Up to the top of the tallest stone masonry lighthouses in Japan, Izumo Hinomisaki Lighthouse!
163 is the number of steps in the tallest stone masonry lighthouse in all of Japan.????
Built in 1903 at 43.65m (143.2ft), Izumo Hinomisaki Lighthouse in Izumo is the tallest of its kind in Japan. Sitting on the west point of the Izumo peninsula, the lighthouse looks over the quite rugged coast of the Japan Sea. At night the light from the lighthouse can be seen at the distance of 21 nautical miles.
Take a walk around the lighthouse and enjoy the ocean breeze, visit Hinomisaki Shrine, and have an unobstructed view of the sun setting into the Sea of Japan. Also, take a closer look at the walls of the cliff you will also see a peculiar geological structure called columnar jointing (thumbnail picture) which is common in igneous rock formations.

A trip to Hinomisaki Lighthouse
My three private-tutor students have grown up in Shimane ken, but never been to the lighthouse in Hinomisaki, just up the coast from Izumo. So we spent a cloudy day walking around, they climbed to the very top (which is about 200 stairs, not 600 like I say in the video), and then we ate delicious shaved ice at a local cafe run by a former student from when I was an ALT at Taisha JH in 2005. Fun day!

Izumo is a city at Shimane Prefecture on Japan’s Honshu Island. It's known for Izumo-taisha, a sprawling Shinto shrine. The Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo explores the site’s history, which dates back to the 8th century. Nearby, the Former Taisha Station is a 1920s rail terminal built in the Imperial Crown Style. On the coast, Hinomisaki Lighthouse overlooks the Sea of Japan. South, Tachikue Gorge is home to scores of Buddhist statues.
The Iwami Ginzan was an underground silver mine in the city of Ōda, It was the largest silver mine in Japanese history. It was active for almost four hundred years, from its discovery in 1526 to its closing in 1923.
The Gōnokawa River is a river that runs through Hiroshima and Shimane prefectures in Japan. It is the largest river in the Chūgoku region. It is also called the Gōgawa River and, in Hiroshima, the Enokawa River. The mainstream originates from Mount Asa located in Kitahiroshima, Hiroshima.

【日本遺産】日が沈む聖地出雲 ～神が創り出した地の夕日を巡る～
島根半島西端の海岸線は、出雲神話の舞台となった「稲佐の浜」と「日御碕（ひのみさき）」の名で親しまれ、そこから見る夕日は絶景です。
しかしこの海岸線に、夕日にちなんだお社である「天日隅宮（あめのひすみのみや）」（出雲大社）と「日沉宮（ひしずみのみや）」（日御碕神社）が祀られていることはあまり知られていません。古来、大和の北西にある出雲は、日が沈む聖地として認識されていました。
とりわけ、出雲の人々は夕日を神聖視して、畏敬の念を抱いていたと考えられます。
海に沈むこの地の美しい夕日は、日が沈む聖地出雲の祈りの歴史を語り継いでいます。
The spectacular sunsets viewed from the coastline of Western Shimane peninsula along the Japan Sea, from places like Inasa no Hama Beach and Cape Hinomisaki, are famously mentioned in Izumo Shinto mythology.
However, very few people are familiar with the ancient shrines along the coastline that honour the sunset such as Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine and Hinomisaki Shrine.
In ancient times, Izumo was considered the sacred place of the setting sun due to its location in the Northwest of the Yamato Kingdom (250-710), where the Japanese Imperial court ruled from present-day Nara Prefecture.
It is believed that the people of Izumo lived in awe and respect of the sunset.

As a first timer, I moved from sites sites, there I ended in the rural area of Izumo, which they called Oku-Izumo for the night.

At its peak, Iwami Ginzan was one of the top producing silver mines in the world. Its yearly output of 38 tons of silver made up approximately a third of the world's production.
Silver from the mine, known as Soma Silver, was of very high quality, and control of the mine was fiercely contested by local clans until it was acquired by the Tokugawa Shogunate in the early 1600s. Since then it was directly controlled by the Tokugawa government, and several castles, guard stations, and fences were erected to maintain control of the region.
Today the majority of the buildings in the mining area are in ruins but a few attractions remain. The main one is the Ryugenji Mabu Mine Shaft, a 273 meter long tunnel and the only shaft of over 600 that is open to the public. Also in the area are the Shimizudani Refinery Ruins and various temples and shrines.
Near the Ryugenji Mabu Mine Shaft are two trails that lead to castle ruins and nearby port towns. The trail leading to Yunotsu and Okidomari is approximately 12 kilometers long, and the trail to Tomogaura is approximately 7 kilometers.

Rumination - Leaving Japan with no regrets
It was a gorgeous day on Monday the 30th, so some fellow YouTubers came over from nearby Matsue and we walked around IzumoTaisha shrine and then went up the coast to Hinomisaki before heading over to Izumo to see Watchmen.
While Mike and Kim were climbing up the lighthouse, I decided to pull out the camera and reflect a little on my time spent here and how I will try to spend the next four months enjoying my time left in Japan and not dwell on any regrets I may have.

Matsue water & garden lantern festival which was the biggest festival in autumn of Matsue of 2016 began. Until from 1 to 31 on October. I divided it into two videos of the garden lantern display area in Matsue Castle and the area along Horikawa(Moat of the castle) .
