Japan Trip: Ikuo Hirayama's Art World at the Hirayama Ikuo Museum of Art, Onomici, Hiroshima 12 Moochan
Art lovers in the Onomichi area in Hiroshima are strongly recommended to visit the Hirayama Ikuo Museum of Art (平山郁夫美術館), located on Ikuchijima Island, one of the islands in the Seto Inland Sea accessible from Onomichi. Hirayama is one of Japan’s most famous Nihonga painters. He is well known for his dreamy paintings of the desert landscapes along the Silk Road in countries such Iraq, Iran and China.
Hirayama was born in Setoda on Ikuchijima Island in1930. He went on to study at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and graduated the Nihonga course in 1952. He later served as the President of this school in 1989 to 1995 as well as again in 2001 and 2005.
Hirayama received his first award from the Japan Fine Art Institute at their exhibit in 1953 for his work “Ieji” (Route Home). In addition to the awards, Hirayama has undertaken important projects such as the restoration of the art on the walls of the Golden Pavilion’s Horyuji Temple in 1967. He was also involved in the restoration paintings at the ancient tombs of Takamatsu-zuka in 1973.
Hirayama is known to have said: My favorite scenery is always mountains, the sea and a set of islands. I was greatly influenced by my home town. So it is no surprise that Ikuchijima Island is the home of the Hirayama Ikuo Museum of Art. In addition to his famous Silk Road paintings, visitors can see sketches Hirayama made as a child. There are Hirayama paintings of the introduction of Buddhism into Asia as well as art depicting the effects from the atomic bomb.
Within the museum, there are three exhibition halls, a tea lounge, and a souvenir shop. There is a display of Hirayama’s works as part of the museum's permanent collection as well as special exhibitions.

Japan Travel: Temple Walk, Hirayama Museum, Festivals, Cycling and More, Onomichi, Hiroshima 04 Moopon
An old fashioned town located along the Seto Inland Sea in the eastern part of Hiroshima Prefecture, Onomichi (尾道) has many interesting sites and places for locals and tourists to explore. In addition to the temples, museums, parks and gardens, Onomichi is the “Honshu” mainland point for the Shimanami Kaido Bridge. And is the major port for the small islands within the Seto Inland Sea.
Onomichi is the home to many temples. In the past, rich merchants donated money to build temples within the port town to ensure prosperity. Visitors may choose to explore Onomichi’s famous “Temple Walk” which leads visitors to 25 temples. However, as Onomichi is also famous for its steep slopes, proper footwear is recommended.
Onomichi is the home to many respected authors, such as Fumiko Hayashi, author of “Horoki” (“Vagabond’s Song” in English) which was adapted into the anime “Wandering Days.” Artists will enjoy looking the museums such as the Hirayama Museum, famous for Artist Hirayama’s Silk Road desert landscapes paintings of Iran, Iraq and China. Many movies have been filmed here, including Yasujiro Ozu’s globally famous film “Tokyo Monogatari.”
Cyclists love Onomichi and its access to the Shimanami Kaido Bridge, the bridge which connects Honshu to Shikoku. The Shimanami Kaido Bridge has exits and entrances for drivers and cyclists to visit the small islands lying in the Seto Inland Sea. Onomichi, being the Honshu home of the bridge, has cycle rental stores, repair stores, even bicycle storage for those who opt the island hopping via ship.
Yet, there is more to the city of Onomichi. From the old-fashioned family owned business in the covered shopping arcade near the train station, to the modern U2 cycling support facility, there is something for everyone here. Traditional Japan meets Modern Japan with family fun festivals such as the summer fireworks festival or autumn Betcha Matsuri (where local “demons” run around hitting children on the head to knock some sense into them). Beautiful cherry blossom parks in the spring, artwork and history, cycling and temple touring…all available in the small, port city of Onomichi.

[JAPAN] Tribute to Motoya Izumi - a Kyogen master
This video introduces u to Mr. Motoya Izumi, one of the famous Kyogen artists. Motoya's family is a long line of Kyogen masters and Motoya is the 20th generation of that. The family originally came from Gifu-prefecture in a central part of Japan.
Motohide Izumi, a father of Motoya, was the 19th-generation head of the Izumi family's school of Kyogen; Motohide passed away in 1995, leaving a young son, Motoya, to carry on the torch. Shortly before his death, a naming ceremony was held, in which Motoya formally succeeded his father as head of the school. However, this succession was not sanctioned by the Nōgaku sōke kai (Association of Heads of Schools of Noh/Nohgaku), most of the members of which expressed that Motoya was too young, and not expert enough, to hold such a title.
Motoya’s career as a Kyogen artist, however, started when he was only a year and half old. His father saw something very special in his son and began teaching Kyogen… much earlier time than average children. At age three, as his father expected, Motoya has learned his part quite well and started to perform on stage. By age nine, he was already performing a rather challenging role for even an adult. Motoya was a prodigy.
Japan is the most ancient culture existing in the world and that is still going strong. The tradition is taken very seriously and monitored by old folks/masters. Whether a prodigy or not, one is expected to grow old to become a head of anything, let along a Kyogen school, one of Japan’s ancient artworks.
Motoya and his mother insisted upon Motoya's possession of the title as a head, and this dispute continued until 2002 when the Nōgaku sōke kai and Nōgaku kyōkai (Noh Association) moved to have his entire family and school removed from those officially recognized by the Noh establishment. This unfortunate situation is continuing in 2017. Meanwhile, Motoya and his family continued to claim the title, and the Noh establishment continued to refuse to recognize or support his work.
Nevertheless, Motoya continues with his Kyogen works, teaching the next generation of children. Meanwhile, he had to earn his living by working as an actor in numbers of NHK TV historical dramas and by being a host to the 2002 Winter Olympics in Japan, etc. Best wishes to him and his family and don’t ever give up…!!
Enjoy the video and many thanks indeed for watching…; give a big thumbs up please. My videos are sort of related to each other, so enjoy others as well. Cheers to u all… ; D

Japan Trip: Yakushiji Temple lit up world heritage site spectacular, Nara42
Yakushiji was built by Emperor Tenmu in the late 7th century praying for the recovery of the emperor's wife who had been sick. Being one of Japan's oldest temples, the layout of Yakushiji is strictly symmetric, with the main hall and lecture hall standing on a central axis, flanked by two pagodas.
The main hall was reconstructed in the 1970s after being destroyed by fire, and houses a Yakushi trinity, a masterpiece of Japanese Buddhist art. The East Pagoda has survived the many fires and dates from 730, the temple's only extant structure. It appears to have six stories, but is actually three storied, like the West Pagoda.
The Genjo-sanzoin Garan is located slightly north of the main complex area., which is a recently built complex. It was constructed in 1981, and is dedicated to the 7th century Chinese monk Genjo-sanzo., who is famous for his extensive travels to India and Central Asia. Yakushiji is the head temple of the Hosso Sect of Japanese Buddhism. Genjo-sanzo's teachings had a profound influence upon the Hosso Sect.
The main building at Genjo-sanzoin Garan is a central octagonal hall, where there are some of Genjo-sanzo's remains enshrined. Behind the octagonal hall, there is a building that displays works of Hirayama Ikuo, one of Japan's most celebrated painters who passed away in 2009. Hirayama's works were greatly inspired by Genjo-sanzo's journeys, the scenes of which was often depicted in his works. The complex is closed about half the time.

[Antonio Grassi, Direktur Eksekutif Inhotim]:
