This because it's going to be the warmest Christmas Eve and Christmas Day experienced in decades. This year dozens of cities are likely to see their warmest Christmas Eve and Christmas Day on record. The records are a boost to the number of warm temperature records that have already been broken or tied in the U.S. this month.

STORYLINE:
It's not even Thanksgiving yet but 'tis' the season' in New York City where the Lord and Taylor department store has rolled out its annual holiday window display.
Every year thousands of tourists and New York locals flock to New York's shopping district to admire the beautiful Christmas decorations that adorn the shops along 5th Avenue.
Lord and Taylor Senior Vice-president Lavelle Olexa hopes the window decorations will help draw shoppers into the store despite the bad economy.
But despite the cheer of a new holiday season, merchants remain sceptical on how merry this Christmas will turn out to be.
Consumers, the backbone of the economy, are taking a beating from the worst economic crisis in seven decades and there is little prospect of that letting up soon.
Recent news has been dreadful, with the government reporting that there were a half-million new applications for unemployment benefits last week, news that came on top of a report last week that the jobless rate shot up to a 14-year high of 6.5 percent in October.
Most shoppers who came to marvel at the holiday window display admitted that this Christmas will have to be celebrated on a tighter budget.
The display has been a tradition at Lord and Taylor's flagship store on 5th Avenue for more then 80 years.

Heat Wave to Hit the East Coast on Christmas
An unusual, long-lasting weather pattern will lead to the warmest Christmas Eve on record for many locations east of the Mississippi River on Thursday, as the planet as a whole barrels toward the milestone of its warmest year on record. By the end of this week, it's likely that hundreds more warm temperature records will have fallen across the United States, adding to December's already impressive tally of about 6,000 warm temperature records. Christmas Day looks to be warmest across the Southeast, with records falling in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and other locations, while the Northeast cools off compared to Christmas Eve's balminess, but remains warmer-than-average.

Rike's Holiday Window Display Timelapse
Every year, more than 8,000 people visit the Rike's Holiday Window display in the Schuster Center's Wintergarden from the day after Thanksgiving until the beginning of the new year.
The animated elves and animals first appeared in NCR’s New York office windows in 1943, but many Daytonians remember them from their annual holiday pilgrimage to the Rike’s Department Store which sat on the corner of Second and Main Streets (where the Schuster Center now sits).
The setup, teardown, and visits have taken their toll and the Rike’s Holiday Window display cases desperately need to be replaced!
The goal is to raise $65,000 to replace the current boxes, purchase an additional one for recently donated elves, and refresh the holiday décor. WE NEED YOUR HELP TO CONTINUE THIS DAYTON HOLIDAY TRADITION!
