Snow the Hirosaki Park 2018
I spent the New Year in Hirosaki, but the amount of snow was amazing!
And walking was hard.
[ Maniac Japan Travel -Tohoku ]
Hirosaki Park is one of Japan's best cherry blossom spots. With its abundance of over 2500 trees, cherry blossom tunnels, petal filled moats, numerous pleasant picnic areas, rental rowing boats, many varieties of cherry trees and illuminations in the evenings, it feels like multiple great cherry blossom spots combined into a single one. A festival is held annually from April 23 to May 5, when the blossoms are usually in bloom.
Hirosaki Castle (弘前城, Hirosakijō) was built in 1611 by the Tsugaru Clan. A three-story castle tower, fortified moats, castle gates and some corner turrets (yagura) survive or were reconstructed. The castle is located in Hirosaki Park, a spacious public park of about 0.6 square kilometers.
The castle's original five-story keep burnt down in 1627 after being struck by lightning. Rebuilt in 1810, the present three-story keep is the only one in the Tohoku Region that was not rebuilt in the modern era, amongst only a handful in all of Japan.
Major renovation works on the castle's stone walls are carried out from 2013 for about ten years. In a unique procedure, the castle keep was moved by about 70 meters to enable renovation works on its foundation and the surrounding stone walls. The keep will remain there for several years until it is moved back. The keep's interior was reopened to the public in April 2016.
Fujita Memorial Garden
The Fujita Memorial Japanese Garden (藤田記念庭園, Fujita Kinen Teien) was built in 1919 in the style of a traditional Japanese landscape garden. The spacious garden is separated into two main parts, an upper section and a lower section. It is named after its first owner, a local business man named Fujita Kenichi.
A few buildings of interest stand around the garden, including a traditional Japanese house in the upper section and a tea ceremony house in the lower section, both designed to afford views onto the surrounding landscape. Near the garden's entrance gate stand a small archeology museum and a Western house with tearoom from the Taisho era (1912-1926).
Hirosaki Castle | 弘前城
Hirosaki Castle (弘前城) is set in huge grounds which include a Botanical Garden and Lotus Pond. Hirosaki Castle is a famous cherry blossom and red maple leaf viewing spot in Japan. The Hirosaki Castle Museum building dates from the early 19th century.

The Cradle of Japanese Aviation: Tokorozawa Aviation Memorial Park and Museum
Being the home of what used to be Japan's first airfield, Tokorozawa can be considered the cradle of Japanese aviation. While the airfield does not exist anymore, the place is now home to Tokorozawa Aviation Memorial Park and Tokorozawa Aviation Museum. In this video, I show you what both of those are like.
Located less than an hour from central Tokyo and easily accessible by train, the Tokorozawa Aviation Memorial Park and museum are a great place to visit on a day trip.
The park has a lot of green spaces, as well as playsets, basketball courts, and other facilities, and so it's a great place to visit not only for aircraft enthusiasts but also for families and so on.
Similarly, the museum is a place worth visiting if you like aircraft, but also if you are just looking to escape the bustle of Tokyo and learn something new. Some of the aircraft you will be able to see on your visit include a NAMC YS-11, a Curtiss C-46, and a North American T-6.
Inside the museum, there are not only the actual aircraft, but also many interactive exhibits teaching the basics of flight as well as the history of aviation, and so it's a place that children will enjoy a lot too.
While most of the descriptions and other things are only in Japanese, some of them are bilingual. Regardless of that, though, you will have a great time no matter if you speak Japanese or not.
You can find details about the days the museum's open here:

Neputa and Nebuta Museum 2019
I went to the Neputa Museum in Hirosaki and the Nebuta Museum in Aomori.
Neputa Mura.
[ Maniac Japan Travel -Tohoku ]
The Neputa Mura (ねぷた村) or Neputa Village is a museum about Hirosaki's famous festival, the Neputa Matsuri, and also introduces the city's other cultural specialties.
The Neputa Matsuri takes place annually from August 1 to 7 around the same time when Neputa and Nebuta festivals are held all over Aomori Prefecture. It features floats with large painted screens that depict beautiful women, mythological warriors and other themes, and are illuminated from within when paraded through the streets. Several such floats and screens are on display in the Neputa Mura.
Although the main focus of the Neputa Mura is on the Neputa Festival, quite a few of Hirosaki's other specialties are put on display, as well. There are areas devoted to the local shamisen instrument, to popular local handicrafts and to old-fashioned toys. There is also a Japanese garden and a teahouse from the 19th century.
Nebuta Warasse
The Nebuta Warasse (ねぶたの家 ワ・ラッセ, Nebuta no ie Wa Rasse) is an interesting museum dedicated to the city's famous Nebuta Matsuri which is held annually in early August. The museum is housed in a unique building covered in red metal slats and stands along Aomori's waterfront district just north of Aomori Station.
The Nebuta Warasse museum attempts to capture the spirit of the festival and gives visitors a taste of its lively atmosphere, history and traditions. Upon entering the second floor entrance to the exhibitions, visitors are presented with the sights of the festival along a red corridor lined with photos and images from the Nebuta Matsuri's 300 year history. Lanterns in the shape of red goldfish, another symbol of the festival, hang along the corridor where the recorded sounds of taiko drums, flutes, and voices play.
Continuing further into the darkened main hall of the museum are five actual floats that were built for past festivals. Visitors can walk around the floats, which are changed out every year, and admire the craftsmanship that went into their construction. Several hands on and cutaway displays show the underlying structure of the floats while other exhibits show how the designs have evolved over time.
On weekends and holidays, there are occasional performances by Haneto dancers who demonstrate the unique Nebuta Matsuri dance accompanied by live music played on taiko drums and flutes. Nebuta Warasse also has a restaurant and a well stocked museum shop selling all sorts of local souvenirs and food.

Hirosaki Neputa Matsuri - Aomori - 弘前ねぷたまつ - 4K Ultra HD
The Hirosaki Neputa Matsuri is a magnificent matsuri held each summer from August 1st to 7th. It's features some of the city’s most gorgeous floats featuring some unique Chinese and ancient Japanese drawings. Hirosaki Neputa is said to have originated from the Nemuri Nagashi, a traditional event set to banish sleep demons who make people drowsy during the summer when farm work is at its busiest. Alongside Goshogawara Tachineputa and Aomori Nebuta, Hirosaki Netpua is one of the best summer festival of Aomori.

【4K】Kumamoto Suizenji park and Kase river
Not a vlog, no intrusive faces or talking, pure Japan only.
I came to Kumamoto after Beppu, took about 6 hours by bus. Next morning I went to Suizenji park as I got a recommendation. But while park is nice it's nothing special. But after that park I found much better place - Kase river and its set of parks along. Very beautiful place with a lot of running water and some sort of banana jungle. In the end I got back to Suizenji station by tram.
3 cats spotted.

The Neputa Mura - Aomori - ねぷた村 - 4K Ultra HD
The Neputa Mura (Neputa Village) is Hirosaki’s only museum dedicated to the city’s Japanese floats known as Neputas. Indeed, each city or village in Aomori has its own style and design. Hirosaki neputas for example are floats designed in the shape of Japanese hand fans. Open all year long the Neputa Mura will give you a chance to not only see some of Hirtosaki’s best neputas, but also learn about how they are made and operated. While of course there are is no substitute to the real thing the amazing Hirosaki Neputa Festival and museum will give you at least the chance to get a glimpse of these unique floats.

Top 5 Most Beautiful Castles in Japan
5. Hirosaki Castle
A hilltop castle in northern Japan, Hirosaki Castle is known for its five original turreted gates, fortified moats and sprawling grounds. Completed in 1611, the original five-story donjon was destroyed by fire in 1627. A three-story watchtower was then re-structured to serve as the primary keep. The surrounding grounds, gates and moats draw even more attention than the keep, and offering visitors a relaxing, garden setting. Planted with more than 2,500 cherry trees, the grounds play host to one of Japan’s largest cherry blossom festivals each spring.
4. Hikone Castle
Hikone Castle offers visitors a real insight into how Japan’s castle complexes looked during their heyday. The original gardens, gates and guard houses have been as carefully preserved as the main keep. The Hikone complex contains structures and materials gathered from other castles in the country. After 20 years of construction, the hilltop castle was completed in 1622. The castle remained under control of the Ii daimyo feudal lords until 1868. The nearby Hikone Castle Museum displays Ii dynasty treasures, including armor and musical instruments.
3. Matsue Castle
The only castle remaining in the San’in Region on the southwest coast of Japan’s main island, Matsue Castle is unique it that it never saw military action, although it was constructed in a defensive, watchtower style. Built in 1611, the hilltop fortress was completed after the last great feudal war. Most of the castle complex was dismantled in 1875, and only the main keep and the ishigaki, or stone walls, are extant. During the 1950s, reconstruction of the fortress began. The castle’s nickname, “The Black Tower,” reflects the keep’s striking ebony color. Visitors can tour the keep and the grounds, and there are boat tours offered around the outer moat as well.
2. Matsumoto Castle
Located in a mountainous region to the northwest of Tokyo, Matsumoto Castle is set on a structure of stone surrounded by a large moat. Constructed in 1590, the multi-storied castle is trimmed in black, earning the fortress its nickname: Crow Castle. The castle’s main keep, or donjon, is the oldest in Japan and offers sweeping views of the Hijiri Kogen mountains. Although Matsumoto is a hirajiro, a flatland castle, it was built for fortification. There are openings to fire arrows or drop stones on invaders throughout the keep.
1. Himeji Castle
Considered the most impressive of extant feudal-era castles in Japan, Himeji Castle is located west of Kobe, the capital of the Hyogo Prefecture. The fortress is commonly called the White Heron Castle because the castle’s white-plastered towers resemble a snowy egret in flight. Built in 1601 on the site of an earlier castle, the hilltop castle consists of 83 structures centered on the Tenshu-gun, a complex of keeps and connecting buildings. The primary keep is a six-story structure that’s visible from nearly any location in Himeji City. The castle has been featured in several films, including the James Bond adventure film “You Only Live Twice” and “The Last Samurai,” starring Tom Cruise.
