Hinchinbrook Island, located about 6km off the coast at Cardwell, a small town halfway between Townsville and Cairns in north Queensland, falls within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. Protected since 1932, it is one of Australia's largest island national parks.
Hinchinbrook's rugged 400sq.km landmass has been shaped by the seasonal rains and tidal swells of the Wet Tropics. An intricate network of creeks and waterways threads across the island; swollen with monsoon rainwater during the humid summer months, they give birth to falls that thunder through the island's rock country. During the winter months, the waterways gradually drain and evaporate, leaving many creeks dry. On Hinchinbrook's coastline, sweeping beaches, mangrove-fringed forests and rocky headlands meet the Coral Sea.
Twice a day, its tides fill and drain the island's inlets and tidal channels. Known for its varied ecosystems, Hinchinbrook is home to heath-covered mountains, melaleuca and palm wetlands, eucalypt and casuarina woodlands, and lush, tropical rainforests. Its mangrove forests, fringing reefs and seagrass beds are important habitats for fish and marine species, such as snubfin dolphins, dugongs and green turtles, as well as saltwater crocodiles.

Hinchinbrook Island HD
The island’s cloud-covered mountains support fragile heath vegetation. Rainforest and eucalypt forest descend to a mangrove-lined channel in the west with bays, beaches and rocky headlands along the east coast.
Hinchinbrook Island lies east of Cardwell and north of Lucinda, separated from the northern coast of Queensland, Australia by the narrow Hinchinbrook Channel. Hinchinbrook Island is part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and wholly protected within the Hinchinbrook Island National Park, except for a small and abandoned resort. It is the largest island on the Great Barrier Reef. It is also the largest island national park in Australia.

Townsville to Hinchinbrook | The ultimate barra fishing charter destination
Many people agree that Hinchinbrook Island near Townsville is the perfect destination for Barramundi fishing charters. Is it!
Well being one of the guides that do operate here I think that’s a pretty good assumption. I have been running barra fishing charters for nearly 3 decades with many of those years in the Townsville to Burdekin region and I moved up to Hinchinbrook in 2006.
The thing I love most about running barra fishing charters here is the flexibility you have as far as fishing styles and locations and there is always somewhere to go no matter how windy it gets.

Cardwell is a tropical coastal town in Far North Queensland, Australia. It was the first port settlement on the Queensland coast, north of Port Denison (Bowen). The Post Office was opened in July 1864, it is now the Cardwell Bush Telegraph Heritage Centre.
Seaward of Cardwell lies the Coral Sea, the Great Barrier Reef, Rockingham Bay and Hinchinbrook Channel. Hinchinbrook Island, Goold Island and the Brook Island Groups are visible from Cardwell foreshore.

Highway 1 Australia's greatest road trip: Ep 23 Cardwell and Hinchinbrook
SUBSCRIBE:
After enduring Australia's most powerful tropical cyclone for more than 90 years, Cardwell is a town on the mend. Category-5-rated Cyclone Yasi crossed the coast north of Cardwell in the early hours of 3 February 2011, unleashing devastating winds gusting at 285kph and a powerful 5.33m storm surge.
Buckling the Bruce Highway that passes between the town and its seafront, Yasi destroyed homes and businesses, and ripped apart nearby Hinchinbrook Marina, lifting 50ft yachts onto the lawns of waterfront villas.
Our own catamaran, anchored on Hinchinbrook Island's southern tip, miraculously survived the cyclone, its anchor unmoved by floodwaters that raised the level of the Herbert River 10m.
Cardwell always reminds us of our good fortune and more than a year on, we are thrilled to be visiting friends beneath recently renovated roofs.
Cardwell's main street is humming with travellers when we pass through. We spot them fishing and picnicking on the shores of Rockingham Bay, taking in views of nearby Hinchinbrook Island and taking a break at the halfway mark on the journey between Townsville and Cairns.

Follow Catherine Lawson and David Bristow as they travel round Australia's national highway on the greatest road trip in Australia. They start in Cairns and travel anti-clockwise, stopping in to see Australia's great tourist destinations.
