Composer In The Loft -- Live Broadcast, April 27, 2015
The Third And Final Installment Of Composer In The Loft Includes A WORLD PREMIERE!
PianoForte Foundation proudly welcomes back Ethan Wickman to the third Composer In The Loft Series Concert. Previously hosting Chicago favorites such as Daniel Schlosberg, Nathalie Colas and The Avalon String Quartet, PianoForte Foundation is excited to feature the Lincoln Trio as they perform the world premiere of Elysium Remembered. Commissioned by the Foundation, Elysium Remembered marks the final chapter of the Composer In The Loft Series for this season.
Elysium Remembered is inspired by Wickman’s previous composition, Fractures of Elysium, written for violin, cello and piano. While Fractures of Elysium is based loosely on the Fibonacci Sequence, Elysium Remembered focuses on harmonies revolving around the cello’s open A string. Similar to how Fractures of Elysium alternates between rhythmic energy and calm lyricism, Elysium Remembered creates color through what Wickman refers to as “metric asymmetry, brisk tempi, vigorous, percussive gestures and gentle placidity.”
Concert Program:
Joseph Haydn: Piano Trio No 19 in G minor, Hob.XV:19
Ethan Wickman: Elysium Remembered for Cello and Piano
Stacy Garrop: Silver Dagger
Joaquin Turina: Piano Trio in F Major
Ethan Wickman studied composition as a Fulbright Fellow in Madrid Spain. He won the Jacob Druckman Prize (Aspen Music Festival,) the Harvey Phillips Award (International Tuba Euphonium Association,) First Place at the Utah Arts Festival Chamber Commission Competition, and was a finalist at the ASCAP Rudolf Nissim Orchestral Composition Competition. Wickman won grants, fellowships and commissions from the Barlow Endowment, Meet the Composer, the American Composers Forum, the Wisconsin Music Teachers Association, the Utah Arts Festival, Music In The Loft, the Aspen Music Festival, the Norfolk Contemporary Music Workshop/Yale Summer School of Music, the Wellesley Composers Conference, and the American Composers Orchestra/Earshot New Music Readings. Wickman is “composer of facility and imagination, the kind to whom both performers and audiences respond. (The New York Times)
This season, The Avalon String Quartet performed Namaste, which premiered in 2008. The second performance, by Chicago favorites pianist Daniel Schlosberg and soprano Nathalie Colas, featured Invention for St. Vincent in the Mezquita and Contraponientes, both which reflect Spanish history. PianoForte Foundation is excited to continue conclude this concert trilogy with the world premiere of Elysium Remembered.
Formed in 2003, the Lincoln Trio has performed extensively throughout the world as a group and in solo concerts. Violinist Desirée Ruhstrat has performed throughout the US and Europe, appearing at the White House and performing on live radio broadcast heard around the world with the Berlin Radio Orchestra; cellist David Cunliffe has performed with the BBC and Royal Scottish orchestras as well as touring as a member of the Balanescu Quartet; pianist Marta Aznavoorian has appeared with the Chicago Symphony and has performed at the Kennedy Center and the Sydney Opera House.
The trio has performed throughout the United States, including appearances at Carnegie's Weil Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Bryant Park Festival, Ravinia Festival, Poisson Rouge, the Indianapolis Symphony Beethoven Chamber Music Series, Lane Concert Series, University of Chicago, Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series, Music in the Loft, and in Springfield, Illinois, where the trio was chosen to celebrate the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial celebration with President Barack Obama.
Internationally the trio has performed in Germany, Singapore, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and South America.
The Lincoln Trio has premiered numerous compositions, including seven works by members of the Chicago Composers Consortium. Ravinia commissioned works for the Lincoln Bicentennial by James Crowley, Eric Sawyer and Lawrence Dillon and an award winning work dedicated to the trio by young ASCAP winner Conrad Tao. 2014 saw the premiere of a Chamber Music America Award commission with composer Laura Elise Schwendinger and a trio by renowned Chicago based composer Stacy Garrop. The Lincoln Trio has also performed for the Chinese Fine Arts Society and the Korean Sejong Cultural Society.
In 2008 the ensemble won Master Players International Competition in Venice, Italy and received the 2011 prestigious Young Performers Career Advancement Award.

1. Beirut is in Lebanon, not Syria.
2. At the time of the Roman Empire, Great Britain would have been known as Britannia rather than England. The name England was first used during the Middle Ages, referring to the tribe of Germanic Angles that settled the island after the fall of the Roman Empire.
3. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the only Marian apparition in the Americas to have been approved by the Holy See. Other Marian apparitions in the Americas have been approved by local ordinaries, including Our Lady of Good Success in Ecuador (1572), Our Lady of Good Help in Wisconsin (1859), Our Lady of Cuapa in Nicaragua (1980), in Venezuela (1984) and Our Lady of the Rosary of San Nicolas in Argentina (1980s).

Watch: Day 1 of Trump impeachment inquiry public hearings (FULL LIVE STREAM)
Watch live coverage and analysis from the Washington Post beginning at 9:30 a.m. ET as the first public hearings of the Trump impeachment inquiry begin in the House. William B. Taylor Jr., the acting ambassador to Ukraine, and George Kent, the deputy assistant secretary of state responsible for Ukraine will testify. Washington Post reporter Libby Casey will host, with guests Shane Harris and Amber Phillips.
Democrats believe that Taylor, the lead witness, will provide compelling evidence as they build a public case for impeaching Trump. In a transcript of his closed-door testimony released last week, Taylor details how Trump’s associates, including his attorney Rudolph W. Giuliani and the U.S. ambassador to the European Union, Gordon Sondland, tried to pressure Ukraine into investigations into former vice president and 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden, and his son Hunter.
House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam B. Schiff (D-Calif.), will lead this week’s public hearings, a decision many Republicans have denounced. Marie Yovanovitch, the former ambassador to Ukraine who was abruptly forced out, will testify on Friday. Read more: Subscribe to The Washington Post on YouTube:

Combining archival footage with quotes from Shalamov's prose and poetry, the documentary follows the life and works of the author of Kolyma Tales, the most powerful and merciless voice of the Gulag. In 1986, she authored the script for One Doll's Story (dir. Boris Ablymin), a film about the doll of Don Quixote made by an inmate in Auschwitz. In 1992-1993, she co-founded, with Artem Borovik, the popular TV show Top Secret, in which she explored, among other things, the Soviet recent past, including the human rights movement. In 1993, she left Russia and settled in the U.S.. For several years Sviridova worked for Steven Spielberg's Survivors of the SHOAH Visual History Foundation and personally recorded nearly 200 video interviews with Holocaust survivors. She lives in New York and is an award-winning prose writer.
