 없어선 안 될 중요한 재산이 됐다. “지금 우리가 서 있는 땅은 옛날에 아편을 재배한 땅이었어요. 아편 재배를 중단 후 커피를 재배하게 됐고요. 날씨가 서늘한 편이어서 커피 품질이 아주 좋아요” 이곳에선 11월부터 이듬 해 2월까지 커피를 수확한다. 무국적이던 고산족에게 국적이 주어지고, 커피작물도 재배하게 하면서 삶의 질이 높아졌다. 마음껏 뛰어놀 수 있는 너른 축구장과 평온한 일상이 사람들에게 행복을 안겨준다. 직접 발로 뛰며 서민들의 삶을 돌보았던 푸미폰 국왕. “이 마을은 푸미폰 국왕의 마을이에요” 설명을 하던 마을주민이 갑자기 울기 시작했다. “국왕이 마을 주민의 삶을 많이 바꿔주신 것 같아요. 마을 개발프로젝트는 아주 훌륭했어요. 국왕이 아니었다면 다른 사람은 이런 프로젝트를 못했을 거예요. 그래서 우리는 푸미폰 국왕을 아주 사랑해요. 국왕이 우리 인생에 있어서 최고의 분인 것 같아요. 그 누구와도 비교할 수 없어요” 파괴 되어 가던 숲에 생명을 불어 넣고 삶의 터전을 마련한 아카족. 커피라는 희망의 싹으로 새롭게 태어난 마을이다.
