Family Food Adventure - Hippos Crocs & The big 5
Video 3 of SOUTH AFRICA:
We hired a car in Cape Town and started our road trip which ends in Johannesburg. In this video, we show the last stretch of our South African journey which starts in East London, passing through Port Shepstone, St Lucia, Nelspruit, Kruger Safari and then, unfortunately, Johannesburg only because that's where we leave this beautiful country.
Here are some of the highlights of our adventure. The restaurants and accommodations that i have written about, are the ones we highly recommend, which I hope will help you plan your own trip through South Africa.
East London:
After driving 3.5 hours from Port Elizabeth to East London, it was time to have lunch and we were very lucky to find the perfect place on arrival.
Pinecreek farmstall restaurant:
Huge playground for the kids, ideal after a long drive. We had a great lunch and ended staying there for a few hours for the kid's enjoyment. They travel very well in the car so its a well-deserved break afterwards and we could sit in the restaurant comfortably, watching them and also the wild baboons happily jumping off the trees and occasionally pinching something to eat from guests who had left the table but also left some food. They have a fabulous Farmshop and friendly staff.
We then headed to our accommodation.
Accommodation:
We had a one night stop over in a fabulous guest house in East London, With an enormous garden with a river at the end, the video does it no justice. The accommodation was very clean and comfortable, a jacuzzi bath and a fully equipped kitchen so i could cook, which saves us money too. The owners of mackenzie’s accommodation, gave us the best advice for our next stretch of road, which a lot of people had warned us to be careful. We did not have any problems but we certainly did not drive at night. We were very thankful of the information where to stop for petrol and to sleep, as that took some worry away from us.

This was our favourite accommodation in South Africa. You may notice from this video as a large part of it is taken here. It felt like our home for a few days. Fabulous kitchen, so again i was able to cook. There were Springboks jumping around the garden. Buffalos in field beside.
St lucia Estuary is the home of hippopotamus and crocodiles. We took a boat trip out on the Estuary, organised by our accommodation. It was incredible to float past them, just enjoying their habitat together.

THE BIG 5
I do not need to say how amazing the Safari was i am sure…….this was a dream of mine since a young child. We saw the big 5 just mind blowing, had two days of safari tours, one early morning (3hrs) and one night (3hrs) which was enough for the kids. We stayed 5 days at Kruger Safari and could even enjoy watching the animals from the comfort of our hotel as it was right beside the park fence. We had a Zebra that would visit us, the same time every night to enjoy some grass around the swimming pool. It is terrible when you start to realise that you are finding it just normal that a Zebra is beside you.

The hippopotamusor hippo, is a large, mostly herbivorous mammal in sub-Saharan Africa, and one of only two extant species in the family Hippopotamidae (the other is the pygmy hippopotamus). The name comes from the ancient Greek for river horse (ἱπποπόταμος). After the elephant and rhinoceros, the hippopotamus is the third-largest type of land mammal.Despite their physical resemblance to pigs and other terrestrial even-toed ungulates, their closest living relatives are cetaceans (whales, porpoises, etc.) from which they diverged about 55 million years ago. Hippopotamuses are gregarious, living in groups of up to 30 animals. A group is called a pod, herd, dale, or bloat.
Hippos are recognizable by their barrel-shaped torsos, enormous mouths and teeth, nearly hairless bodies, stubby legs and great size, adults average 1,500 kg (3,300 lb) and 1,300 kg (2,900 lb) for males and females respectively. Despite its stocky shape and short legs it can easily outrun a human, being capable of reaching 30 km/h (19 mph) over short distances. The hippopotamus is one of the most aggressive and unpredictable creatures in the world and, as such, ranks among the most dangerous animals in Africa.
The hippopotamus is semiaquatic, inhabiting rivers, lakes and mangrove swamps, where territorial bulls preside over a stretch of river and groups of five to 30 females and young. During the day, they remain cool by staying in the water or mud; reproduction and childbirth both occur in water. They emerge at dusk to graze on grasses.
In May 2006, the hippopotamus was identified as a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List drawn up by the World Conservation Union (IUCN), with an estimated population of between 125,000 and 150,000 hippos, a decline of between 7% and 20% since the IUCN's 1996 study. Zambia (40,000) and Tanzania (20,000–30,000) possess the largest populations. The hippo population declined most dramatically in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The population in Virunga National Park had dropped to 800 or 900 from around 29,000 in the mid-1970s.

Mismanagement
Since we have no means to communicate with iSimangaliso Wetland Park Authority we can not complain about mismanagement issues or problems public encounters.
So we using this channel to complain that the whole world can see the public is not ignorant. We know what needs to be done...
StLuciaOrgZa is categorised under activism since public participation in the management plan of iSimangaliso Wetlands Park World Heritage Site is only open to a selective few like minded individuals and the rest is show and tell informative meetings with no public participation allowed.
