Get Out & Ride a Bike
Watch Carefully the Path One Rides
▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪
I looked at 14 mile route (Rt 287) connecting 2 trails:
C&O @ Brunswick (mp 55)
to
W&OD @ Purcellville (beginning on west side)
I rode Rt 287 to survey the route...
but other roads just further west maybe less traffic but not sure of conditions...3 miles longer & about same climbing .
Not everyone would ride 14 to 17 miles from C&O to W&OD trail but is a possibility while C&O mp 52.5 is not officially passable.
Share Route Brunswick to Purcellville
[Will post complete trip once I bike it this week)
Caution: Route to Purcellville has:
▪ traffic,
▪bridge crossing with no bike lane but some shoulder,
▪2+ mile steep climb 260ft if going south out of Brunswick...or coast all the way going north,
▪then 11 more miles 550 feet rolling country hills...momentum could help sustain on some hills.
Research the route & accept the risks if you travel it.
Normally, people access W&OD trail at C&O mp 35.5 WhitesFerry to the Leesburg area across Potomac River...
BUT
the C&O trail bridge is out at C&O mp 52.5....so wanted an alternative option around C&O washout IF wanted to change trails from C&O but still arrive relatively close at Washington DC...at the memorials...just a few miles from where C&O ends.
▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪
Although many miles extra and few hundred climbing feet to change from C&O to W&OD...you could reconnect back on C&O at Leesburg...
cross the Potomac River back via Whites Ferry (about $2) then ride C&O or camp for free near Whites Ferry about mp 32.
Brunswick to Purcellville by roads
Then to Leesburg by W&OD trail to C&O at mp 35.5 Whites Ferry (30 miles)
Compared to C&O mp 55 to 35 then to Leesburg it is only about 5 additionsl miles but 550 to 800 ft climbing:
▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪
Not everyone would want to ride Rt 287...nor should they if feel they could not ride it...and some routes moreso. Need helmet, road skills, mirrors, high visibility wear, luck against inattentive drivers, Etc. I'm not an expert, and not recommending it...just pointing out a possibility.
Google shows an alternative route Brunswick/Purcellville with about same miles & feet climbing/coasting...but I did not look at roads yet. I show a map print at very end of this video.
W&OD is Washington & Old Dominion. A paved trail from Purcellville to Arlington Virginia area. About 45 miles. As get closer to Arlington a couple other trails and roads take to the Arlington Bridge over into the memorials of Washington DC.
W&OD does not have free camping.

MARYLAND road route...C&O 55 to C&O 51
Road route having challenging risks.
▪700 ft climb up & 700 ft down @ 7.5 miles...
▪is *not* much better than Virginia route.
▪Has high risks also in my personal opinion.
▪Although parts of Maryland route has some shoulder...majority of Rt 464 (4 miles), has 2 very steep hills around 30% slope 1/3 to 1/2 mile long. ▪You will be walking PUSHING a loaded bike.
This WILL PUT YOU IN THE ROADWAY
(very little to no shoulders).
▪Few blind curves. Straighter road than Virginia. ▪Several areas with guard rails & very little shoulder. ▪Traffic can be heavy with large trucks.
▪Drivers wont expect bicyclists in the road (no shoulder) around the blind curves where they cannot see.
▪No notice to stop around curves
▪Road out of Lander area or Brunswick is uphill climb.
NO SAFE route around the closed C&O area in my opinion.

Potomac By Air: Our Nation's River
Its names number more than sixty, from The Elizabeth to the Cheneoow and even the Turkey Buzzard. It has been written about by historians, pondered by philosophers, and cherished by those whose hearts it has won. It has been stolen by states, invaded by foreign navies, traversed by hostile armies and fought over by warring natives, all while serving as a silent witness to manmade history. The Potomac River is the nation’s river.
The Potomac River’s story is also the American story. In its own tale is the telling of our nation’s history – from its humble beginnings in the Appalachian wilds, to the discovery of its immense power as it flows south past Washington city into Chesapeake Bay.
Now, Maryland Public Television explores the river’s natural and man-made history in Potomac by Air: Our Nation’s River. Coming on the heels of MPT’s recent critically-acclaimed Chesapeake Bay by Air, Potomac by Air: Our Nation’s River will tell the stories of the river -- tales that bring alive the history of the Potomac and of our country.
Beginning at the Potomac’s north branch at Fairfax Stone, West Virginia, the film captures the river’s rapid descent through the steep, rocky gorges of the Appalachian Mountains into the Piedmont region of Maryland, exploring the natural and man-made history along the way. The program follows the meandering, widening river south, past the Great Falls, and into the modern power center we know as “D.C.” There, Potomac by Air: Our Nation’s River will capture beautifully shot High Definition pictures of the nation’s collection of monuments and memorials, from the Washington Monument, to The U.S. Capitol, the White House, Jefferson Memorial, the National Cathedral, and many more. Flying further south, Potomac by Air explores the serene natural duality of the river’s life and flow, from non-tidal freshwater to brackish and tidal. Finally, emerging into the Chesapeake Bay, the Potomac is done.
Potomac by Air: Our Nation’s River captures, as no other film has before, the stories of this uniquely American jewel.

Virginia ( (listen)), officially the Commonwealth of Virginia, is a state in the Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States located between the Atlantic Coast and the Appalachian Mountains. Virginia is nicknamed the Old Dominion due to its status as the first English colonial possession established in mainland North America and Mother of Presidents because eight U.S. presidents were born there, more than any other state. The geography and climate of the Commonwealth are shaped by the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Chesapeake Bay, which provide habitat for much of its flora and fauna. The capital of the Commonwealth is Richmond; Virginia Beach is the most populous city, and Fairfax County is the most populous political subdivision. The Commonwealth's estimated population as of 2017 is over 8.4 million. The area's history begins with several indigenous groups, including the Powhatan. In 1607 the London Company established the Colony of Virginia as the first permanent New World English colony. Slave labor and the land acquired from displaced Native American tribes each played a significant role in the colony's early politics and plantation economy. Virginia was one of the 13 Colonies in the American Revolution. In the American Civil War, Virginia's Secession Convention resolved to join the Confederacy, and Virginia's First Wheeling Convention resolved to remain in the Union; that led to the creation of West Virginia. Although the Commonwealth was under one-party rule for nearly a century following Reconstruction, both major national parties are competitive in modern Virginia. The Virginia General Assembly is the oldest continuous law-making body in the New World. The state government was ranked most effective by the Pew Center on the States in both 2005 and 2008. It is unique in how it treats cities and counties equally, manages local roads, and prohibits its governors from serving consecutive terms. Virginia's economy has many sectors: agriculture in the Shenandoah Valley; federal agencies in Northern Virginia, including the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA); and military facilities in Hampton Roads, the site of the region's main seaport.

SUMMARY
=======
James Ewell Brown Jeb Stuart (February 6, 1833 – May 12, 1864) was a United States Army officer from the U.S. state of Virginia, who later became a Confederate States Army general during the American Civil War. He was known to his friends as Jeb, from the initials of his given names. Stuart was a cavalry commander known for his mastery of reconnaissance and the use of cavalry in support of offensive operations. While he cultivated a cavalier image (red-lined gray cape, yellow sash, hat cocked to the side with an ostrich plume, red flower in his lapel, often sporting cologne), his serious work made him the trusted eyes and ears of Robert E. Lee's army and inspired Southern morale.Stuart graduated from West Point in 1854, and served in Texas and Kansas with the U.S. Army. He was a veteran of the frontier conflicts with Native Americans and the violence of Bleeding Kansas, and he participated in the capture of John Brown at Harpers Ferry.
He resigned, when his home state of Virginia seceded, to serve in the Confederate Army, first under Stonewall Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley, but then in increasingly important cavalry commands of the Army of Northern Virginia, playing a role in all of that army's campaigns until his death. He established a reputation as an audacious cavalry commander and on two occasions (during the Peninsula Campaign and the Maryland Campaign) circumnavigated the Union Army of the Potomac, bringing fame to himself and embarrassment to the North. At the Battle of Chancellorsville, he distinguished himself as a temporary commander of the wounded Stonewall Jackson's infantry corps.
Arguably Stuart's most famous campaign, Gettysburg, was marred when he was surprised by a Union cavalry attack at the Battle of Brandy Station and by his separation from Lee's army for an extended period, leaving Lee unaware of Union troop movements and contributing to the Confederate defeat at the Battle of Gettysburg. Stuart received significant criticism from the Southern press as well as the postbellum proponents of the Lost Cause movement, but historians have failed to agree on whether Stuart's exploit was entirely the fault of his judgment or simply a result of bad luck and Lee's less-than-explicit orders.
During the 1864 Overland Campaign, Union Maj. Gen. Philip Sheridan's cavalry launched an offensive to defeat Stuart, who was mortally wounded at the Battle of Yellow Tavern. Stuart's widow wore black for the rest of her life in remembrance of her deceased husband.

SUMMARY
=======
Jubal Anderson Early (November 3, 1816 – March 2, 1894) was a Virginia lawyer and politician who became a Confederate general during the American Civil War. Trained at the United States Military Academy, Early resigned his U.S. Army commission after the Second Seminole War and his Virginia military commission after the Mexican-American War, in both cases to practice law and participate in politics. Accepting a Virginia and later Confederate military commission as the American Civil War began, Early fought in the Eastern Theater throughout the conflict. He commanded a division under Generals Stonewall Jackson and Richard Ewell, and later commanded a corps. A key Confederate defender of the Shenandoah Valley, during the Valley Campaigns of 1864, Early made daring raids to the outskirts of Washington, D.C. as well as far as York, Pennsylvania, securing money and supplies which delayed the Confederate surrender for several months. After the war, Early fled to Mexico, then Cuba and Canada, and upon returning to the United States took pride as unrepentant rebel. Particularly after the death of Gen. Robert E. Lee in 1870, Early delivered speeches establishing the Lost Cause, as well as helped found the Southern Historical Society and memorial associations.

SUMMARY
=======
In the American Civil War, Virginia’s Secession Convention resolved to join the Confederacy, and Virginia’s First Wheeling Convention resolved to remain in the Union; that led to the creation of West Virginia.
