Congratulations are in order for Milledgeville, GA on receiving a prestigious 2014 Great American Main Street Award. This nationwide award recognizes Milledgeville as one of the finest downtown areas in America.
On Sunday, May 18 Milledgeville Main Street was named a recipient of the most prominent award given by the National Main Street Center, a subsidiary of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, as a Great American Main Street. Communities that demonstrate exemplary achievement in the process of strengthening their downtowns and commercial districts receive this distinguished award. Milledgeville will join only two other communities in Georgia which serve as models for comprehensive, preservation- based Comerica district revitalization.

Milledgeville's Haunted Trolley, sponsored by the Convention & Visitors Bureau, haunts the residents of Milledgeville the week of Halloween with two tours each evening. The latter tour will feature stories and characters that might not be suitable for the faint of heart! The ghosts of times past will once again come to life as visitors come aboard the trolley! Milledgeville, Georgia

Milledgeville is a city in and the county seat of Baldwin County in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is northeast of Macon along U.S. Highway 441 and is bordered on the east by the Oconee River. The rapid current of the river here made this an attractive location to build a city. It was the capital of Georgia from 1804 to 1868, notably during the American Civil War. Milledgeville was preceded as the capital city by Louisville and was succeeded by Atlanta, the current capital.
The population of the town of Milledgeville was 18,382 at the 2010 census.

Mayor Dave Kleis gives St. Cloud trolley tours

Mayor Kleis is giving out the first tours to residents after St. Cloud receives a trolley. Kleis hopes there will be more tours, and trolleys, as tourism picks up in the community.

Old Urban Trolley co. was established in 2002 and has provided Trolley rental service for all kinds of special events, such as weddings, holiday trolley tours, and corporate functions. We have two trackless Trolleys that hold up to 31 passengers each. They have oak and brass interiors with state of the art CD surround sound systems. Each Trolley is equipped with heat and air, and has politician platforms on the back, which are great for photo opportunities.

Exploring Central State Hospital

Georgia's state mental asylum located in Milledgeville, Georgia, now known as the Central State Hospital (CSH), has been the state's largest facility for treatment of mental illness and developmental disabilities. In continuous operation since accepting its first patient in December 1842, the hospital was founded as the Georgia State Lunatic, Idiot, and Epileptic Asylum, and was also known as the Georgia State Sanitarium and Milledgeville State Hospital during its long history. By the 1960s the facility had grown into the largest mental hospital in the world (contending with Pilgrim Psychiatric Center in New York). Its landmark Powell Building and the vast, abandoned 1929 Jones Building stand among some 200 buildings on two thousand acres that once housed nearly 12,000 patients.
