Historic Arequipa, Peru in 4K Ultra HD
The city of Arequipa was founded by the Spanish in 1540. Right in the historic center of Arequipa is the Plaza de Armas, beautifully framed by 3 volcanoes, the 17th-century neoclassical Basilica Cathedral, and the Iglesia de la Compañia. The nearby Convent (Monasterio) de Santa Catalina was built in 1579. Its spectacular architecture integrates local and colonial styles from the 16th to 19th centuries.
The city was built initially with adobe and later with sillar (soft white volcanic rock, pink in some rare cases), which gives Arequipa the title the White City. The historic center of Arequipa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it represents an integration of European and native building techniques and characteristics, expressed in the admirable work of colonial masters and Criollo and Indian masons. This combination of influences is illustrated by the city's robust walls, archways and vaults, courtyards and open spaces, and the intricate Baroque decoration of its facades. (unesco.org).

Historical Centre of the City of Arequipa / Tourist Destination Peru
The historical centre of Arequipa, located in the Province of Arequipa at the foot of three snow-covered volcanoes, represents the integrated response of native hands and building techniques and characteristics with European designs, expressed in the admirable work of colonial masters and native masons. This combination of influences, and the response to an unstable ground due to earthquakes, is illustrated by robust walls, archways, porticos, vaults, courtyards and open spaces, and a strong indigenous influence in the intricate Baroque decoration of its facades.

Cities in Focus | Arequipa
In 2009, Arequipa, Peru closed its most important commercial corridor to car traffic. The pedestrianization project is part of the city's larger vision to modernize transit services, develop a bus rapid transit corridor, and build additional bicycling paths to improve mobility in the city's historic downtown.
Magical Peru #10: Arequipa
We first arrived in Lima and spent a couple of weeks studying Spanish in the capital (please watch the vlog Living in Lima) then we headed to the North of Peru and visited Trujillo, Chiclayo and some archaeological sites, such as tombs, piramids and ancient cities. Now we go South and our first stop is in Arequipa, la Ciudad Blanca (white city)!
Arequipa, founded on the 15th of August, 1540, is the capital and largest city of the province of Arequipa and the seat of the Constitutional Court. Also known as the White City, Arequipa has 845 touthands inhabitants. Arequipa is just below the edge of the Altiplano, at 2380 meters above sea level and surrounded by three impressive volcanoes. It's Peru's second most important city (after Lima), and the second most popular among tourists (after Cuzco). The city is part of the so called Southern Peru Tourist Corridor, together with Nazca, Puno and Cusco. In contrast to these other cities, Arequipa is an example of the Spanish and mestizo culture developed in Peru. There are no Inca artifacts or ruins in the city as the Arequipa was a suporter of Spanish colonization.
We travelled around Peru by bus with Cruz del Sur, probably the best bus company in Perú. They connect the major cities and small towns, and the buses are very good, with confortable seats, on board service and reliable bus drivers.
In Arequipa we stayed at the Crismar Hotel, right at the city centre. From Arequipa is easy to get to Chivay, Canion de Colca, Puno and Lake Titicaca.
On the next video we will travel from Arequipa to Chivay by bus, crossing the desert and finding llamas, vicuñas, locals selling coca leafs and even the volcano El Misti!
Brasileiro no Peru

Church of the Society of Jesus, Arequipa, Arequipa Region, Peru, South America
The Church of the Company is one of the numerous churches located in the Historic Center of Arequipa, located between the Portal of the Municipality and the Portal de Flores. Temple erected by the Company of Jesus in the Peruvian city of Arequipa, one of the most outstanding examples of so-called mestizo architecture. Inside the temple you can see carved wooden altarpieces covered with gold leaf. In the sacristy is the chapel of San Ignacio, with polychrome murals that show the tropical flora and fauna. The cloisters were built in the eighteenth century. The construction of the Church of the Company began in the year 1590, was under the direction of Brother Felipe and was completed in 1698. As in other buildings in Arequipa, the material for its construction comes from the quarries of the Misti volcano. The physical properties of this volcanic rock make it a stone that is very easy to work but difficult to carve in depth due to its porous texture. This led to the development of a type of surface decoration that, as in the case of the church of the Company, crosses the boundaries of the portal and partially covers the rest of the wall forming a large stone wall.
