Fools & Dreamers: Regenerating a Native Forest is a 30-minute documentary about Hinewai Nature Reserve, on New Zealand’s Banks Peninsula, and its kaitiaki/manager of 30 years, botanist Hugh Wilson. When, in 1987, Hugh let the local community know of his plans to allow the introduced ‘weed’ gorse to grow as a nurse canopy to regenerate farmland into native forest, people were not only skeptical but outright angry – the plan was the sort to be expected only of “fools and dreamers”.
Now considered a hero locally and across the country, Hugh oversees 1500 hectares resplendent in native forest, where birds and other wildlife are abundant and 47 known waterfalls are in permanent flow. He has proven without doubt that nature knows best – and that he is no fool.

Akaroa Hiking Adventures
New Zealand is absolutely stunning! Especially, Akaroa. Such lush, green country filled with so much beauty I almost wanted to cry. The air is so fresh, skies so blue, and the sound of nature so pure. Enjoy watching this hike up Purple Peak trail to Stony Bay Peak. It was such a beautiful day!

Official Trailer: Fools & Dreamers: Regenerating a Native Forest
Watch the full film now!
Fools & Dreamers is a 30-minute documentary telling the story of Hinewai Nature Reserve, on Canterbury’s Banks Peninsula, and its kaitiaki/manager of 30 years, botanist Hugh Wilson. We learn about the commitment of Hugh and the Maurice White Native Forest Trust to regenerate marginal, hilly farmland into native forest, using a minimal interference method that allows nature to do the work, giving life to over 1500 hectares of native forest, waterways, and the creatures that live within them.
When, in 1987, Hugh let the local community know about his plans to allow gorse to grow as a nurse canopy for self-sown native trees, the response was sceptical at best and outright angry and disparaging for the most part – one farmer stating the plan was the sort to be expected only of “fools and dreamers”. Now considered a local hero by town and country folk alike, Hugh’s home at Hinewai overlooks a valley resplendent in native forest canopy, where birds and other wildlife are abundant and 47 known waterfalls are in permanent flow.
An inspiring, charismatic personality, Hugh’s passion and enthusiasm for his life’s project come through in every sentence he speaks. A dreamer who has made his dream come true, Hugh has proven without doubt that nature knows best – and that he is no fool.

Banks Peninsula Tramp, New Zealand
The Banks Peninsula Track is a 35 kilometre tramping track on the Banks Peninsula on the South Island of New Zealand in the Canterbury region.
Both the two day and four day track options start and end in Akaroa and reach a maximum altitude of 699 metres at Trig GG, traversing a rugged coastline, forests, bush, pastures, and the Hinewai Reserve.
On the 27th April, 2011 less than 48 hours after landing in New Zealand we headed out on the Tramp.
Our Kiwi relatives told us it was pretty easy going underfoot. It wasn't! It was one of the hardest things I've ever done...but also one of the most rewarding as you'll see from this footage.
We had an amazing time and I'd highly recommend the tramp to anyone looking to go walking in NZ. I just wish I'd filmed more of the huts we stayed in as they were awesome!

A bit of info about the Banks Peninsula from ChristchurchNZ:
A journey around this beautiful peninsula will reward you with picturesque vistas at every turn, a thriving artisan culture and a marine environment teaming with wildlife. Come and immerse yourself in the alluring French character of Akaroa township – a seaside retreat just 90 minutes from Christchurch.
Akaroa simply oozes charm! Nods to its history as a French settlement are everywhere, with pretty French-named streets, lined with historic cottages cloaked in roses. While away the hours browsing boutique shops and craft galleries, and stop for a pick-me-up of fine local food and wine at a café or restaurant overlooking the shimmering waters of Akaroa Harbour. Relaxation doesn’t get much better than this!

Day trip to Akaroa, New Zealand.
One of our many trips on our travels around New Zealand.
Alex and I took a day trip to Akaroa from Christchurch. Akaroa is surrounded by a ancient volcano that gives fantastic views.
We went on a 3 hour walk at the Hinewai Reserve, that was absolutely stunning.
This was filmed using the GoPro Hero 5.
