From Hopetoun, we nipped back through Ravensthorpe and started the drive up towards Hyden,. We stopped at a few points of interest along the way, to stretch our legs and grab some photos. We had a look at the LakeKing outdoor tractor museum. Geez, those farmers back in the day were clever with some of their creations. About another 30km north, we stopped and had a giggle at the ‘stuck truck’. We’d love to know the story behind this and how it came to be.
As we had left Hopetoun quite early, we stopped into the Holt Rock rest stop for some morning tea. After another hour of driving we reached Hyden. We headed straight to the Hippo’s Yawn, for a look before heading to the famous Wave Rock. We didn’t realize Wave Rock is not a national park - you beauty. But we quickly realized you have to pay $12 for a parking permit, which is fair enough. Its a very busy place and we saw the rangers hand out a few fines, so be sure to pay for your ticket people!
Wave Rock
Rusty loved walking around and exploring Wave Rock. After a good hour wandering around, we grabbed some happy snaps. One stand out one, the will definitely frame when we go home. We headed across the road to ‘Lake magic’, where we threw our swimmers on. Now why is it called Lake Magic you ask? This man-made lake has a very high salt ratio, which results in you effortless floating. You can’t sink here, at all. Its a weird feeling and one hard to describe. We both had never experienced anything like it. Definitely recommend jumping in, if your in the area, it will leave you amazed.
Lake Magic
We made some lunch before heading off, our next spot on the map, was a small detour down to Buckleys Breakaway. If you’ve ever been to Coober Pedy, its a mini version of the breakaways out there. An unsealed road to get to them, but well worth the effort we say. Such an incredible natural wonder and only a handful of places you can see these formations.
Happy with our Hyden sightseeing, we started the trek to Kulin. From what we had read, it seems to have a awesome RV friendly camp in town and we were keen to check it out (by all the positive comments on Wikicamps). When we got about 15km east of the township, we spotted our first tin can horse! Yep, we unknowingly were making our way into Kulin along the quirky ‘Tin Horse Highway’.

WAVE ROCK IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA - How to Get Lost in WA Ep. 13 - Wave Rock, Western Australia
Wave Rock in Western Australia is a stunning natural phenomenon located in the small town of Hyden - about 4 hour from Perth.
Wave Rock is exactly how it sounds - A massive wave that has been carved into the rock over thousands of years of wind and water erosion.
We spent 2 days hiking around Wave Rock, photographing and flying the drone. Drones are allowed to be flown with care around Wave Rock and the views are spectacular.
There are plenty of other things to do around Wave Rock including hiking out to Hippos Yawn and watching the sunset over magic lake.

This video show two people exploring Wave Rock in Western Australia. Wave Rock is a huge rock that has been carved out to look like a wave that you would see at the beach over thousands of years of wind and water erosion. In this video we film and explore the rock face, fly the drone over the rock to get some amazing drone footage of Wave Rock and the views around the area. We also walk around the rock and climb Hippos Yawn. Hippos Yawn is another rock that has also been carved out by wind and water erosion over thousands of years to look like a hippo yawning.
Finally, our last adventure in this video, we head to Magic Lake which is also located in Hyden, Western Australia, to watch the sunset. Kierran flies the drone over Magic Lake and I use my Canon 70D DSLR camera to take a timelapse of the clouds moving and the sunsetting over Magic Lake.

Hyden Settlement Part I
Hyden (including Wave Rock)
Wheatbelt town famous for the remarkable Wave Rock
Hyden is a small wheatbelt town which lies 336 km south east of Perth. It would be a rather unimportant and insignificant town were it not for the remarkable Wave Rock which lies to the west of the town.
Hyden is the most recent of all the towns on the Central Wheatbelt. Its location at the far east of the region ensured that it was removed from the major forces which populated the wheatbelt - Hunt's wells, the arrival of the railway and the movement of gold prospectors.
The town's name is a funny corruption of Hyde's Rock. Apparently there was a sandalwood cutter living near Hippo's Yawn whose name was Hyde. The rock was named Hyde's Rock but when the Lands Department printed it out it became Hyden Rock.
The first farming in the Hyden area didn't occur until 1922. The first wheat crop in the area wasn't grown until 1927 and the railway didn't arrive until 1932. In the intervening five years the wheat from the area had to be carted to Kondinin. The Hyden townsite was surveyed in 1932.

Walking through a carpet of wildflowers, under a bright blue sky, listening to the wind in the Sheoak trees, you will come across a magnificent, prehistoric rock formation. You will marvel at the size and shape, eroded by the weather over millions and millions of years. This is Wave Rock.

wave rock
A quick video of Wave Rock during our recent holidays there.
Wave Rock is a granite cliff 15 metres high and 110 metres long. Its rounded-like shape has been caused by weathering and water erosion which has undercut the base and left a rounded overhang. Water from the springs running down the rock during wetter months dissolve minerals adding to the colouring of the wave.
