Hirakud Dam 25 Gates Opening Mahanadi River Sambalpur of Odisha | Longest dams in the world
#HirakudDam is built across the #MahanadiRiver, about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) from Sambalpur in the state of Odisha in India. Hirakud Reservoir, 55 km (34 mi) long. It is one of the first major multipurpose river valley projects started after India's independence.
Hirakud dam built across the Mahanadi River in tribal state Orissa. Hirakud Dam is one of the longest dams in the world about 26 km in length. There are two observation towers on the dam one is “Gandhi Minar” and another one is “Nehru Minar”.
Hirakud dam is being released through 25 gates. As a result, nearly 8 to 8.5 lakh cusecs of water is expected to reach Mundali.
Hirakud Dam is a composite structure of earth, concrete and stonework, about 15 km from north of Sambalpur. It has length of around 24 km including dykes and stands across the river Mahanadi.
Hirakud Dam is the biggest artificial lake in Asia, with a reservoir holding around 743 km² at complete capacity, and water’s edge is about 639 km. Hirakud Dam control floods in Mahanadi delta and irrigates 7,500,000 hectares of land and hydroelectricity is also generated. The Hirakud Dam regulates 83,400 km² (32,200 mi²) of Mahanadi's drain water.
Dam currently has 98 flood gates, 64 sliding gate and 34 crest gates to release flood water. However the CWC has suggested raising water discharge capacity of dam by 1.5 times facing to the Sambalpur. About 30 gates had to be opened releasing 8 lakh cusec of water.

Hirakud Dam is built across the Mahanadi River, about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) from Sambalpur in the state of Odisha in India. Behind the dam extends a lake, Hirakud Reservoir, 55 km (34 mi) long. It is one of the first major multipurpose river valley projects started after India's independence.
Before the devastating floods of 1936, Sir M. Visveswararya proposed a detailed investigation for storage reservoirs in the Mahanadi basin to tackle the problem of floods in the Mahanadi delta. In 1945, under the chairmanship of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the Member of Labour, it was decided to invest in the potential benefits of controlling the Mahanadi for multi-purpose use. The Central Waterways, Irrigation and Navigation Commission took up the work.[2] On 15 Mar 1946, Sir Hawthrone Lewis, the Governor of Odisha, laid the foundation stone of the Hirakud Dam. A project report was submitted to the government in June 1947. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru laid the first batch of concrete on 12 April 1948. The dam was completed in 1953 and was formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on 13 January 1957. The total cost of the project was ₹1,000.2 million (equivalent to ₹70 billion or US$1.1 billion in 2016) in 1957. Power generation along with agricultural irrigation started in 1956, achieving full potential in 1966.
