Hinokuni Matsuri, Kumamoto
Fantastic Places in Cool Japan :
Kumamoto Prefecture is blessed with groundwater, and the number of hot spring sources is one of the largest in Japan. Why is Kumamoto Prefecture rich in such water (hot springs) called “the country of fire”? Kumamoto Prefecture was in the territory of “Higo Country”, and the influential person was called “Hinokimi”. Therefore, there seems to be a theory that this area is now called “Hinokuni” (Fire Country).
“Hinokuni Matsuri” (Fire Festival) is a summer feature of Kumamoto.
In summer, summer festivals are held throughout the prefecture. The most famous summer festival is “Hinokuni Matsuri”, which is held in the city center.

Drunken Horse Festival 2019 Kumamoto Japan (FUJISAKI HACHIMANGU FESTIVAL)
The parade takes place in the covered Kamitori and Shimotori arcades downtown and basically involves each group chanting, banging taiko drums and chasing their horse down the thoroughfare. Though the horses are now very well controlled, in years past they actually gave local sake or shochu to the animals, causing quite a stir and – in my opinion – endangering the welfare of the animals. There’s more than enough excitement going on during the parade without the addition of alcohol.

Yamaga Lantern Dance Festival – Yamaga Toro Matsuri 山鹿吐露祭 in Japanese, is held on the evenings of August 15th and 16th in the city of Yamaga every year. The highlight is the One Thousand Lantern Dance when hundreds of women, dressed in simple white summer yukata and red obi sashes dance elegantly through the night wearing beautifully crafted paper illuminated lanterns on their heads.
The origins of the festival come from an ancient story which tells how the Yamaga villagers helped the legendary Emperor Keiko (71 to 130 AD)and his followers who were lost in the middle of the fog by holding lighted pine torches in their hands to lead the way.

Horse festival live in japan ( Matsuri )
When you think of horses in relation to Kumamoto, the first thing that springs to mind is Basashi – horse meat served raw like its fishy equivalent sashimi.
But horses are famous in Kumamoto for more than one reason, and the Kumamoto Horse Festival (known locally as the Great Festival of the Fujisaki Hachimangu Shrine) is a popular event with locals and tourists alike.
Hinokuni Festival
This project is intended to convey the excellence of Kumamoto such as nature, food, historic sites, tourist spots, traditional crafts, cultural lives, and so on, through the works of Takeshi Matsunaga, an oil painter from Kumamoto City.
We hope you enjoy watching this video of the motif of Takeshi's painting, and looking forward to seeing you in Kumamoto.
The videos about other motifs are also available to watch. Enjoy!

The Kureko Dance
Remnants of the Heike forces who settled here remembered their lost capital of Kyoto with the kureko dance, passed down for nearly a thousand years and now a government-designated 'Significant Intangible Folk Cultural Asset'. Participants wear a conical hat, with their faces hidden by the long black tail feathers of the 'kureko fowl', a rare type
of chicken originating in this area, and the dance tells of the sorrow of their ancestors
at being driven into exile. This elegant dance testifies to the dignity and strength
of people who, though fallen in the world, never lost their hope to survive.
