The Almora Story | With Himadri Hans Handloom
Almora, Uttarakhand, India.
July 2019, we had the opportunity to visit one of Uttarakhand's many beautiful districts - Almora. The trip was made possible by Himadri Hans Handloom, an initiative by The Hans Foundation in the Himayalas.
Himadri Hans Handloom ia a social organisation, which has been working towards empowerment of women artisans for 20 years, in one of the Himalayan region in India called, Almora, Uttarakhand. Himadri Hans Handloom is an initiative began with few local women of Almora district with the objective of getting the women out of the drudgery and reviving the dying art of weaving from hills.
After years of struggle and hard work, today the initiative has turned into two weaving centres, where almost 200 women are making world class handmade products. This initiative has not only helped women of hills, but also it has taken the local art to international level with our artisans expertise on fibres like Pure Cashmere, Alpaca, Lambswool and Merino. Our product line includes Shawl, Stole, Scarves, Throws, running fabric along with Hand knitted Caps, Gloves, Sweaters, scarves etc. We can proudly say that our processes are ethical and follows sustainable fashion norms. Clouds moving fast over mountains in the Western Himalayas of Garhwal, Uttaranchal in North India.
Uttarakhand , formerly Uttaranchal, is a state in the northern part of India. It is often referred to as the Land of the Gods due to the many holy Hindu temples and pilgrimage centres found throughout the state. Uttarakhand is mainly known for its natural beauty of the Himalayas, the Bhabhar and the Terai. On 9 November 2000, this 27th state of the Republic of India was carved out of the Himalayan and adjoining northwestern districts of Uttar Pradesh. It borders the Tibet Autonomous Region on the north; the Mahakali Zone of the Far-Western Region, Nepal on the east; and the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh to the south and Himachal Pradesh to the northwest. The state is divided into two divisions, Garhwal and Kumaon, with a total of 13 districts. The provisional capital of Uttarakhand is Dehradun, the largest city in the region, which is a railhead. The high court of the state is in Nainital.
Archaeological evidence support the existence of humans in the region since prehistoric times. Among the first major dynasties of Garhwal and Kumaon were the Kunindas in the 2nd century BCE who practised an early form of Shaivism. Ashokan edicts at Kalsi show the early presence of Buddhism in this region. During the medieval period the region was consolidated under the Kumaon and Garhwal kingdom. By 1803 the region fell to the Gurkha Empire of Nepal and with the conclusion of the Anglo-Nepalese War in 1816 most of modern Uttarakhand was ceded to the British as part of the Treaty of Sugauli. Although the erstwhile hill kingdoms of Garhwal and Kumaon were traditional rivals, the proximity of different neighbouring ethnic groups and the inseparable and complementary nature of their geography, economy, culture, language, and traditions created strong bonds between the two regions which further strengthened during the movement for statehood in the 1990s.

Real Healthcare Stories from the Himalayas - I
Hear this story of a woman, Breshwati Rana, from the upper Tons Valley, who gave birth to her child while walking down a mountain trail. This is real life in the remote upper Tons Valley.
***
Breshwati Rana was in the final weeks of her pregnancy and was expecting her baby any day. Most women in this region give birth at home in their villages. But this time, weak, recovering from tuberculosis and severely anaemic, she made a last-minute decision to rush to a hospital because she feared there might be delivery complications. Her labour pains had begun when she began the 5-hour walk down from her village down to the road and faced a 200km drive to the nearest quality hospital in Dehradun.
But she left it too late. Just an hour from the village, trying to cross a swollen stream she gave up. While her husband ran back to the village get help to carry her, she gave birth to a baby boy. Her mother who was along with her had to assist her with no training even as a traditional midwife. It was a woman helping another woman. They had nothing to cut the baby's placenta. They finally cut the placenta with a rusted blade found in the bushes. She then again walked back uphill to the village carrying the baby, minutes after giving birth.
***
This is a story that ended on a happy note. All three of Breshwati's children were born without any monitoring or assistance in the village. She decided to seek medical help only in her third pregnancy because she was too weak. It costs a lot of money and time to goto the nearest quality hospital, 200 kms away in Dehradun.
But many women in the Tons Valley are not so lucky.
***
We are trying to bring a hospital and doctors closer to these people. There are 20,000+ people living in this remote region without access to basic health services.
Almost all women in the Tons Valley in Uttarakhand give birth at home, in the fields or in the forest.
Pregnancies are not monitored in these remote villages. None of the women have access to sterile birthing kits & trained midwives.
We want to change this.
Help us start the 'Kalap Trust Community Hospital'
We have raised Rs 5,45,000 so far to setup our hospital. We need a total of Rs 23 lakhs.
This festival month, we are trying to reach 1,000 people who can donate at least Rs 1,000 each to help us inch closer to our goal!
Visit: kalaptrust.org/hospital
You can donate from there, payment gateway and bank details are listed there.
All donations to us are tax-exempt u/s 80G of the Income Tax Act 1961

If you cannot donate right now, help us spread the word, that is more important? Can you share this video? Do you want to email this? Do you want to WhatsApp it?

Thank You.

Our gratitude to Mayur Channagere & Team at PhotoMojo (photomojo.co.in), who made the trek up with us to the village to document these stories and publish them! Without their support, this would have not been possible.

This is how woolen clothes are made in Osla, Uttarakhand
Looms like this can be seen in most villages; but many of them, instead of being used to make clothes, now produce carpets and decorative woollen goods. In Osla village of Uttarakhand they still use these looms to make clothes.

Indian villagers venture into forest for community hunt
The Adi tribe organizes the 200-year-old “Bat Killing” festival in Arunachal. Like the previous years, hundreds of men, women and children of the community swarm into a natural cave, with bamboo poles and kill over a thousand bats as part of the festival. It is believed that the practice of killing bats once in a year helps keep the natural demographic balance of bats in the hill site.
Adis feel that the festival is an occasion to bond with their fellow tribesmen. The festival has always been a source of merriment and a family reunion for them. The community bat hunting is an annual festival steeped in hundred year’s tradition. They feel it as an occasion to bond with their family men. This is that time of the year when their family men disperse at different places reunite, hunt bats and feast on bat meat.
The ‘hunting festival’ is exclusively for a clan of Adis, but headman sometimes invites other tribes to be part of this bat-killing expedition.

The true believers - Nanda Devi Devotees...
The Nanda Devi Jat Yatra is held once in every 12 years in the District of Chamoli, Uttaranchal. During this two week long Yatra, thousands of devout pilgrims throng the region of Kumaon to pay respect to godess Nanda Devi. The royal family of Garhwal conducts the Nanda Raj Jaat to please the Isht-Devi, in order to seek blessings for a prosperous kingdom and the defeat of their enemies. In Chamoli Nanda Devi Rajjaat is organized once in 12 years.
The jaat starts from Nauti village near Karnprayag and goes upto the heights of Roopkund and Haemkund with a four horned sheep. After the havan-yagna is over, the sheep is freed with decorated ornaments, food and clothings and the other offerings are dischared. Special prayers and rituals are performed and the offerings are loaded on the four- horned Ram just like the things given to a daughter in her marriage are sent. The sheep is decorated like a bride, ready to leave for her husband's home. The scene becomes pathetic when the devotees, in tears, bid farewell to the Devi, as if they are bidding farewell to their own daughter.
Legends has it that Nanda Devi, consort of Lord Shiva left her village and went to the nanda devi parbat. Therefore when the yatra starts, heavy rain occurs as if the devi is crying. This yatra covers many villages and in between the Devi meets her sister in the Bhagwati village. The Raj Jat Yatra is held annually, in Garhwal.
The Raj Jat Yatra is held once every twelve years. This is a study of the once-in-12-year pilgrimage, shot over two months in the monsoon of 2000, following the thousands of pilgrims and thefour-horned goat which leads the procession, from the lower hills to the18, 000 foot high Roopkund Lake (where hundreds of skeletons lie in the still icy water, untraced but several hundred years old. One story has it that these are the remains of General Zorawar Singh's army, after they were hit by an avalanche) and the mountains around the outer ring of the Nanda Devi sanctuary. Shot under dangerous monsoon conditions, this is rare footage. Acquired on Digi Beta. Some 15 hours of Digi Beta and 2 hours of Mini DV footage.
