01/02/2014 Нижегородский Государственный Художественный музей - Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum
The Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum is one of the oldest and one of the first museums in Russia open to the public. It was founded at the end of the XIX century in 1894 by decision of the City Duma. The opening of the museum took place on June 25 in 1896 timed to coincide with the XVI All-Russian Industrial Art Exposition in Nizhny Novgorod.
The original collection of the museum first started with graphic cloths, given as gifts by initiators Koshelev and Karelin who created the museum, as well as famous Saint Petersburg and Moscow artists Repin, Makovsky and Ryabushkin. After 1917 nationalized nobility assemblies became the sources of entry for showpieces (Sheremetev, Orlov-Davydov, Abamelek-Lazarev and others). A large role in organizing the museum assemblies was played by Maksim Gorky, who donated to the museum cloths by Rerikh, Nesterov and Kustodiev
Today the assembly of the Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum, formed during the length of over one hundred years, totals at around 12 thousand showpieces. It is a rich and diverse collection of domestic paintings, graphics, applied and decorative art, and popular art. Furthermore, the museum preserves an extremely interesting and significant collection of works by Western European craftsmen as well as a small collection of art from Eastern countries. The Russian art collection of the Nizhny Novgorod art museum advantageously stands out from similar collections of other Russian provincial museums due to its massiveness and completeness. It offers the opportunity to consecutively trace the history of national art from ancient Russian icon paintings up to the contemporary productions created during the final years of the XX century.
The pride and joy of the museum are the productions of Russian painters Rokotov, Brullov, Savrasova, Shishkin, Repin, Levitan, Malyavin, Korovin, Serova, Rerikh, Kustodiev; the works of Russian avant-garde craftsmen: Larionov, Goncharova, Rozanova, Malevich, Kandinsky; and productions of contemporary artists.

Novgorod The Great, Russia. Founded in 859. Father of Russia
Novgorod The Great (“Veliky Novgorod”, don’t mess with Nizny Novgorod) is one of the oldest Russian cities founded accoding to the first mention in the History at least at the 859 year. It is located along the Volkhov River which downsteam from Lake Ilmen.
The history of Russia started in Veliky Novgorod at 862 after it’s residents invited Rurik, the Scandinavian Varangian to manage their matters. Rurik laid the foundations of the future Russian statehood. The dynasty of Rurik ruled Russia for over 700 years after him, until in 16th century, the Romanovs came the Russian authority.
That’s what Novgorod The Great considered as the “Father of Russia”. Tsar Alexander II at the 1000’s year of Russia (1862) ordered to open The Monument to Millenium of Russia at the Kremlin of Novgorod The Great.

Join Totoro the Traveller visiting Veliky Novgorod, one of the oldest cities of Russia. Look at the impregnable walls of Kremlin and take a peek what’s inside there!

Russia is the largest country in the world and it offers so much to see & explore. My Instagram followers know that I am history & architecture fan, and so trip to one of the oldest cities of the country (first mention dates back to 859 year!) sounded like a great idea.
I’m sure you have heard word “Kremlin”, but internationally it is used mostly to identify Moscow and russian government, as that’s where president’s office is located in Moscow. The thing is that this word means citadel, a fortified complex in Russian towns. Veliky Novgorod (Novgorod the Great) has its own kremlin, and that’s where I directed my paws to upon arrival (0:28).
Inside, I felt like I travelled in time: amazing architecture with the jewel - St Sophia Cathedral (dd. 1050) (0:50), towers, bells, all breathing history (especially when excursion passed by with a guide that was dressed in some medieval clothes and spoke very beautifully (1:21)). I was really impressed by monument “Millennium of the Russian Statehood” (1:41): it shows important people and events that made the most impact on Russian history. Spent quite a time watching all the tiny details of this masterpiece. I’ve recognized Peter the Great (2:00), remember the one who created St Petersburg and its amazing suburb Peterhof? If you don't check here:
Out of the Kremlin, I visited impressive Victory monument dedicated to victory of the Soviet Union over the fascist invaders (2:28) and had a look at Yaroslav's Courtyard (0:07), former market place that dates back to 12 century.
I was surprised to learn that Novgorod was one of the Hansa League cities back in time (as well as Stockholm, Tallinn, Bremen, Gdansk, Cologne, Bruges, London, Bergen and others), beautiful fountain was opened in 2009. Loved the design with mosaic emblems (0:09).
I wish I could spend more time in this city and fly the heart balloon (2:18) or take a river cruise (0:22).
Visit to cities like Novgorod is a throwback to old times, unique experience I’d wish everyone to have!

Part 1.
Here I present the first part of two sets of photographs taken at the end of the 19th century of one of the oldest shipbuilding companies in Russia, based in the Sormovo district of Nizhny Novgorod. Founded in 1849 the company Nizhny Novgorod Machine Factory and the Volga-Kama towing and imported Shipping as a diversified company responsible for ....the execution of public contracts.....
Starting with the construction of steam vessels with wooden hulls, the factory moved quickly to steamers and barges with iron plating. The demands of the plant were both for military and civilian orders.
In 1908-1913 the production of even more expanded, produced ships, ferries, Russia's first marine diesel tanker convoy for filling oil field Bibi Heybat Bay (near Baku).
The steam locomotive factory in the complex began in 1898 and 28 locomotives were produced, as well as steam engines
Following the Revolution the Factory was renamed Red Sormovo in 1922 and became one of the largest shipbuilding companies in Russia.

Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin
The Kremlin, the cradle of Nizhny Novgorod, is the single most important and biggest landmark in the city. Some local historians have a simple explanation for why the founder of Nizhny Novgorod Yury (or Georgy) Vsevolodovich, the grandson of the founder of Moscow, Yury Dolgorukiy, built the Kremlin on the high bank of the Volga: he was enchanted by the view of the Strelka and beyond, opening up from the hills. The view is indeed tantalizing, but security must have been his other consideration. Even when the fortress was all wooden, it offered solid protection from the enemies, while the river on the other side served as a natural barrier. The Kremlin was rebuilt in stone in the 16th century. The tea.m. of architects and builders from Pskov was joined by the Italian architect Pietro Francesco, who was known in Russia as Piotr Fryazin.
The Kremlin has 13 towers. Some of them have survived intact, others have been restored. No two towers are alike architecturally and each has its own cache of legends.
Now, as centuries ago, the main entrance to the Kremlin is through St. Demetrios Tower, the largest Kremlin tower. It was named in honour of the Church of St. Demetrios of Thessaloniki, which had once stood in front of it. That church was later replaced by the Church of the Annunciation, which, similarly to three other churches on Kremlin grounds, would not survive the years of Soviet rule.
The 18th-century buildings inside the Kremlin currently house the Legislative Assembly, the Philharmonic and the Arbitration Court. The Soviet-era architectural landmarks next door are home to the regional government, the office of the envoy plenipotentiary of the President of Russia in the Volga Federal District, the city Mayor’s Office and the local Duma. The Modern Art Museum occupies the Czarist-era military arsenal building. The Art Museum is based in the former Governor’s Mansion, and the Military Technology Museum is deployed outdoors. All the military equipment on display was manufactured in Nizhny Novgorod, and all is in good working order. Perhaps the most monumental piece of machinery on show is the T-34 tank, manufactured by Krasnoe Sormovo Factory, standing next to the Eternal Flame and the sculptural memorial commemorating the soldiers of the Great Patriotic War.
Apart from its incontestable historical value, the Kremlin is dear to every Nizhny Novgorod resident on a personal level. Prom parties and lovers hang out on the sloping edge of Kremlin Boulevard till dawn, newlyweds bring flowers to the Eternal Flame on their wedding day, and parents bring their children here for New Year’s Eve parties at the Philharmonic inside the Kremlin walls.

Historic city center
Nizhny Novgorod (Russian: Ни́жний Но́вгород, IPA: [ˈnʲiʐnʲɪj ˈnovɡərət]), colloquially shortened to Nizhny, is a city in Russia and the administrative center (capital[15]) of Volga Federal District and Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. From 1932 to 1990, it was known as Gorky (Го́рький, IPA: [ˈɡorʲkʲɪj]),[16] after the writer Maxim Gorky, who was born there.
The city is an important economic, transportation, scientific, educational and cultural center in Russia and the vast Volga-Vyatka economic region, and is the main center of river tourism in Russia. In the historic part of the city there is a large number of universities, theaters, museums and churches. Nizhny Novgorod is located about 400 km (250 mi) east of Moscow, where the Oka River empties into the Volga. Population: 1,250,619 (2010 Census);[8] 1,311,252 (2002 Census);[17] 1,438,133 (1989 Census).[18]
The city was founded in 4 February 1221[19] by Prince Yuri II of Vladimir. In 1612 Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky organized an army for the liberation of Moscow from the Poles. In 1817 Nizhny Novgorod became a great trade center of the Russian Empire. In 1896 at a fair, an All-Russia Exhibition was organized.

Veliky Novgorod Russia's origins HD
Veliky Novgorod Russia's origins HD
Almost half a way on the road from modern Russian capital (Moscow) to former one (St. Petersburg) there is the ancient city of Novgorod Velikiy (the Great). By now it is a conglomerate of historical, cultural and spiritual monuments worth seeing.
Velikiy Novgorod - one of the most ancient cities of Russia located in its North-West, near the site where the Volkhov river takes its waters from Lake Ilmen, emerged as a political center of Slavic and Fino-Ugric tribes in the mid-9th century, while as a town it was formed in the middle of the 10th century.
The history of Novgorod is closely linked with all major stages in the life of the Russian state. In those times, when the statehood of Rus was just in the making, the Novgorodians invited Scandinavian prince Rurik to keep law and order, thus giving birth to the prince Rurik dynasty that ruled over all Russian lands throughout more than 750 years
