Merry Horses at Hillside Animal Sanctuary in Norfolk

Before their lives had been endangered by flood water, this herd of horses, including pregnant mares and foals, had been abandoned on wasteland and were only being fed by kind members of the public who had taken pity on them.
Fortunately for these horses, following public concern, the authorities intervened and asked if Hillside could take them in to save them from further danger and suffering. Even prior to the flooding, Trading Standards had already removed some of the horses from the area on welfare grounds. When their field flooded they became trapped on a railway embankment and, to keep them from starving, Fire crews launched dinghies and transported hay to them across the deep water.
Once the waters had subsided, we were pleased to take in the twenty new arrivals from the Sully area and this became one of six major equine rescues we have undertaken in 2012.

FARMER TURNED SANCTUARY OWNER! England's first farm animal sanctuary.
Janet Taylor was a sheep farmer who decided she could no longer cope with the cruelty anymore, so opened up Britain's first ever farm animal sanctuary 25 years ago, The Farm Animal Sanctuary. She was kind enough to let me come and spend a day filming her and her animals. I loved hearing her unique story and am so happy that I can share it with you all.
If you would like to donate to the sanctuary, here is the link -
I am Roxy and I am a zoologist and wildlife presenter who is keen to share my love of animals and the natural world with others. My videos are not only about seeing animals, but also how my lifestyle (vegan and low impact) helps to save wildlife and our planet too. I hope to inspire others to get outside, enjoy nature, and get involved with conservation efforts.

Deborah Wilson at Norfolk Meat Traders
In 2016 Hillside Animal Sanctuary Investigators took undercover
footage of 'non-stun' slaughter at Simply Halal in Banham, Norfolk.
We filmed their manager, Deborah Wilson just standing by as
sheep suffered terrible cruelty.
Our footage prompted the Food Standards Agency to suspend the
slaughter, but shortly afterwards, a new company 'Norfolk Meat Traders' was set up on the same site, with Deborah Wilson as director.
In 2017 Hillside were again able to secretly film there and we were shocked to see Deborah Wilson now overseeing the killing of horses and ponies.
We have now been made aware that she organised 'unauthorised' slaughter of horses at the premises and the FSA have suspended their licence pending a full investigation.
The following footage, which some people may find upsetting, shows brief clips of the 2016 and 2017 footage we filmed...

In addition to giving supporters a chance to meet the rescued animals they are so kindly supporting, our Open Days also help to generate the vital funds needed to feed and care for the animals.
Here is a short film of conditions on the Sanctuary taken yesterday afternoon which we hope will explain our reluctant decision to cancel this Sunday's Open Day at Frettenham. Thank you for your understanding and support. Wendy

Hillside Shire Horse Sanctuary (June 2009)
For more information about Hillside, please see their website:
The Hillside Shire Horse Sanctuary in West Runton is well worth a visit. There's something mystical about the shire horses. There are lots of other animals to see too, and it's for a great cause as most of them were rescued from some kind of cruelty, or neglect.
It is a bit of a wake up call seeing how animals can be mis-treated in order to bring us cheap food. Without being at all in your face, it may make you question your eating habits, and that can only be a good thing. (I say that as a meat eater)
I wish there were more Hillside's in the world.
