MONSANTO, HISTORIC VILLAGE OF PORTUGAL/ MONSANTO, ALDEIA HISTÓRICA DE PORTUGAL
This film shows the amazing village of Monsanto. Monsanto (or Monsanto of Beira) is a parish in the municipality of Idanha-a-Nova. Historic village of Portugal, Monsanto is built in granite stone, being spotted on the side of a large steep rise, referred to as the Cabeço de Monsanto (Mons Sanctus). It is located northeast of Idanha-a-Nova and at the highest point its peak reaches 758 meters. The human presence on this site dates from the Palaeolithic, having been inhabited by the Romans, Visigoths and Arabs. The Moors would be defeated by D. Afonso Henriques and, in 1165, Monsanto was donated to the Knights Templar who, under guidelines from Gualdim Pais, built the Monsanto Castle.

Monsanto, Portugal - The troll village
Monsanto, or as an Instagrammer's daughter curiously named the troll village (@bmtq), was bestowed back in 1938 the title of the most “Portuguese town in Portugal.” The village stands on a mountain top with what we can only imagine are superb views of the surroundings, because when we visited the fog didn't really let us see anything. Tiny streets, mossy boulders that are sometimes even part of the the houses structures, caves, castle and surprising views, are just some of the things you can expect from a visit. I'm not sure as to why this town is considered the most Portuguese town in Portugal because really, being from Portugal this town is quite unique both in the surroundings and in the architecture.

Monsanto is a beautiful village built in the Portuguese countryside.Featuring narrow streets carved from rock and granite houses squeezed between giant boulders, it looks like a real life Bedrock.
At the top of the 400 feet high hill stands a very old square built fortress / castle. The castle played an important role in Medieval times when the Templars Grand Master built a castle which withstood several battles including the Napoleonic invasions. Monsanto, Portugal
Monsanto is one of the twelve classified as historic villages of Portugal, is considered the most Portuguese village of Portugal is situated in the District of Castelo Branco, about 25 kilometres from Idanha-a-Nova.
It was conquered from the Moors by D. Afonso Henriques, in 1165 but its origins date back to the Paleolithic.
Monsanto is built on granitic stone and is the result of a harmonious fusion of nature and its landforms with the action of man throughout the ages. This connection gave rise to curious uses of caves and rocks fully converted into construction parts. The granite rocks, huge, are so linked to housing, that antolhes floor serve as walls or ceilings.
