Out of all the western states, Arizona's US Highways have some of the most varied history. US 60 was not routed into Arizona until 1932, when it ran through Arizona's capital of Phoenix on it's way to Los Angeles. This road existed well before that however.
The portion of US 60 we are driving today is also the modern freeway and expressway alignments of old US 70, 80, and 89, as well as a portion of the original alignment of US 180. US 80 and 89 served the Valley of the Sun, meeting in the center of modern Downtown Phoenix with US 89 coming in off Grand Ave and US 80 on Van Buren. From there, they continued east along Van Buren St, down Mill Ave in downtown Tempe to Apache Blvd through Tempe. From there, it continued into Mesa as Main St, then Apache Junction and Pinal County as Apache Trail. From there, it followed modern Old West Highway, where it meets the modern Superstition Freeway at it's current eastern terminus.
Historic US 80 and 89, destined for Georgia and Nogales, AZ, respectively, via Tucson departed south along modern AZ 79 in Florence Junction. US 180 picked up the remainder of the eastbound route through the mountains. Later in 1932, US 60 was extended from Amarillo, TX to Los Angeles, along US 180's route, however just from Globe to Florence Jct. By 1934, US 70 was extended was to Los Angeles as well, supplementing US 180 from Lordsburg, NM to Globe. Finally in 1936, US 180 was removed from the system entirely (modern US 180 almost completely unrelated to Historic US 180, minus a small portion through Silver City, NM).
Today, we will be taking the modern alignment of US 60 through the Tonto National Forest, including over the soon-to-be-replaced 1949 Pinto Creek Bridge (featured on the thumbnail and our Instagram). Most of this road has been left untouched since the 1950s, and some parts even date to the 1930s.
In the 1990's, a bypass of Historic Globe was completed. This takes traffic along an extension of Ash Ave, instead of continuing down Broad St through the Historic District (signs are shown in-video). It then when up Oak St to Hill St, where the historic alignment meets the current alignment.
Finally, in the eastern reaches of Globe, we meet US 70 and SR 77. US 60 heads north by northeast towards Show Low, 90 miles away, where SR 77 departs north and US 60 straightens out east to Springerville. US 70 heads east/southeast to Safford and reaches Lordsburg on the other side of the New Mexico border. US 60 traffic must turn left here. The reason for this odd configuration is US 70 was originally the through route... kinda. See, US 60 met US 180 at this intersection, and US 180 was still the de facto highway. Remember, the portion of US 180 that wasn't given to US 60 was given to US 70.

Historic Ash Peak Mine - Duncan AZ
I stumbled across the historic Ash Peak Mine while flying around some scenic mountains near the AZ/NM state line with my drone. Didn't notice the headframe or open cut until I downloaded the video. Then I had to go back for a closer look with the new Mavic 2 Pro. Amazing place, with a cool history. Don't get too close - lots of unstable holes to fall in!

Wonderland of Rocks | Chiricahua National Monument in Arizona
Known as the “Wonderland of Rocks,” Arizona's Chiricahua National Monument offers wonderful driving and hiking opportunities. If you enjoy our travel video, we would appreciate a thumbs-up, SUBSCRIBE, COMMENT, and/or SHARE. Thank you for watching and happy travels to you!

ABOUT:
Known as the “Wonderland of Rocks,” Chiricahua National Monument offers wonderful hiking opportunities and a wonderful 8 mile drive. One of my favorite all time hikes, it is not your typical sky island hike. Not by a long shot. This small section of the Chiricahuas is notable for its abundance of hoodoos. These natural wonders were formed by a volcano some 27 million years ago when eruptions melted together ash particles into layers of grey rock called rhyolite. Over the years, movement, cracking, weathering and erosion worked up cracks, which let the weaker material wash away and leave us the gifts of the Monument...the hoodoos. An added bonus is the Faraway Ranch located within the park. That’s just a small part of the adventure and beauty you’ll find here!

US Historical County Boundaries
30-second animation of the changes in U.S. historical county boundaries, 1629 - 2000. The source for the background layer is the U.S. National Park Service.
This animation was created using data from the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries, a project of the William M. Scholl Center for American History and Culture at the Newberry Library in Chicago. The Newberry Library is one of the nation's premier research libraries. Principal funding for the Atlas came from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The Atlas presents in maps and text complete data about the creation and all subsequent changes (dated to the day) in the size, shape, and location of every county in the fifty United States and the District of Columbia. The principal sources for these data are the most authoritative available: the session laws of the colonies, territories, and states that created and changed the counties.
For more information, go to the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries Web site at This Web site provides interactive maps for all states. The Atlas data is also available on the Web site for download in shapefile format (for use with GIS software) and KMZ format (for use with Google Earth). Impeachment trial of President Trump | Jan. 29, 2020 (FULL LIVE STREAM)
House impeachment managers and President Trump’s lawyers have concluded their opening arguments in the Senate. The impeachment trial moves into the question period for both sides on Jan. 29, when senators submit questions in writing to Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. The chief justice will read questions out loud, alternating between the majority and minority for up to eight hours.
Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives in December for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Impeachment does not mean that the president has been removed from office. In the next phase, the Senate must hold a trial to make that determination. A Senate impeachment trial has happened only two other times in American history and once in the modern era. At the center of the Democrats’ case is that Trump sought to withhold military assistance and an Oval Office meeting until Ukraine announced investigations into former vice president Joe Biden and his son.
