The abandoned buildings of Fort Snelling's Upper Post
Recorded with....
And this....
This is a short video tour of the old abandoned buildings of Fort Snelling's Upper Post in Minnesota. This military base was abandoned after the end of World War 2 (WWII) and has for the most part, sat vacant since then. Recent preservation activity at the upper post has stabilized most of the remaining buildings to prevent further water and weather damage. There is a good portion of the old upper post that is gated off from the public and is therefore not shown in this video, unfortunately. Hard to believe these buildings are located within a few yards of the 30R/12L runway at Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport. (MSP)
Military Records at the Minnesota Historical Society
Military service has been an important event in the lives of many Minnesotans since the state's earliest years. The Minnesota State Archives, part of the Minnesota Historical Society Collections, is a rich resource for documenting Minnesotans' service in the state's National Guard as well as overseas. The collection is particularly strong for the period from the Civil War through World War I, with less complete documentation through the Vietnam War.

Armistice Day Blizzard of 1940
On November 11th of each year, Americans celebrate Veteran's Day, acknowledging the services and sacrifices of the men and women of the American military. But in the minds of many Minnesotans the day evokes an additional memory: that of a powerful winter storm that exploded over Minnesota in 1940 and is remembered today as the Armistice Day Blizzard. Collections Assistant Tony Krosschell discusses this tragic event that took over 150 lives and its impact on the National Weather Service's forecasting practices.

Virginia History Day 2019
On Saturday, April 27, 2019, the Virginia Museum of History and Culture hosted Virginia History Day. This massive history competition was directed in conjunction with the National History Day contest and co-hosted at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. It brought hundreds of students from across Virginia in 6th-12th grades to compete in 9 categories (including junior and senior levels of individual and group divisions for papers, documentaries, exhibits, performances, and websites).
The theme of the 2019 competition, “Triumph & Tragedy in History,” challenged students to examine their topic's influence on history and draw conclusions about the ways in which it had an impact on the course of events and on individuals, communities, nations, and the world.
National History Day was founded in 1974 to inspire students to conduct original historical research. Since its creation, it has grown into an international competition with more than half a million participants and thousands of dollars in scholarship awards and prizes annually.

Minnesota Historical Society Gathers Ft. Snelling Name Input in Brooklyn Park
Should Historic Fort Snelling get a new name? That was the question before a group of citizens in Brooklyn Park Monday night. The Minnesota Historical Society says the site’s name doesn’t reflect the whole story. And they’re touring the state asking if Minnesotans agree.
If the name is changed, the fort itself would remain Fort Snelling. But the overall site would get a new moniker. Society officials say the site’s story covers much more than the fort. That includes the history of the area before the fort was built in 1820.
“Our job is to tell the best stories possible,” says Kevin Maijala of the Minnesota Historical Society. “The most accurate. The best documented. And in the best way possible that includes as many Minnesotans as we can. That’s our job. This name piece is really a reflection of that process.”
Interestingly, Fort Snelling is itself renamed. Its original name was Fort St. Anthony. The U.S. War Department renamed it Fort Snelling in honor of Colonel Josiah Snelling, the officer who supervised its construction.
Maijala says the consensus from the meetings they’ve held so far seems to be leaning toward renaming the site.
