PANEL DISCUSSION (58:39)
AUDIENCE Q&A (1:10:24)
Civil Rights and Anti Black Violence in America and Oregon
Presented by Dr. Darrell Millner and Dr. Jason Morgan Ward. Recorded on April 13, 2018 at the Oregon Historical Society in Portland, Oregon.
Racial violence was particularly significant in the nationalization of civil rights, as evidenced by the creation of the NAACP in the wake of northern migration and the racial violence that ensued in the first decade of the twentieth century. That process of violence, migration, and organization connects places such as Mississippi and Oregon, and telling stories about this violence — whether it occurred in Mississippi or in Marshfield, Oregon — linked Black communities and fueled the rise of a national civil rights movement. Join us for a discussion between historians working in two corners of the country, as they explore the ways violence and storytelling have connected those places to the national movement for equality.

Watch live: House votes on articles of impeachment against President Trump
The House is poised to debate articles of impeachment against President Trump alleging he abused his power and obstructed Congress, setting the stage for an extraordinary rebuke from the chamber of Congress most responsive to the will of the American people. For live updates:
The House will convene at 9 a.m. to begin debate leading up to the final impeachment votes. After an hour of debate on the rule governing the proceedings, six hours of debate on the articles will be divided equally between Democrats and Republicans, who could introduce procedural obstacles that would stretch the proceedings into the evening.

Holcroft Court and the Dukelease Development in Cleveland Street
Dukelease have made a planning application 14/11837/FULL to Westminster City Council to build 10 Storeys, 105 flats, A3 retail and a petrol station at 85-87 Cleveland Street, London. They are also applying for only 10% of those flats to be affordable housing despite this being a Westminster City Council freehold who themselves state that all new developments must have a minimum of 30%.
Dukelease held a public consultation meeting along with their architects Assael on 15/09/2014, yet despite the huge backlash, they ignored all our suggestions to improve the development and submitted their application unaltered. The biggest issue being that they want to build a petrol station 8 meters from our living rooms in 10 storey tower that is over twice the height of our building.
We asked Assael for the height of their 10 storey tower and for them to correct their drawings, they ignored our requests and so it is only fair then that we make public of what they should have shown at the consultation meeting.
Furthermore, Dukelease, or more specifically their light experts GIA believe that the 8 meter road in question, Clipstone Mews, is 'a historic city center Mews' when it is in fact an access road to a car park built at the same time as Holcroft Court and their development site in the 1970's; an attempt to reduce right of light to Holcroft Court. If they wish to do that then then also have to apply Westminster's UDP policy for Mews and keep their development to 2 storeys.
This is explained in their DAYLIGHT & SUNLIGHT REPORT/8413-EH-14-1128-CW(FULL DS REPORT) (2) written by GIA, who also misquote BRE regulations on light assessment and state that only a few flats in Holcroft Court will be affected. In fact, if you correctly apply BRE light regulations to their own computer modeled data, the only conclusion you can come to is that over 80% of the flats will be affected and in some cases they lose 80% of their light. It's not surprising when you consider that this development is only 8 meters away from their living rooms...which is not mentioned anywhere in GIA's report.
All documents referred to are in the public domain and can be found as part of the planning application. Just search for '87 Cleveland street'

How to Visit Philadelphia with an RV: Liberty, Cheesesteaks, and Rocky - Traveling Robert
We find an unusual RV Park in the middle of Philadelphia. We see many of the obligatory historic sites including a bucket list visit to the Independence Hall. We join long time viewer Rob, from South Philly, and he shows us his home town from his own perspective, including eating some authentic Philly cheesesteak. We also follow in Rocky Balboa's footsteps, literally and climb the steps of the Art Museum. We finally get a panoramic view of the city from the Liberty One Observation Deck.

Voices and Visions Of St. Louis: Past, Present, Future Keynote Panel
3/30/16
From the Civil War to the recent troubles in Ferguson, St. Louis, Missouri is a city that has long been a site for conflict, division, and violence. It also has hosted an array of legal, political, social, and design experiments intended to transcend its contested present and past. With this forum, jointly mounted with the Sam Foxx School of Design at Washington University, we seek to stimulate a conversation about the city’s history and its present conditions, using methodologies and questions drawn from architecture, design, and planning as well as the arts, humanities and social sciences. The aim is to explore and debate issues of injustice, inequality, and racial exclusion in ways that have broader resonance for urban America and will open new terrains for constructive action. Topics include the history of modernist planning, the urban impacts of post-civil war politics and governance, the social and spatial correlates of racial exclusion, and the planning and design responses that have been proposed to counter these conditions.
Open to the public with a keynote on Wednesday evening and subsequent panels showcasing the perspectives of a wide array of actors and institutions who have made cities such as St. Louis what they are today; closing on Friday with an array of GSD-based exhibitions, projects, and presentations from GSD students and faculty.
Organized by Diane Davis, chair of the Department of Urban Planning and Design, Harvard GSD, with:

Every aspect of the venue was carefully planned to create a unique experience and a community among their customers. The items in the gift shop and bookstore are carefully curated, the food in the restaurant is made with fresh ingredients by a local chef, and the coffeehouse and tea shop are run by local partners, Buddy Brew Coffee and TeBella Tea Company.
