The Monastery of Saint Ivan of Rila, better known as the Rila Monastery is the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria.
It is situated in the southwestern Rila Mountains, 117 km south of the capital Sofia in the deep valley of the Rilska River at an elevation of 1,147 m above sea level, inside of Rila Monastery Nature Park.
The monastery is named after its founder, the hermit Ivan of Rila (876 - 946 AD), and today houses around 60 monks.
Founded in the 10th century, the Rila Monastery is regarded as one of Bulgaria's most important cultural, historical and architectural monuments.
The whole complex occupies an area of 8,800 m² and is rectangular in form, centred on the inner yard (3,200 m²), where the tower and the main church are situated.
The main church of the monastery was erected in the middle of the 19th century.
Its architect is Pavel Ioanov, who worked on it from 1834 to 1837.
The church has five domes, three altars and two side chapels, while one of the most precious items inside is the gold-plated iconostasis, famous for its wood-carving, the creation of which took five years to four handicraftsmen.
The frescoes, finished in 1846, are the work of many masters from Bansko, Samokov and Razlog, including the famous brothers Zahari Zograf and Dimitar Zograf.
The church is also home to many valuable icons, dating from the 14th to the 19th century.
Porticos in the courtyard have Mamluk influence with the striped painting and the domes, which became more popular in the Ottoman Empire after the conquest of Egypt.
The four-storey residential part of the complex consists of 300 chambers, four chapels, an abbot's room, a kitchen, a library housing 250 manuscripts and 9,000 old printed matters, and a donor's room.
The exterior of the complex, with its high walls of stone and little windows, resembles a fortress more than a monastery.
The museum of the Rila Monastery is particularly famous for housing Rafail's Cross, a wooden cross made from a whole piece of wood (81×43 cm).
It was whittled down by a monk named Rafail using fine burins and magnifying lenses to recreate 104 religious scenes and 650 miniature figures.
Work on this piece of art lasted not less than 12 years before it was completed in 1802, when the monk lost his sight.

Welcome to MELNIK: Bulgaria's SMALLEST CITY // 088
Melnik is the smallest city in Bulgaria, and probably the cutest darned city too. It's well-known for distributing wine (which is stored and fermented in the caverns below the city).
I arrived in Melnik after a full day of hopping buses from Borovets to Samokov, from Samokov to Blagoevgrad, Blagoevgrad to Sandanski, and Sandanski to Melnik.
In Melnik I had a fantastic dinner for just $3 USD. If you're looking for a budget or cheap travel destination in Bulgaria, Melnik should be on your list!

COMMUNITIES & SYNAGOGUES IN BULGARIA
Between World War I and WWII about 48,000 Jews lived in thirty communities in Bulgaria. After World War II about twenty synagogue buildings still existed.
During Communism some Synagogues have been razed and destroyed. Some are used as community houses, museums, art galleries and some converted into churches.
The still remaining synagogues are in very poor condition dilapidated and neglected and are threatened by the same fate as that of the vanished!

Koprivstitsa - the Oslekov and Lyutov houses
Koprivstitsa - the museum town
Oslekov's House
The house was built in 1853 - 1856 by order of the wealthy Koprivshtitsa merchant Nencho Oslekov. Built by Usta Mincho and Kosta Zograf - representatives of the Samokov architectural school, Oslekov's house fascinates with its rich exterior and interior decorations.
Nencho Oslekov took part in the April Uprising. The rebels' uniforms were made in his homespun fabric workshop. Because of his contribution to the Uprising, after its failure Oslekov was captured by the Turks and hanged in Plovdiv.
Lyutov's House
Lyutov's (or Topalov's) house is a unique architectural monument from the period of the Bulgarian national renaissance. It was built in 1854 by masters from Plovdiv, commissioned by Stefan Topalov. In 1906, after Topalov moved to Odrin, the house was sold Petko Lyutov, a merchant from Koprivshtitsa who traded with milk in Alexandria, and became known as the Lyutov's house.
The house is remarkable with its beautiful architecture rich mural decoration. The most striking feature of upper floor is the elliptic vault of the ceiling ornamented with mural medallions and a sun craved in wood; landscapes depicted in the murals were drawn as to owner's impressions from Egypt and Istambul.

The First Ottoman Siege Of Constantinople In 1411
The Siege of Constantinople of 1411 occurred during the Ottoman Interregnum, or Ottoman Civil War, (20 July 1402 -- [5 July 1413), when chaos reigned in the Ottoman Empire following the defeat of Sultan Bayezid I by the Central Asian warlord Timur. Although Mehmed Çelebi was confirmed as sultan by Timur after the Battle of Ankara, his brothers İsa Çelebi, Musa Çelebi, Süleyman Çelebi, and later, Mustafa Çelebi, refused to recognize his authority, each claiming the throne for himself. A civil war was the result. The Interregnum lasted until the Battle of Camurlu on 5 July 1413, when Mehmed Çelebi emerged as victor in the strife, crowned himself sultan Mehmed I, and restored peace to the empire.
Background
Before the Battle of Ankara, the Byzantine Empire was a mere pawn of outside forces for several decades but after the defeat of the Ottomans by Timur, the Empire - for a short while, became a player in Ottoman domestic politics and intrigue.
The siege
The Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Palaiologos supported Süleyman as claimant to the Ottoman throne. They signed the treaty of Gelibolu with the Byzantine regent John VII Palaiologos in 1403, as the emperor Manuel II Palaiologos was traveling in western Europe at the time. By this treaty, Süleyman gave up certain territories along the Marmara coast to the Byzantine Empire in return for Byzantine support during the interregnum and declared himself sultan of the empire in Edirne, the capital in Rumeli of the Ottoman Empire.
However, Musa defeated Süleyman at the battle of Kosmidion in 1410 and Musa pursued him following his escape. Süleyman was captured, while attempting to escape to Byzantine territories, was killed by villagers on February 18, 1411 and Musa found himself as the co-sultan of the European portion of the empire. Musa then retaliated against all who allied with Süleyman, including Manuel II by laying siege to Constantinople in 1411. Manuel II turned to Mehmet for support, who betrayed Musa and set up a new alliance between himself and the Byzantines against Musa. The siege was lifted sometime during the same year.
In two major engagements, in 1411 and in 1412, Mehmet's forces clashed with Musa's, and in both cases Musa was defeated, lifting the siege of Constantinople. In 1413, Mehmet gained the support of the Serbian monarch Stefan Lazarević and the bey of the Turkish Dulkadirids, as well as some of the generals in Musa's army. He defeated Musa's forces in the Battle of Çamurlu near Samokov, Bulgaria. Injured and trying to escape, Musa was spotted and killed on July 5, 1413.

(Please note this video) Saint John of Rila, a hermit canonized by the Orthodox Church, founded the Rila Monastery in the tenth century. His ascetic dwelling and tomb became a holy site and were transformed into a monastic complex which played an important role in the spiritual and social life of medieval Bulgaria. Destroyed by fire in the early nineteenth century, the complex was rebuilt between 1834 and 1862. This characteristic monument of the Bulgarian Renaissance (XVIII-XIX centuries), symbolizes the awareness of a Slavic cultural identity following centuries of occupation. Rila Monastery is the most important spiritual center and literary Bulgarian National Revival, throughout its history which continues uninterrupted from the Middle Ages to today. Reconstruction work was required after a fire and some parts of the monastery, a new church and other buildings dating from the eighteenth century. Well fully meets the requirements of authenticity in terms of location, context, purpose, function and tradition. The spirit and genius of the site are preserved as cultural heritage monastery convient.Le not confined to its buildings, but also contains numerous works of art and documents that constitute a priceless testimony to the civilization Bulgarian and most of which are preserved in the museum or library.

The Holy Places of Orthodoxy - Trip 3
(Contemporaneity and con-temporary?)
- опакото на пространството;
- град и село;
- религия и бохема;
- идеология и форма;
- художници и бълдъзи;
- фотография и скулптура;
