It was established as Hindustan Aircraft Limited in Bangalore on the 23 December 1940 by Seth Walchand Hirachand who became Chairman of the company. In 1943 the Bangalore factory was handed over to the United States Army Air Forces. After India gained independence in 1947, the management of the company was passed over to the Government of India. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited was formed on 1 October 1964. In 1957 company started manufacturing Bristol Siddeley Orpheus jet engines under licence at new factory located in Bangalore.
During the 1980s, HAL's operations saw a rapid increase which resulted in the development of new indigenous aircraft such as the HAL Tejas and HAL Dhruv. HAL also developed an advanced version of the MiG-21, known as MiG-21 Bison, which increased its life-span by more than 20 years. By 2012, HAL was reportedly bogged down in the details of production and has been slipping on its schedules.
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited or HAL is India’s first and only aviation museum which was established in 2001. It has a large collection of aircraft models, photographs, fighter planes, and helicopters. There are also aircraft simulators, a mock air traffic control tower.
It is situated at the intersection of HAL Old Airport Road & Basavanagar Road. It is about 17 Kms from the Bengaluru City Railway Station. The Heritage Centre & Aerospace Museum is sprawled over 4 acres of lush green land.

The second Hall highlights the various functions of an Aero Engine by displaying motorized cross sections of various models of Aero Engines. Real Engines such as Garret (for Dornier Aircraft), Adour (for Jaguar Aircraft) and Orpheus (for Kiran Aircraft) can be seen here along with Ejection Seat with Parachute; and Pushpak & Basant Aircraft.
Outdoor display of Aircraft such as MARUT, MIG-21, HT-2, KIRAN, CANBERRA, AJEET, LAKSHYA (Pilotless Target Aircraft) & many more, will excite aerospace lovers of all ages - kids, students and adults.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited Plan for 2025.
State-run aerospace behemoth Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has finalised a major plan to manufacture nearly 1,000 military helicopters and over a hundred planes, in tune with government's focus on speeding up defence indigenisation.
State-run aerospace behemoth Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has finalised a major plan to manufacture nearly 1,000 military helicopters and over a hundred planes, in tune with government’s focus on speeding up defence indigenisation. HAL Chairman and Managing Director T Suvarna Raju said the company has also ramped up its infrastructure to deliver 123 Tejas Light Combat Aircraft to the India Air Force with an annual delivery of 16 jets from 2018-19 onwards. In the next five years, the HAL will also carry out major upgrade of almost the entire fighter fleet of IAF including Su-30MKI, Jaguars and Mirage jets, making them more lethal, he said.
“Next five years will be really vibrant time for HAL. We are upgrading almost every major platform including Sukhois, Jaguars, Mirage and Hawks. “We are going to build around 1,000 helicopters including Kamov 226, LCH (Light Combat Helicopter) ALH (Advanced Light Helicopter) in the next 10 years,” Raju told PTI in an interview.
The HAL and Russian defence firms have finalised a Joint Venture agreement for production of light weight multi-role ‘Kamov 226T’ helicopters in India which will replace the aging fleet of Cheetah and Chetak choppers. The inter-government agreement for the deal was signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Russia in December, 2015.
On manufacture of Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, the HAL chief said its production will be doubled from current eight aircraft per year to 16 from 2018-19. Tejas, the smallest and lightest of its class, was inducted into the IAF in July last year.
The HAL has an order from IAF to supply 40 Tejas. The government has also approved the procurement of 83 Tejas Mk-1A taking the total number of the aircraft to be manufactured by HAL to 123. Raju said besides enhancing infrastructure for redouble manufacturing of Tejas, HAL has also outsourced manufacture of some major components including wings and fuselage of the jet to private industry which will further speed up rate of production.
Calling Sukhoi upgrade a major programme, he said the fleet will be equipped with missiles, avionics and sensors. Both India and Russia have been in negotiation for upgrade of the Su-30MKI to a near fifth-generation level.
Earlier this month, India and Russia signed two key agreements for long-term maintenance and technical support for the Su-30MKI fleet.
India is one of the largest importers of arms and military platforms globally. The government has been focusing significantly on promoting defence indigenisation by taking a slew of reform initiatives including liberalising FDI in defence sector.
Reflecting government’s focus in the area, Defence Minister Arun Jaitley earlier this month had said India was not happy with the label of world’s largest importer of weapons system and had asked the industry to take advantage of government’s policy to promote defence production.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Vs Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) Which Is The Best?
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL):
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is an Indian state-owned aerospace and defence company headquartered in Bangalore, India. It is governed under the management of the Indian Ministry of Defence.
The government-owned corporation is primarily involved in the operations of the aerospace and is currently involved in the design, fabrication and assembly of aircraft, jet engines, helicopters and their spare parts. It has several facilities spread across India including Nasik, Korwa, Kanpur, Koraput, Lucknow, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kasaragod. The HAL HF-24 Marut fighter-bomber was the first fighter aircraft made in India.
HAL was established as Hindustan Aircraft Limited in Bangalore on 23 December 1940 by Walchand Hirachand who became Chairman of the company. The companies office was opened at a bungalow called Eventide on Domlur Road.
The organisation and equipment for the factory at Bangalore was set up by William D. Pawley of the Intercontinental Aircraft Corporation of New York, who had already established Central Aircraft Manufacturing Company (CAMCO) in partnership with Chinese Nationalist government. Pawley obtained a large number of machine-tools and equipment from the United States.
The Indian Government bought a one-third stake in the company and by April 1941 by investing 25 lakhs as it believed this to be a strategic imperative. The decision by the government was primarily motivated to boost British military hardware supplies in Asia to counter the increasing threat posed by Imperial Japan during Second World War. The Kingdom of Mysore supplied two directors, Air Marshal John Higgins was resident director. The first aircraft built was a Harlow PC-5 On 2 April 1942, the government announced that the company had been nationalised when it had bought out the stakes of Seth Walchand Hirachand and other promoters so that it could act freely. The Mysore Kingdom refused to sell its stake in the company but yielded the management control over to the Indian Government.
Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC):
The Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) is a Pakistan-based major aerospace, defence contractor under managed and controlled as a military corporationthat produces aerial systems for both military and civilian usage, situated in Kamra, Attock District.
Founded in 1971 by the Pakistan Air Force (PAF), the PAC designs, develops, and build aircraft and avionics systems for the Inter–Services of the country; it also provides its services for civilian aircraft. In addition, the PAC performs local maintenance and works on the aircraft MLU systems of foreign-built military and civilian aircraft. It is solely owned by the Pakistan Air Force as its corporate interests and its corporate appointments are directly made by the Chief of air staff from the Air HQ of the Pakistan Air Force.
Mainly focusing on avionics, aviation, and high-tech electronics, the PAC also manufactures military systems for the Pakistan Army and Navy, which are listed as valued customers. Many of these products are specially suited for the Pakistan Armed Forces needs, while others are also marketed to foreign militaries. While it collaborated with several countries corporate organisations, the PAC often jointly works with the Turkish TAI and the Chinese CATIC. Its aircraft have been exported to Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Since 1947, the Pakistan Air Force operated largely dependent on foreign suppliers, fighter jets and aircraft had to be sent abroad for desired inspection, development, and to produce parts to maintain the fighter aircraft in service, causing the downsizing of the air force.
After consultation from the PAF's commanders at AHQ at the Pindi Cantt, the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) was established in 1973 in Kamra with Aircraft Rebuild Factory first being functional. PAC was established by the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) as part of the new defence policy introduced in 1972; the PAC represents wide range of corporate revenue of the air force while fulfilling the national security needs of the country. The Pakistan Aeronautical Complex started with three main Ministry of Defence projects designated P-721, P-741 and P-751. The first two digits show the year of project approval and launch, the third digit is a serial designator.
Since 1980s–90s, PAC functions include licensed-built Mirage-III, Mirage-5, and the F-16s as well as building the F100 engines for the F-16s under license from Pratt & Whitney.
