Steam trains in Poland in the 1980's - rare footage
VERY rare footage showing steam power in Poland in the 1980's. Features Tkt 48, Pt 47 and Ty 2 engines at Kłodzko and other locations. The sight and power of these engines is something well worth seeing and the setting of Poland in winter is also a very strong image. Amazing stuff.

NWS&W 0-8-0 steam locomotive at Sterling, IL
This 8mm movie of a Northwestern Steel & Wire Company 0-8-0 steam locomotive was filmed at the steel mill in Sterling, IL in July of 1973. The 0-8-0 switcher, #30, seen here transfering ingot cars or buggies within the mill trackwork was one of several that continued to be used until early December of 1980 when they were replaced by diesel locomotives. These were the last steam locomotives in the United States to be operated continuously in an industrial setting.
NWS&W's 0-8-0s were aquired to be scrapped from the Grand Trunk Railroad about 1959. They were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1929. These retired engines were still in relatively good operating shape at the time. Consequently, instead of being cut up and melted down they replaced the mill's 0-6-0 steam locomotive switchers.
Northwestern Steel actually issued a steam locomotive photography permit for those interested in taking shots of their vintage steam engines. The front of the permit (I still have mine) reads as follows: This pass entitles the bearer, whose name appears below, to photograph steam locomotives from any one of the specific locations indicated herein, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 pm. only (a local map was on the permit which showed were you could stand and take pictures). The bearer in not allowed on Northwestern Steel and Wire Company property, and assumes full risk of accident. Absolutely no climbing or riding is permitted on trains. The pass also gives a bit of history of their steam power saying that they had about a total of 16 of the 080s in various stages of repair; some are regularly used while others are salvaged for parts.
A few of these 0-8-0 steam locomotives after retirement found homes in museums throughout the Midwest. At least five survive including one on display at the nearby Dillon home museum in Sterling, one at the railroad train station museum at Amboy, IL, one at the Illinois Railway museum, one at Bandana Square (restored in its original GTW colors) at St Paul, MN and #30 seen running in this video now resides at the Buchanan County Visitors' Center at Independence, Iowa.
Please excuse the quality of this video as it was transfered by me from film to video 20 years ago using a movie screen for this purpose.
