My short visit to the small historic town of Wallace in the panhandle of Idaho.

One of the prettiest little towns in the Northwest.
(Wikipedia)
Wallace is a historic city in the Panhandle region of the U.S. state of Idaho and the county seat of Shoshone County[4] in the Silver Valley mining district. Wallace sits alongside the South Fork Coeur d'Alene River (and Interstate 90) and the town's population was 784 at the 2010 census.
Wallace is the principal town of the Coeur d'Alene silver-mining district, which produced more silver than any other mining district in the United States. Burke-Canyon Road runs through historic mining communities – many of them now deserted – north and eastward toward the Montana state line. East of Wallace, the Route of the Hiawatha (rails-to-trails) and the Lookout Pass ski area are popular with locals and tourists.
The elevation is 2,728 feet (831 m) above sea level.

Wallace, Idaho
Wallace is located in the heart of Idaho's silver mining region, and the area has produced more silver than any other mining district in the United States. The area saw a lot of contention between miners and the mine owners - the Army had to come in a couple times to settle things down.
I-90 was built through Wallace on a raised viaduct. The original proposal called for a surface level highway, but that would have destroyed much of the city. Local leaders were able to get downtown Wallace designated as the Wallace Historic District, which spared the historic heart of the city. Minig is still done in the area, but Wallace now draws tourists for the city itself and for access to nearby mountains, trails and lakes.
The Photos (in order)
S05A0124 - The Northern Pacific Railroad Depot now serves as a railroad museum
W12A0079 - Historic downtown Wallace
W12A0056 - This sculpture of a Silver Valley mining family is located on the grounds of the Wallace Visitor Center along with a lot of mining equipment
W12A0071 - Visitors can pose for pictures inside this small spaceship, located in front of the Red Light Garage; I like the retro Stardust Motel sign, too
W12A0075 - The Oasis Bordello Museum highlight a part of Wallace's history; although the building looks older, the bordello was in operation until the 1970s, so much of the interior features a classic 70s look
W12A0083 - Wallace Mayor Ron Gariton declared the town to be the center of the universe after getting too much attention from the EPA for his tastes; a sewer cover in the intersection of Bank and 6th Streets marks the exact location
S05A0122 - North of town is the Burke Ghost Town including abandoned buildings from the Hecla Mine
S05A0101 - Further up the road is Cooper Pass, where one can access several hiking trails, including the Stateline Trail with views of Pear Lake

Remembering the August 20th 1910 Fire Arthur Fay's Account,. Wallace Idaho
The Music at the beginning sounds like Batman is going to be in this. Sorry he's not in this one.
The Largest Forest Fire in U.S. History burned its way into the South and East sides of Wallace Idaho on August 20th - 21st, 1910. For 36 hours this fire burned an area as large as the State of Connecticut. A 29 year old by the name of Arthur Fay, with his wife Mabel, and two small children, Adelaide and Clark, witnessed the events of that summer.
In the late 1950's, at the age of 73, Arthur recounted those events the best he could. Although he, his wife, and children escaped, he never returned to Wallace. This is his account of that hot, dry, summer (much like the one we have today in 2015).
This presentation of HWPS and Auggie Dog Productions is to remember the event and honor all those families and fire fighters who lost their lives and the men, women, and children who had their lives changed. This one fire forever shaped how forest fires are fought.
Although this is an abridged account, and sound and voice manipulation was used to drive the narrative and make this more entertaining, we have been careful to keep the original intent and feeling of his thoughts (the best we could).
Please visit and like our Face Book Page! You are welcome to share as well. Thank you.

The Sierra Silver Mine | Wallace, Idaho (Vlog)
The Sierra Silver Mine in Wallace Idaho, the center of the universe! About an hour East of Coeur d’Alene, Wallace Idaho claimed themselves as the center of the universe in 2004. So you can imagine the vibe of this town. It’s a bunch of fun, and a bunch of people that don’t take themselves too seriously. It’s also a town with a ton of history. Founded 135 years ago in 1884, Wallace rests in the Coeur d’Alene mining district, a district that produced more silver than any other district in the United States. The history of mining culture in Wallace is what makes the Sierra Silver Mine tour such a fun and unique experience. The Sierra Silver Mine tour is the second most popular tour in Idaho. What’s the first? Watch the video and see!
Go underground in a real mine, with a real miner as your guide, and get a feel for what it was like to live as a miner during the Idaho silver boom. If you don’t have the hour and a half it takes to hop on the trolly and take the tour, you can stop by their historic office in Downtown Wallace. Equipped with its own ice cream parlor.
The mine is chilly so bring a jacket. Open 7 days a week from May 1st through October 15th. Check the website for more details like hours of operation. It’s best to call ahead of time to reserve your spot on a tour, but they do allow walk-ins.

Wallace Idaho - The Center of the Universe - The Silver Capital of the World
Aerial views of Wallace, Idaho, on the famous Route of the Hiawatha.
Silver mining capital of the world in 19th century. It produced more silver than any other mining district in the United States. A mining community with a work hard, play hard attitude, Wallace became well-known for a permissive approach toward drinking, gambling and decriminalized prostitution.
In 1920, Wallace had the greatest number of millionaires per capita in the country – a direct result of the plenteous silver mines in the area. So the burgeoning millionaire class developed a need to showcase their wealth through high-end architecture.
Back in 1960, state and federal highway planners were saying publicly that it would take two years to punch an Interstate 90 freeway corridor through the historic mining town of Wallace, leveling much of the canyon-cramped city's elegant Elizabethan architecture. Confident, they began leveling neighborhoods and condemning business and municipal structures to make way for the new Wallace freeway bypass.
But they neglected to take into account one feisty and ferocious factor: Wallace native son Harry F. Magnuson. Harry Magnuson took the bulldozing agencies to court and stopped the project, in the process saving the downtown of the only city in America to be listed in its entirety on the National Register of Historic Places.
Without Mayor Mangusson's effort, there wouldn't be Wallace, ID today. More about the man who saved Wallace at
Current population: 761 (2017).
The Blackboard Cafe In Wallace Idaho!!! ????????????
Hi Everyone! We're in Wallace, Idaho today. A friend told me about Wallace, so we had to stop here. Many of the stores and restaurants were still closed because it is not tourist season yet.
Wallace is a city in the western United States, the county seat of Shoshone County, Idaho,[6] in the Silver Valley mining district of the Idaho Panhandle. Founded 135 years ago in 1884, Wallace sits alongside the South Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River (and Interstate 90), approximately 2,730 feet (830 m) above sea level.[5] The town's population was 784 at the 2010 census.
Wallace is the principal town of the Coeur d'Alene silver-mining district, which produced more silver than any other mining district in the United States. East of Wallace, the Route of the Hiawatha (rails-to-trails) and the Lookout Pass ski area are popular with locals and tourists.
We just ate lunch at the Blackboard Cafe on the way to Glacier N.P.
Enjoy!
