León, a city on the Bernesga River in northwest Spain, is the capital of the Province of León. It’s home to many churches and cathedrals noted for their architecture and art. Among them is the Gothic 13th-century Catedral de Léon, with its towers and flying buttresses. The Romanesque 10th-century Basílica de San Isidoro is known for its frescoes and royal tombs.
León was revived by its incorporation into the Kingdom of Asturias. 910 saw the beginning of one its most prominent historical periods, when it became the capital of the Kingdom of León, which took active part in the Reconquista against the Moors, and came to be one of the fundamental kingdoms of medieval Spain. In 1188, Leon hosted the first Parliament in European history under the reign of Alfonso IX, due to which it was named in 2010, by the professor John Keane, the King of Spain and the Junta of Castile and León, as the cradle of Parliamentarism, and the Decreta of León were included in the Memory of the World register by UNESCO in 2013. The city's prominence began to decline in the early Middle Ages, partly due to the loss of independence after the union of the Leonese kingdom with the Crown of Castile, consolidated in 1301.
Leon's historical and architectural heritage, as well as the numerous festivals hosted throughout the year (particularly noteworthy are the Easter processions) and its location on the Camino de Santiago, which is ranked as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, make it a destination of both domestic and international tourism. Some of the city's most prominent historical buildings are the Cathedral, the finest example of French-style classic Gothic architecture in Spain, the Basilica of San Isidoro, one of the most important Romanesque churches in Spain and resting place of Leon's medieval monarchs, the Monastery of San Marcos, a prime example of plateresque and Renaissance Spanish architecture, and the Casa Botines, a Modernist creation of the architect Antoni Gaudí. A noteworthy example of modern architecture is the city's Museum of Contemporary Art or MUSAC.
Alot to see in ( Leon - Spain ) such as :
Rayonnant gothic Cathedral, with its unique stained glass windows.
Basilica of San Isidoro, with its tombs of the Kings of León and fine Romanesque paintings.
Convent of San Marcos (currently a luxurious parador) with a plateresque façade.
Palacio de los Guzmanes, the site of the provincial diputación (parliament). It contains a patio in the plateresque style by Gil de Hontañón.
Casa de Botines, a neogothic styled building designed by Antoni Gaudí (one of the three Gaudí buildings outside Catalonia).
The Walls, built in the 1st century BC and enlarged in the 3rd-4th centuries AD.
Plaza Mayor.
Plaza del Grano.
Barrio Húmedo (the drinking and partying area).
Palacio del Conde Luna (14th century).
Palacio de los Marqueses de Prado, a 17th-century Baroque building, currently the Hospital Nuestra Señora de Regla.
Church of San Salvador de Palat del Rey, the most ancient in the city (10th century), however with few remains of the original Pre-Romanesque building. As the name (meaning church of the Holy Savior of the King's Palace) suggests, it once acted as royal chapel.
Church of Nuestra Señora del Merdado, from the 11th century.
Church of San Juan y San Pedro de Renueva, dating to 1944-1970, but including an 18th-century Baroque façade taken from the ruined monastery of San Pedro de Eslonza, located about 22 km (14 mi) outside the city.
MUSAC. It is a contemporary art museum which opened in 2005. Its design by the architectural studio Mansilla+Tuñón was awarded with the 2007 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture. One of the building's most distinctive features is its façade formed out of thousands of large multicolored stained-glass panels. Close to the museum is the León Auditorium, also projected by Mansilla+Tuñón, which has an equally striking presence of crisp white cubes perforated by irregularly set windows.
Museo de León, which contains a collection of prehistorical tools and art from the Roman, Medieval and Modern periods.
Museo Sierra-Pambley, a house from the Age of Enlightenment
University of León.

[4K] MERCADO MAYOR FRUIT MARKET LEON, SPAIN WALKING TOUR
INFO: Every Wednesday and Saturday of the year (unless a local or national holiday is moved to another day by coincidence on a holiday) a market is organized in the Plaza Mayor in Leon, Spain. The schedule varies from 9 in the morning to 3 in the afternoon approximately.
At present, the stalls have been uniformed, and we have gone from the awnings of plastics varied and a little crappy, to awnings of colors that give color and uniformity to the market.
In this market we can find mainly fruits, vegetables and in general all kinds of products of the earth: apples, pears, cherries, lettuce, leeks, carrots, etc. according to the time of year. But we can also find poultry, rabbits and other species (depending on the time of year we can also find turkeys and other less common species).

Travel Spain - Visiting Las Medulas in Leon
Take a tour of Las Médulas in Leon, Spain -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Large, jagged, red rocks jut up through the green carpeting of the hills in the province of Leon, Spain.
These formations, appearing like the shattered foundations of some monumental ruin of a building, mark the site of Las Medulas.
This amazing part of the world was once an important part of the Romans' gold mining operations.
The method that the Romans used to extract the gold was remarkable; they actually carved through the mountains with water.
By diverting water channels and using massive aqueducts, they forcibly eroded the stone, exposing veins of gold, and then harvested the gold from the water.
The wonder of Las Medulas comes from the rugged beauty of the land, combined with the awe of Roman ingenuity and power.

Leon Spain a cultural city guide Tourism Attractions in Leon
Leon Spain a cultural city guide Tourism Attractions in Leon
The Pulchra Leonina, the Sistine Chapel; of Spanish Romanesque architecture and the old Hospital de San Marcos are the key points of this former Roman encampment. Over the course of time, León became the capital of the kingdom in the Middle Ages, a historic enclave on the Pilgrim's Road to Santiago de Compostela and a city perfectly suited to its inhabitants. The incredible natural landscape of this province will take take us to the Picos de Europa National Park, the area of Las Médulas (a World Heritage Site) and the winter resort of San Isidro. A cultural and leisure offer which is only surpassed by the quality and variety of León's gastronomy. What was the Roman Legio VII Gemina Pia Felix preserves an interesting Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance legacy, the result of its splendour during the Middle Ages. The Plaza Mayor forms the centre of this city, crossed by the river Bernesga. Among this baroque collection of buildings stands the City Hall, popularly known as the Balcony of the City, since from its galleries the nobles observed the town's activities taking place. Around the “Húmedo” Next to the City Hall is the neighbourhood of San Martín, built around the square and the church of the same name. In this area, there are small palaces and large houses such as the Casa de las Carnicerías and the Palace of Count Luna. The institution which once supplied meat to the city is a 17th-century building which today houses an exhibition hall. The palace has a 14th-century Gothic façade with Arab influences and a large dressed tower. Also worth a visit is the church of San Salvador de Palat del Rey, dating from the 10th century and the oldest in the city. Dotted around these streets are bars and restaurants where we can sample the best of the region's gastronomy and which have made it worthy of the nickname El Húmedo. We can continue our route on to the Palace of los Guzmanes and the Casa de los Botines.
