Russia: places to visit | Tula is the capital of Russian weapons
This is our first video in our “Must See” series where I’ll tell you what things in Russia are worth your time to see and what should be avoided at all costs.
↓↓↓↓ Must See ↓↓↓↓
In this episode, we are visiting Tula. Some call it the “city of craftsmen” because ever since Medieval times a lot of tools, weapons, and other goods were made right here.
You’ll definitely feel the productive spirit in Tula at some of its museums, especially the Tula State Museum of Weapons. It is impossible to not notice this unique helmet shaped building that houses the Arms Museum, which is one of the biggest of its kind in the world. If you are at all interested in melee Russian weapons, hunting and sport rifles and/or hardcore military tech then coming here would be a good idea. You will definitely get inspired. If you want to know more about the history of when those weapons were used in medieval Russia then check out the Tula Kremlin right smack in the middle of downtown.
It may seem like Tula is all about arms which are only partially true. Tula is also the home to the totally non-violent Pryanik cookies and inside the Tula Kremlin, there is a museum where they will show you how to make one of these Russian sweets with your own hands. And since they seem to last forever they are a great gift to take back home. Locals consider their Pryanik cookies to be the supreme Russian biscuit with a totally unique flavor that you can only get here in Tula.
Tula may have a unique taste but it also has a unique sound, the sound of accordions! Tula is still a leader in accordion production to this day. Not only can you see accordions but hear them and learn to play songs for yourself. Who knows maybe you can take one home to impress (and/or annoy) your friends and family around Christmas?
All this and more will be in our next video. After that, we will have our first “Must Eat” where you’ll experience the best food that Tula has to offer and see where you absolutely must stop to eat while visiting this fantastic city. Food and vacation go hand-in-hand so our Must Eat series should be a great help to those who want to experience Russian food the right way!

RUSSIA: GOLD CROSS RESTORED TO SMOLENSKY CATHEDRAL
Russian/Nat
A massive 1-point-five tonne gold cross has been restored on top of Smolensky Cathedral, located in one of Russia's oldest monasteries.
Money for the restoration work came from public and private funding sources.
Smolensky Cathedral is located at Novodevichy monastery, one of Russia's premier monasteries.
The difficult task of airlifting the cross into place was held up by lack of funds.
In May of this year the 6.8 million roubles needed to complete the project finally became available from state and private sources.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
The financing for this project is still a sore topic. We could have done this last year. But because there is hardly any financing for this project and we were only able to get the money in May of this year, everything was organized in a very short period of time and with the help of a massive amount of people.
SUPERCAPTION: Irena Borisenko, Director of State Historical Museum, Novodevichy Branch)
Russian film director Nikita Mikhalkov is one of the contributors to this restoration project.
Located only the bank of the southwest Moscow River, the Novodevichy monastery was founded by the Great Prince Vasily III in 1524 commemorating the Russian victory of the seizure of the city of Smolensk in 1514 during the Russian-Lithuanian War.
The cemetery inside the monastery grounds is the last resting place of prominent scientists, writers and public figures including Anton Chekhov, former Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushev and members of Josef Stalin's family.

RUSSIA: MOSCOW: ADOLF HITLER'S SKULL ON SHOW
Russian/Nat
Adolf Hitler's skull has been on show for the first time ever at an exhibition in Moscow.
The exhibition called The Agony of the Third Reich opened on Wednesday and marks the 55th anniversary of the end of World War Two.
The exhibition opened on Wednesday (April 26) at the Exhibition Hall of Federal Archives in Moscow.
Several archive agencies of Russia plus the Russian Federal Security Service (F-S-B), the Defence Ministry and the Foreign Ministry came together to sponsor the exhibition which contains some 150 exhibits.
People visiting The Agony of the Third Reich exhibition are able to view genuine documents and former belongings of Hitler.
Showpieces at the Moscow exhibition include historic materials from the Nazi bunker, the last shelter for the ringleaders of the Third Reich at the end of the Second World War.
Goebbels' diary and other genuine belongings of the leaders of the Third Reich can be viewed together with pictures of the Nuremberg Tribunal with scenes of executions of the main Nazi criminals.
The most graphic exhibit includes a piece of Hitler's skull - complete with bullet hole from where he shot himself.
Nikolai Mikhayko, Director of the Archive of the F-S-B described how the skull became known as that of the former German dictator.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
This piece of skull was taken during an investigation when they were trying to see if this was indeed the corpse of Hitler. This was in late 45 early 46. And the skull was investigated and it was found to be authentic - the skull of Hitler.
SUPER CAPTION: Nikolai Mikhayko, Director of the Archive of the FSB
The Director of the archive is aware that more modern methods could be applied to the investigation towards authenticating the origin of the skull.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
In order to be (even more) sure that it is Hitler's skull, we need modern methods, for example DNA. But I don't know if we will find any living relatives of Hitler. But we have to compare the (DNA of the ) skull with (the DNA of relatives). Maybe we will find people who are willing.
SUPER CAPTION: Nikolai Mikhayko, Director of the Archive of the FSB
Most of the materials at the exhibit have not been on show previously as they had been stored in secret archives as part of investigation files for decades since the end of World War Two.

Nov 8, 2012 Russia_Moscow displays recreation of Imperial Crown for modern times
Russia's Imperial crown has been recreated with a modern twist.
A presentation of the jewelry project Creation of Imperial Crown of Russia in modern interpretation took place in Moscow on Thursday.
The project is timed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the diamond industry in Russia, the flagship of which is manufacturer Kristall and it is the 10th anniversary of the Smolensk Diamonds group.
The Imperial Crown of Russia is a masterpiece that can only be seen in Moscow's Diamond Fund at the Kremlin.
The decision to recreate the crown was made to give more people the opportunity to see its elegance.
Maksim Shkadov, CEO of Kristall, says it is a great opportunity to show the world community that Russia is still among the top makers of jewelry art.
For our 50-year history, nothing like this has been made. For us it is not so much an investment as a certain marketing move, to show what we can do and how we can do it, he says.
During six months more than 60 masters in Smolensk worked to create the crown, which is made of gold and encrusted with 11,000 diamonds.

A note on 'Ivan the Terrible' - in Russia, Ivan IV has the epithet 'Гро́зный' meaning 'Great' or 'Formidable'. So why is he known as Ivan 'the Terrible' in English? Because he was evil or useless or because of anti-Russian bias? No, because 'Terrible' in English also means awesome or formidable - this was well understood when 'Гро́зный' was first translated into English centuries ago, but now fewer people understand this. (see definitions 3 & 4 here: The name stuck, and Ivan IV has been known as Ivan the Terrible ever since.

T-34 Tank Ace - Mariya Oktyabrskaya Fighting Girlfriend
When 38-year-old Mariya Oktyabrskaya arrived with her T-34 tank to Smolensk, the soldiers thought it was a joke. On the tank’s turret, painted with big white letters, there was it’s name - Fighting Girl (Боевая подруга) . It was widely considered as an act of ridicule and almost no one treated her seriously.
However, Mariya, seeking revenge on the Germans, proved very quickly how wrong they were, gaining a reputation and becoming a tank legend. She went on a rampage, her tank caused havoc and terrorized the Germans
She was posthumously recognized as a heroine of the Soviet Union for her achievements during the fighting in the vicinity of the city of Vitebsk.
Museum of Wooden Architecture and Peasant Life, Suzdal, Russia
Pierre Repooc Productions - URL:
Preserved wooden buildings (churches, one summer and one winter, log houses and household buildings) were brought here from villages in the Suzdal district. The churches were constructed of pine, without using nails. Their domes were covered with silvery aspen shakes and the sole tool used to build them was the axe.
