Hirado Castle
Hirado Castle is located 1 hour and 20 minutes away from Hario Village and 1 hour from main base Sasebo. There is a toll way as well as a non-toll way to get there. We took the non-toll way to get to Hirado. This castle is truely remarkable with a 360 degree view of the Hirado area on the top level of the castle. Admission to get in is only 510 yen and is definently worth it.

The sea was like a rippling blanket of brochure-blue. Squabbling seagulls flew overhead surprisingly in a perfect V shape. That was the view from Hirado castle, situated on the pinnacle making it easier to care for his people. Daimyos are long gone but left behind the heavenly legacy where every history loving soul must come...
Hirado is around one hour drive from Sasebo city in Nagasaki Prefecture. Any history lover must visit this site. It is a complete package for traveller which combines history with breathtaking view of calm and serene picturesque sea.
There is a small entry fee of Yen 510 (USD 5 approximately) to enter the magnificent castle. Name registered as one of the best castle in whole Japan, contains many artefacts from Edo period. Among the artefacts, the armour of 35th lord of Hirado Domain, Hiromu Matsura (1806-1841), who was also a brother of ‘Aikohime’ the maternal grandmother of Emperor Meiji is a must see along with many other important artefacts and the most formidable Katanas.
History of Hirado Castle
In 1599, Mastura Shigenobu who was granted Hirado County and the Iki Island to be his domain constructed a castle named Hinotake-jo. However, in 1613 he burned down the castle himself to show a gesture of loyalty to the Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, against whom he had fought in the decisive battle of Sekighara (October 21 ‘1600) which cemented the power of Tokugawas and also literally started the unrivalled period of Tokugawa rule which lasted for nearly two decades.
In 1704, the 4th Daimyo of Hirado domain, Matsura Takashi ordered a construction of a Castle which is the present day Hirado Castle. The key motive of the castle was coastal defence in the East China Sea region and as per the national seclusion policy also to prevent western traders and missionaries from entering Japan. This majestic castle took 14 years in building and was home to all the Daimyos.
