Het schip is in Nederland gebouwd. Het werd op 21 mei 1951 te water gelaten en heette Midsland. In1979 kreeg het schip de naam Hilma Hooker.

In de zomer van 1984 had de Hilma Hooker motorproblemen op zee en werd naar de haven van Kralendijk, Bonaire gesleept. Het werd toen al in de gaten gehouden door de drugsbestrijdingsinstanties. Gedokt bij de Town Pier, gingen de lokale autoriteiten aan boord van het schip voor een inspectie. Er werd een dubbele wand/schot ontdekt en daarachter werd 25.000 pond (11.000 kg) marihuana gevonden. De Hilma Hooker en haar bemanning werden vervolgens vastgehouden terwijl de lokale autoriteiten op Bonaire naar de eigenaars van het schip zochten. Deze werden nooit gevonden.

Het schip kwijnde maandenlang weg en begon aanzienlijke hoeveelheden water op te nemen. Er werd gevreesd dat het schip zou zinken en het maritieme verkeer zou verstoren. Na vele maanden werd de Hilma Hooker op 7 september 1984 naar een ankerplaats gesleept. Als gevolg van vele lekken begon de Hilma Hooker water te maken. In de ochtend van 12 september 1984 rolde de Hilma Hooker over haar stuurboordzijde en verdween in de volgende twee minuten.

De Hilma Hooker kwam tot rust op een zandvlakte tussen twee koraalrifsystemen in. Het wrak is nu een belangrijke attractie voor duikers geworden. Het schip ligt op ongeveer 30 meter (100 voet) diepte en biedt met 72 meter (240 voet) lengte voldoende ruimte voor verkenning.

Bonaire's most popular shipwreck dive site - HIlma Hooker is a crowd favorite. The ship is a 236-foot Dutch freighter built in Krimpen aan den IJssel, the Netherlands. This ship was impounded once authorities found 25,000 pounds of marijuana onboard. This dive site is great for seeing large tarpon and other schools of fish, and has a fun dive profile with max depth around 100 '.

The footage was shot with a GoPro at 1080p 60fps and a backscatter flip red filter for 20-50' (mostly useless due to depth). I also had a Sea Dragon - Sea Life 2500 dive light.

In the summer of 1984, the Hilma Hooker had engine problems at sea and was towed to the port of Kralendijk, Bonaire. It was already under surveillance by drug enforcement agencies. Docked at the Town Pier, local authorities boarded the ship for an inspection when her captain was unable to produce any of the requisite registration papers. A false bulkhead was discovered, and held within was 25,000 lb (11,000 kg) of marijuana. The Hilma Hooker and her crew were subsequently detained while the local authorities on Bonaire searched for the vessel's owners, who were never found.

The ship languished under detention as evidence for many months and through general neglect of her hull she began to take on considerable amounts of water. It was feared that she would sink at the main dock on the island and disrupt maritime traffic. After many months of being tied to the pier and pumped of water, on September 7, 1984 the Hooker was towed to an anchorage. As the days passed, a slight list became noticeable. The list was even more obvious one morning. The owner was still not coming forward to claim the ship and maintain it so the many leaks added up until on the morning of September 12, 1984 the Hilma Hooker began taking in water through her lower portholes. At 9:08 am she rolled over on her starboard side and, in the next two minutes, disappeared.

The Hilma Hooker sank off the coast of Bonaire in 1984, and landed on its side in 100ft of water. This is one of my favorite wreck dives. At the end of the dive, Murph, our dive master, shows how to get a manicure from cleaner shrimp.

Diving Bonaire's most famous shipwreck: the Hilma Hooker, a general cargo ship that is 72 meters long, 11 meters wide and with over 1 ton of weight.

It had a few other names before it was busted as a drug smuggler with 25.000 pounds of marijuana, just off the coast of Bonaire, in 1984. The most famous name, and the one that can actually still be read on the hull of the wreck is 'William Express'.

A few different theories can be heard about its sinking, but the fact is divers all around the world are happily making it one of Bonaire's busiest dive sites.

It's laying on the beginning of the double reef area, at 29m / 95ft of depth on its starboard.

Penetration is only allowed if you have the appropriate training.

The Hilma Hooker is a freighter 236 Feet (72M) in length that sank in 1984 following a search and drug bust by the local authorities. The wreck lies at the beginning of the double reef system. With light to moderate currents and an average depth of 60-95 feet, it is recommended for advanced divers. It can be accessed by shore or boat dive. Divers who penetrate the wreck should have some wreck and deep dive training and equipment. Tarpons are often around. Don’t overlook the reef, in this particular dive we were lucky to also find a sea horse.
