Rideau Canal Ottawa Locks
#ottawalocks #rideaucanal #ottawa #rideaucanallocks #canada #travel #worldtravel #travelworld #vacation #worldtravel
The series of steep, step-like locks between the Château Laurier and Parliament Hill marks the north end of the 200km Rideau Canal, which flows all the way down to Kingston.
The Ottawa Locks, with its flight of eight locks is more than just an item of passing historic interest. These locks represent an amazing engineering achievement in the middle of the Canadian wilderness of the early 19th century and became the focus around which the city of Ottawa grew. The locks connect the channel of the Rideau Canal in Ottawa to the Ottawa River, almost 80 ft. (24.4 m) below.
The Rideau Canal uses a lock system that is still fully functioning. The gates that let boats in and out of the locks last approximately 12–15 years. When the canal was constructed, the gates were made at the lock sites by carpenters and blacksmiths, but presently they are made in Smiths Falls, Ontario, and sometimes take up to 2 months to build 1 set of gates. The gates used on the Rideau Canal are made of Douglas Fir and are mitre-shaped to ensure a tight seal due to water pressure. The average Rideau Canal lock lift uses 1.3 million litres

Huntsville Muskoka Ontario Town Dock Boat City August 01 2009
Summer big time and the boats show up with waiting lineup in the river. Jazz Festival in the background and it was great. I have never seen that many boats at the dock and I spent my early teen years hangin out there.
Rotary Dockfest kicks off in Downtown Huntsville once again
The 2019 run of Rotary Dockfest saw lots of sun and plenty of bathtubs racing.

Rideau Canal & Waterway Jones Falls Locks Ontario Canada. Fascinating!!
Jones Falls, where the boats go up or down the river. A special kind of water life called a lock.
How the lock works?
- boats in
- gate close
- water release in the lock chamber
- as the water rise, the boats in lock chamber rise as well
- If the water level in the lock chamber is the same level as canal above then, gate open
Same as going down, but instead of filling in water, they let out the water
Boats rise and fall almost 60 feet via a set of four canal locks, and a dam. It was built with large sandstone blocks that were quarried approximately 2.5 miles inland from the north end of the lake, near Elgin, Ontario.
Jones Falls is the oldest continuously operated canal in North America. Most of the locks are still operated by hand, using the same mechanisms that were used to operate the locks in 1832.
The Rideau Canal is a series of rivers, lakes and connecting locks and canals that form a continuous waterway from Kingston to Ottawa, in eastern Ontario, Canada.
Very fascinating with locks. It’s amazing to see the boats slowly rise in a lock when being filled with water. And it just as amazing as the boats go down as the water let out.
The park is beautifully maintained. There are picnic tables and several historic buildings to visit. Also, a short walk takes you to a curved stone dam that was the largest in the world when it was built.
It is always a pleasure to visit this historic park
