The Historic Port of Charlestown - Cornwall
Charlestown was originally the small fishing village of West Polmear, the port was constructed between 1791 and 1801 by Charles Rashleigh to export copper from local mines. Rashleigh was also responsible for the planning of the village that sprang up around the harbour. The village remains relatively unspoilt to this day and is full of attractive Georgian buildings and fisherman’s cottages.
Until the outbreak of the Great War, the port prospered, mostly from the export of china clay, Cornwall’s ‘white gold’. Unfortunately the design of the harbour meant that only small ships could enter it. Modern ships proved too big to use it and the last commercial shipment of china clay left the port in 2000.
Today it is home to a small fleet of tall ships and is a popular tourist destination and film location. Fans of BBC’s ‘Poldark’ will be familiar with the Port's starring role in the TV series.
Charlestown is situated approx. 2 miles from St Austell and is signposted from the A390.

Charlestown is a village, historic port and filming location of Truro Quay in Poldark.
Charlestown was originally called 'West Polmear' which was a small Pilchard fishing village and in 1790, only nine people were living in the hamlet. The harbour was built in 1791, before that people would leave to go to sea from the beach. The harbour was built to transport copper from the mines nearby (one of them can be seen on the hill in Charlestown) and in just three years between 1810 and 1813, 40,000 tons of Copper was exported from Charlestown from just one mine, Crinnis Hill Mine. By 1838, 814 men, women and children were employed at the harbour. By now, Charlestown had gone from a small hamlet to a busy village and a major port for the world. Charlestown is part of the parish of St Austell Bay.

Charlestown Cornwall. Poldark Filming Location.
Charlestown (Cornish: Porth Meur, meaning great cove) is a village and port on the south coast of Cornwall, England, United Kingdom, and in the civil parish of St Austell Bay. It is situated approximately 2 miles (3 km) south east of St Austell town centre.
The port at Charlestown developed in the late-18th century from the fishing village of West Polmear. Whereas other areas of St Austell have seen much development during the 20th century, Charlestown has remained relatively unchanged.
Charlestown harbour has been used as a filming location for both film and television dramas. On 25 September 2008 Tim Burton filmed part of his Alice in Wonderland film here. Filming took place on 1 February 2011 for much of The Curse of the Black Spot, an episode of the Doctor Who television series. It was filmed at night on the sailing ship Phoenix of Dell Quay while it was moored in the harbour.
In spring 2012, the harbour was a filming location for the fantasy adventure movie The Adventurer: The Curse of the Midas Box.

St Austell is a civil parish and major town in Cornwall, England, UK. It is situated on the south coast, approximately 10 miles south of Bodmin and 30 miles west of the border with Devon.
As in much of Cornwall and neighbouring counties, tourism is increasingly important to St Austell's economy. Tourists are drawn to the area by nearby beaches and attractions such as the Eden Project, sited in a former clay pit, and the Lost Gardens of Heligan. The China Clay Country Park, in a former china-clay pit two miles north of the town, tells the story of the men, women and children who lived, worked and played in the shadow of the clay tips around St Austell.
St Austell is home to several public houses, numerous high street retailers, and several independent shops, many of which cater for tourists. The town has a small museum which is situated in the Market House. A Brewery Museum and Visitor Centre is situated on the site of the St Austell Brewery in Trevarthian Road.
Notable Cornish architect Silvanus Trevail designed a number of St Austell's buildings and houses, including the Thin End and the Moorland Road terrace. Of other notable architects from St Austell include John Goode, who contributed considerably during the 1970s to residential developments in the area. Pevsner remarks in his guide to Cornwall that the following buildings are notable:
The Parish Church
The Old Town Hall, in Italian Renaissance style, 1844
Friends Meeting House, 1829, a plain granite structure
Masonic Hall, South Street, 1900[20] and is home to nine Masonic bodies
White Hart Hotel: once contained panoramic wallpaper of the Bay of Naples by Dufour (now in the Victoria and Albert Museum)[22]
Holy Well at Menacuddle.
Three buildings of the 1960s: Penrice School, 1960; Public Library, 1961; former Magistrates' Court, 1966.
St Austell railway station was opened by the Cornwall Railway on 4 May 1859 on the hillside above the town centre. Two branch lines west of the town were later opened to serve the china clay industry; the Newquay and Cornwall Junction Railway which is still partly open, and the short-lived Trenance Valley line. The town's bus station faces the entrance to the railway station to offer an easy interchange between buses and trains. National Express coach services call here, a dedicated link operates to the Eden Project, and local buses operate to villages such as Fowey and Mevagissey.
