The Hillary Trail
The Hillary Trail, an adventurous four day, three night tramp, connects a network of existing regional park tracks and basic backpacker campgrounds through the native landscapes of the Waitakere Ranges. Named after the legendary explorer Sir Edmund Hillary, it epitomises the sense of adventure and personal achievement that Sir Ed himself championed and was renowned for. It's no walk in the park!
A big thanks to those AUT students who made this video!

Western Waitakeres: Hillary Trail
Two friends meet up on the wild west coast of New Zealand to hike 4 days on the Hillary trail from the Visitor Center to Piha.
THE HILLARY TRAIL, New Zealand, PIHA
In March of 2015 we walked part of the Hillary Trail trek across rugged country at Piha and at Karekare where they filmed the movie The Piano. It is a 1993 New Zealand drama film about a mute piano player and her daughter, set during the mid-19th century in a rainy, muddy town (must see movie)
Hillary Trail
as its names suggests, it is meant to be a challenge, and completion is designed to provide great satisfaction of a challenge conquered

Auckland's Wild West - Waitakere Ranges (Ft. HirayaTV)
A rugged scenery of Auckland, New Zealand just about 30-40min drive from CBD, a spectacular view of waterfalls, clifftops, beautiful beaches that you can also surf, but take note, these waves are massive, especially at Piha.
Our trip to Te Henga Walkway took us at about 1hr20min going to the clifftop, then while going down we did a side trip to the beach and took some pictures and videos along the way, and we even got lost and did go to a different route instead.
Enjoy our video, thank you.

The Hillary 2015
The Hillary is a ultra trail running event 80, 34 or 16km on the Hillary Trail, West of Auckland, New Zealand.
Massive thanks to Jody Arnott and the team from Ninmo Productions who captured the video of the 2015 version of The HiIlary.
Just 30 minutes from Central Auckland, New Zealand's largest city lie the Waitakere Ranges in which the reasonable new Hillary Trail weaves from South to North. The Hillary Trail is sold as a 3-4 day trek, named after New Zealand’s Sir Edmund Hillary, you have to agree with the Hillary Trails guardians, Auckland Council’s claim that the Hillary Trail epitomises the sense of adventure and personal achievement that Ed Hillary himself championed and was renowned for.
Since its opening the lure of the trail to runners has become strong with many New Zealand trail runners attempting and successfully completing the trail.
As a regular runner of the Hillary Trail, Shaun Collins from Lactic Turkey Events cannot resist the urge to organise an event along the Trail. It’s time to share this trail with the world!
There is no denying, this is a tough challenge – mentally and physically. With 3,700m climb, the current fastest time is 8 hours 44 minutes. Many would think this seems a long time for 75km but, those that have done would agree – this is no ordinary 75km. The event adds approximately 5km extra to the official Hillary Trail with a loop at the start, some extra distance at the end and a detour at Pararaha to avoid the beach section into Karekare as this is a scientific reserve as such no events are allowed on it. The 80km course follows the Hillary Trail from the Arataki Visitors Centre West of Titirangi all the way to Muriwai, via Huia, Whatipu, Karekare, Piha and Bethells.
The Trail follows a variety of terrain and scenery – many claim a magical pull of the trail and keep coming back for more. Stunning views throughout the trail, rugged West coast beaches, magnificent native bush including the hundreds of year old native Kauri trees. Past large waterfalls and sand dunes, along cliff tops or through marshlands – there is something for everyone.
Come along and Knock The Bugger off!

Omanawanui track
The Omanawanui track is considered one of the Waitakere's secret jewels, situated at Whatipu which is in the most Southern part of the Waitakere ranges.
Whatipu is a scientific reserve with a spectacular beach and wetland with on-site information about the area.
The track starts at Whatipu's car park, after a fair climb, the first lookout forks off to the right and is worth the short detour.
From there you follow the route back to the main track that goes all the way back to the main road which we followed back to the car park.
There is some Kauri trees on the route so please take the time to clean your gear at the cleaning stations to prevent kauri dieback
For more info about kauri dieback, please visit the link below:
The track vary from easy shaded sections to steep climbs but rewards you with stunning views!

WHATIPU TRACK AUCKLAND // NEW ZEALAND // PART 2
One of my favorite Auckland hikes as it leads to the beautiful Whatipu Lookout Point.
HIKING THE OMANAWANUI TRACK // AUCKLAND //NEW ZEALAND
PLEASE NOTE: ONLY PART OF THE TRACK IS CLOSED OFF AND NOT THE PART WE TOOK from the carpark.
In New Zealand and wondering what one of the most visited locations in Auckland are ? well Whatipu has many unexplored locations last week we explored the caves and this week we took the hike up to the lookout.
KEY POINTS:
- 1 hour hike and about 40 mins return on the same track down.
- Not a single person on the track so it was all ours.
- The lookout was AMAZING
- Campground in the same location
- Closest shops are about 30 min away in Huia
- 1 hour drive from city (20 min of road is unpaved)
YES i tried vlog style this week :)
The island was Paratutae island
