st mary's cemetery
This is a historic Catholic cemetery located slightly south of Old Town Alexandria. It is still currently an 'active' cemetery and very well maintained.
This was established in 1795 when Old Town passed an ordnance that cemeteries were no longer allowed to be established within the Alexandria city limits due to the limited acreage that the small town sat on - a full 76 acres originally.
St. Mary's is the oldest public Catholic Cemetery in the state of Virginia with many of its resting residence being of both Irish and Italian decent and occasional German.
The cemetery itself is pretty vast. There are not as many statuesque stones as there is at the St. Mary's Cemetery in DC, however, this is still a scenic cemetery and very peaceful despite being next to the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.

St. Mary’s Lady Lancers cap off near-perfect run with 2014 state title!!!

(Lancaster, NY)
There were plenty of teams in the state prep volleyball scene that were at least hoping when nationally-recognized talent Leah Meyer injured her ankle in the last game of the 2014 regular season, their team would stand a chance in the state finals on Sunday, Nov. 9.
Thanks to St. Mary’s senior hitter Ashley Drzymala—and the rest of her Lady Lancers—all those hopes amounted to a hill of beans when that Catholic High School AA Championship state tourney unfolded in Lancaster on Sunday.
That’s because when it was all said and done, St. Mary’s not only ended the season with the state title, but also a perfect 47-0-1 record, including four tournament wins and an equally perfect 19-0 record in Monsignor Martin Athletic Association league play.
The final victory of 2014 came in the form of a 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-23) whitewashing of St. Anthony’s (Melville) Lady Friars, after the Lady Lancers went 3-0 in pool play and also beat Hartsdale’s Maria Regina 25-8, 25-10 in the semifinals.
The strange part, though, was that St. Mary’s’ 3-1 MMAA finals victory over Nardin on Nov. 5 proved more challenging of a night than the five-match cruise they took to hoist the state title plaque in their home gym on Sunday—which says a lot for the quality of volleyball in the western part of the state, if you ask Lady Lancer skipper Don Pieczynski.
And that’s exactly what St. Mary’s did on Sunday, when Drzymala finished the title game with 24 kills, a .302 hitting percentage and 19 of those digs. She also tallied 76 total kills on the night, plus a .435 hitting percentage and 41 digs.
“I don’t even know what to say,” Drzymala said. “This has been our dream since we came in here as freshmen.
“I played the whole game for (Meyer), and I told her so,” the senior outside hitter added, then recalled the day her best friend—a Duke University commit—mangled her ankle by running into a referee stand.
“I think I knew that the weight of the world kinda fell on my shoulders, and I felt a lot of pressure,” Drzymala explained, “but I knew if I saw her on the sidelines cheering me on, I would definitely get through it. When she went down that game, I couldn’t look at her once or else I would start crying, but she pushed me through it. She’s my best friend, and she always will.”
Helping St. Anthony’s get its points in the championship game was also Fitzpatrick, who had 32 assists. Teammate and junior Danielle Vaiano also secured 15 digs.
For St. Mary’s, Bailey Dolegowski served up 36 assists and 14 digs in the title match for a total of 123 assists and 38 digs on the night. Freshman Summer Slade also had 20 kills on the perfect evening, while Caitlyn Meyer—Leah’s sophomore sister—added 23 kills and junior Jessica Kranz provided 31 digs.
It was also a team that only had one minor blemish in 2014—a two-set match tie with Pennsylvania’s Nazareth during a regular season tournament.
“I think in the big scheme of things, it doesn’t matter,” Drzymala said of the Nazareth blip. “We learned from that lesson. I think that’s what really pushed us through the rest of the season not to drop another one.”
And “it’s not frustrating because nobody’s perfect,” Pieczynski added. “There’s only one person in the world that’s perfect, and He’s up in heaven. We’re not.”
St. Mary’s, however, was as close as it gets in 2014—earning the Lady Lancers their best season record-wise in school history—and perhaps state history.
“And I told (the seniors), ‘Hold close to these memories, but don’t let the memories be bigger than your dreams, because there’s a lot more that you can accomplish on the volleyball court. Reach for the stars. Dream big.’”
For now, though, Pieczynski and his No. 28-nationally-ranked Lady Lancers, according to prepvolleyball.com, don’t want to do a darned thing but enjoy the moment.

FEAST OF THE IMMACULATE HEART - August 22, 1960
The Madonna speaks to Blessed Sister Aiello: “The hour of the justice of God is close, and will be terrible!”
“Tremendous scourges are impending over the world, and various nations are struck by epidemics, famines, great earthquakes, terrific hurricanes, with overflowing rivers and seas, which bring ruin and death.”
“If the people do not recognize in these scourges (of nature) the warnings of Divine Mercy, and do not return to God with truly Christian living, ANOTHER TERRIBLE WAR WILL COME FROM THE EAST TO THE WEST. RUSSIA WITH HER SECRET ARMIES WILL BATTLE AMERICA; WILL OVERRUN EUROPE.

Church that attracted global attention for image of Jesus to mark 150th year SHAMOKIN PA 17872 — From a storm knocking it to the ground to international headlines for an image of Jesus in a cloth, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church has had 150 years of history and miracles. With that, church members are celebrating their past while looking toward their future.
The church began making international headlines in 1977 when Iris (Reigle) Chowka, then 9, informed her grandmother after the April 13 Wednesday evening prayer that she had seen the face of God in the tabernacle cloth.
It was reported that as of Aug. 3, 1985, 30,486 visitors from 47 states and 37 countries had waited in line to see the cloth on the church altar, signing their names in five registration books. The books weren’t used until July 1977, so the number of visitors was much higher. Sarah Weedon, today’s clergy in charge, said she had always liked what the bishop had said about his visit. “The bishop came without telling anybody he was coming, and waited in line to come in, and so they were asking the bishop, ‘What did you see?’ And he said, ‘I felt a very strong presence of God in that community.’ I thought that was a nice, diplomatic way of not saying whether he saw the image or not.” Stormy start
The past of the church, however, is rich with history. The first cornerstone was laid down in 1865. In 1866, tragedy struck when a thunderstorm rolled through town, tearing the nearly built building from its foundations, destroying it.
Hazzard said Bishop Vail, newly elected bishop of Kansas, was on his way to Philadelphia and intended on stopping in Shamokin to consecrate the church and perform confirmations. Determined to have a church for the visiting bishop, the congregation, along with the support of the city, had a new building standing within 10 days.
Hazzard said in 1890, the congregation had outgrown the church, so the building was moved to the back of the lot and and a stone building constructed. “Then in the 1920s, that was too badly deteriorated, so they built this brick structure.”
In July 1980, another big event occurred in Holy Trinity’s history. In the current lot next to the church stood Ziegler’s Furniture and Appliances store, which went up in flames.
Weedon said, “They realized the store was a gone, so they were just focused in on trying to save the church.”
The church made it through the fire untouched, except for damage to a stained-glass window featuring roses. Bashore said, “I believe that God has really blessed this congregation. I felt it back then, and I feel it now.” Presence in the people
Weedon said she wants people to know the church is still there and they are open and still serving the community. She said she thinks the feeling people had when speaking of feeling a presence there don’t have to be seen in a veil, but can be seen in the people that attend the church every Sunday.
She said, “We hope that people take this opportunity to come and take a look at our beautiful church and expose themselves to the Episcopalian liturgy, which is beautiful, and hopefully find some nurturing there.”
“Our past is rich, but we’re hoping to have such as rich a future in the community,” Weedon said.
