This is El Zócalo & Centro Histórico in Mexico City (CDMX downtown)
Say hi on Instagram:
Watch last video of me skating through San Juan Mercado:
- In today's video, I'm skating through El Zócalo in the center of CDMX. Centro Histórico is one of my favorite places in Mexico City. It has a nice vibe, a lot of markets and a lot of history.
When you walk around El Zocalo, Bellas Artes and Plaza de la Constitución you'll find shops that are over 100 years old in the historic part of Mexico City.
Mexico City Historic Center [ZOCALO TOUR] CDMX 2019
Today we explore the heart of the city, Mexico City's Historic Center. Built upon the ruins of Aztec temples, this Zocalo tour reveals what life has been like here in CDMX for hundreds of years.
The Zocalo's official name is Plaza de la Constitución and it was the main ceremonial center during the Aztec Empire. Many historical events have taken place here as well. In the center giant flag of Mexico flies its colors.
The Metropolitana de la Asunción de la Santísima Virgen María a Los Cielos is the largest Catedral in Latin America. Some stones from the Aztec Templo Mayor ruins were used in the construction.
In the Zocalo you will see concheros, or Aztec dancers, performing. They are not just there for the tourist but as a reminder of the old ways. They have fought to keep their Aztec culture with these rituals ever since the Spaniards tried to convert them.
The Templo Mayor ruins were the main temples of the Mexica people. Check out the few remaining symbolic decorations. Now let's walk down the super loud commercial Avenida Cinco de Mayo. But look up to see examples of 19th-century architecture
Finally, we reach the Palacio de Bellas Artes, which host cultural events and exhibitions. Check out the stunning tiled roof.

Historic center of Mexico City The Zócalo and Centro Histórico
Historic center of Mexico City The Zócalo and Centro Histórico
The Aztecs built what was to become the capital of their empire on a small island in the Lake of Texcoco, in the Valley of Mexico. Testimonies from the time of the arrival of the Spanish conquerors at Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec Empire, account for the existence of the great lake dotted with a multitude of canoes and the island city, full of oratories like towers and fortresses and all gleaming white. The conquering Spaniards destroyed the island city of Tenochtitlan and started to drain the lake that surrounded it.They built the capital of New Spain, Mexico City, the “city of palaces”, on the ruins of the prehispanic city, following a European model which was slightly changed by the intervention of indigenous artisans and workers, and influenced by the canals and rivers that had structured the Pre-Hispanic city. Independent Mexico maintained its capital on the same place and added its stylistic influences to the architectonic palimpsest that we are left with today. From the 14th to the 19th century, Tenochtitlan, and subsequently, Mexico City, exerted a decisive influence on the development of architecture, the monumental arts and the use of space first in the Aztec Empire and later in New Spain. The monumental complex of the Templo Mayor (Main Temple) bears exceptional witness to the cults of an extinct civilization, whereas the cathedral and the Palace of Fine Arts are examples of colonial and late 19th century architecture. The capital of New Spain, characterized by its chequerboard layout, the regular spacing of its plazas and streets, and the splendour of its religious architecture is a prime example of Spanish settlements in the New World. The monuments, groups of buildings or sites located at the heart of the contemporary urban agglomeration amply illustrate the origins and growth of this city that has dominated the region for many centuries.

Rising the Mexican Flag at the Zocalo, Centro Historico, Mexico city
We where walking around the zocalo in Mexico this morning and suddenly there were all this soldiers comming out of the Palalcio Real.
Centro or Centro Histórico Historic center of Mexico City
The historic center of Mexico City is also known as the Centro or Centro Histórico. This neighborhood is focused on the Zócalo or main plaza in Mexico City and extends in all directions for a number of blocks with its farthest extent being west to the Alameda Central [1] The Zocalo is the largest plaza in Latin America [2] and the second largest in the world after Moscow's Red Square.[3] It can hold up to nearly 100,000 people.
This section of the city has just over nine square km and occupies 668 blocks. It contains 9,000 buildings, 1,550 of which have been declared of historical importance. Most of these historic buildings were constructed between the 16th and 20th centuries. It is divided into two zones for preservation purposes. Zone A encompasses the pre-hispanic city and its expansion from the Viceroy period until Independence. Zone B covers the areas all other constructions to the end of the 19th century that are considered indispensable to the preservation of the area's architectural and cultural heritage.[5]
This is where the Spaniards began to build what is now modern Mexico City in the 16th century on the ruins of the conquered Tenochtitlan, capital of the Aztec Empire.[2] As the center of the ancient Aztec Empire and the seat of power for the Spanish colony of New Spain, the Centro Historico contains most of the city's historic sites from both eras as well as a large number of museums. This has made it a World Heritage Site.
