WIKI: The spa town of Băile Herculane has a long history of human habitation. Numerous archaeological discoveries show that the area has been inhabited since the Paleolithic era. The Peștera Hoților (Cave of the Thieves), contains multiple levels, including one from the Mousterian period, one from the Mesolithic period (late Epigravettian) and several from the later Neolithic periods.
Legend has it that the weary Hercules stopped in the valley to bathe and rest. Unearthed stone carvings show that visiting Roman aristocrats turned the town into a Roman leisure center. Six statues of Hercules from the time have been discovered. A bronze replica of one of them, molded in 1874, stands as a landmark in the town center.[citation needed] Austrian and Ottoman troops clashed here after the Ottoman victory in the battle of Mehadia on 30 August 1788. The Ottomans won the skirmish, took the town on 7 September 1788 and advanced to Caransebeș. It was retaken by the Austrians at the end of September 1789.
In modern times, the spa town has been visited for its supposedly natural healing properties: hot springs with sulfur, chlorine, sodium, calcium, magnesium and other minerals, as well as negatively ionized air. Before World War II, when the first modern hotel was built (i.e. H Cerna, 1930) it remained a popular destination with Western Europeans. During the Communist rule, mass tourism facilities were built, such as the 8- to 12-storied concrete hotels Roman, Hercules A, Hercules B, Afrodita, Minerva, Diana, UGSR, etc. which dominate the skyline. It was visited by all kinds of people, but was especially popular with employees and retirees, who would spend their state-allotted vacation vouchers there, hoping to improve their health. Today, they share the town with a younger crowd. New privately owned pensions and hotels appeared after 1989, along the Cerna/Tiena river banks, spread from the train station to the end of the hydroelectrical dam. Some of the Austro-Hungarian era buildings are derelict for the time being, including many of the baths, because of bad management after privatization.
Filmed with Dji Mavic Air.

In this video, you can see the old Baile Herculane spa resort and the main attractions of the area, such as: the Central park with the Sequoia gigantea tree, Hercules square, Cerna valey with natural pools made by people for treatment, hotel Roman area, the thief cave( Grota Haiducilor), Eye Spring, Iron Bridge, Domogled Mountains, the old Roman sulfuric baths, Hercules statue, casino, Domogled National Park and downtown.
Baile Herculane is the oldest spa resort in Romania and today the resort looks like this. However, there are many sulfurous, thermal-mineral and chlor-sodium thermal springs, indicated for both external cure and internal cure treatments.
Although it is at an altitude of 168 m, in Băile Herculane air is ionized as 1500-2000 meters, due to the 20 thermomineral springs, but mostly because of the beech forests, black pine and fern vegetation in the area.

2nd day - The models visit the historic center of Herculane

Baile Herculane
The spa town of Băile Herculane has a long history of human habitation. Numerous archaeological discoveries show that the area has been inhabited since the Paleolithic era. The Peştera Hoţilor (Cave of the Thieves), contains multiple levels, including one from the Mousterian period, one from the Mesolithic period (late Epigravettian), and several from the later Neolithic periods.
Legend has it that the weary Hercules stopped in the valley to bathe and rest. During the 165 years of Roman domination of Dacia, the Herculaneum Spa was known all over the Empire. Unearthed stone carvings show that visiting Roman aristocrats turned the town into a Roman leisure center. Six statues of Hercules from the time have been discovered. A bronze replica of one of them, molded in 1874, stands as a landmark in the town center.

Ancient ruins and ceramic in North-West Bulgaria
This area, just like most of the country has a lot of ruins and remains of ancient dwelings, spaning from early Neolit to modern times. These particular walls I believe were part of Roman baths and are probably younger then most of the other ruins.
I found the pieces shown in this video laying in the corn and sunflower fields around and sadly many times broken by the agricultural machines. It took me no more then half an hour to gather all that. Also its rarer but there still can be found laying on the ground early iron age spear heads and other weapons, but coins and other objects of collector's interest are nearly gone after the diligent browsing with metal detercors by all kind of dark balkan subjects in the last 30 years.
I plan in some of the next days to have a better look and who knows may be find something really interesting.

Băile Herculane Spa, Romania
The spa was founded by Romans in 102 CE. During their rule, it was one of empire's most fashionable resorts, visited by aristocrats from all the Roman world. Many ruins of aqueducts, thermae, monuments have been erected during that time. Six statues of Hercules have been unearthed since 18th century. A copy of one of them stands in the center of the old town.
After the Romans, the resort was abandoned for more than 1500 years. The Habsburg empire refounded the spa in 1718 preserving its ancient Roman name, Hercule's Baths. During the Austrian rule (1718-1918) somptuous Baroque and Neoclassical buildings have been constructed.
The resort is situated at only 168 m altitude but has a ionizied athosphere similar to the one found at over 3000 m, as result of many waterfall,s pine forests and thermal springs.
The surrounding are breathtaking natural wilderness, with high mountains and crags covered in prehistoric, Mediterranean forests. The area is a national park (Domogled - Cerna Valley National Park), one of the most precious in Europe.
