STORY: It is a tiny, 15-centigramme gold bead that can easily be lost between one's fingers. But to Bulgarian archaeologists it is larger than life - they believe it is Europe's oldest processed gold ornament.
A team of archaeologists found it during excavation works at a pre-historic settlement near the village of Yunatsite in southern Bulgaria and dated it back to 4,500-4,600 years BC.
That makes the finding some 200 years older than the gold jewellery that were found at the Chalcolithic (Copper Age) Necropolis in the Bulgarian Black Sea city of Varna in 1972, the oldest golden artefacts ever discovered so far according to Bulgarian archaeologists.
I have no doubt that it is older than the gold found in Varna's necropolis, says Yavor Boyadzhiev, Associated Professor at at the Bulgarian Academy of Science, adding that a laboratory analysis is now pending to determine the purity of the precious artefact.
Even though it's a tiny piece, Boyadzhiev calls the gold ornament a very important discovery for history as it is supposed to have been processed at the very first urban settlement in Europe.
The bead, Boyadzhiev believes, belonged to an ancient society, which moved to the settlement, some 8 km from the modern town of Pazardzhik, from Anatolia in today's Turkey around 6,000 BC.
We are talking about the year 5700 BC, or 5800 BC, which is about 1,500 years before the first urban civilization in southern Mesopotamia, Sumer and associated cultures, Boyadzhiev said about the age of the settlement.
We are 90 percent sure that this gold is produced locally. These people belonged to a highly cultured society and they had sophisticated workshops for all kinds of goods and things, he added.
The team has so far unearthed remains of a prehistoric town with a total area between 100,000 and 120,000 square metres, which had a 2.8-metre high fortress wall. People, who had lived there worshipped birds, the archaeologists believe as they have found more than 150 ceramic figures depicting birds over the years.
Boyadzhiev said that, according to researchers who have worked in Mesopotamia, settlements whose area totals over 0.7-0.8 hectares are regarded as towns.
He said the bead - 4 mm in diameter, which was dug up in a small residential house two weeks ago, dates back from the period, in which metals like copper and gold started to be used for a first time.
These lands were invaded by hostile tribes, coming from the north-east, who destroyed the settlement around 4,100 years BC and caused its extinction.
Bulgaria, a Balkan state of 7.2 million, hosts numerous Neolithic, Chalcolithic and Bronze Age settlement mounds as well as significant remains of Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine urban centres.
The bead will be exposed in the historical museum in Pazardzhik, a museum worker said after showing Reuters the ornament before it was sent for analysis.

COMMUNITIES & SYNAGOGUES IN BULGARIA
Between World War I and WWII about 48,000 Jews lived in thirty communities in Bulgaria. After World War II about twenty synagogue buildings still existed.
During Communism some Synagogues have been razed and destroyed. Some are used as community houses, museums, art galleries and some converted into churches.
The still remaining synagogues are in very poor condition dilapidated and neglected and are threatened by the same fate as that of the vanished!

The Flat mound Yunatsite
A drone view of tell Yunatsite, near Pazardzhik in southern Bulgaria, some 100 km from the capital Sofia, Tuesday, 26 January, 2016. It is one of the biggest tells in Europe with a diameter of approximately 110 m and a height of 12 m above, rising above fields next to a small Bulgarian village by the same name - Yunatsite and located on the terrace of one arm of the old river bed Topolnitsa. The Tell, also known as The Flat mound, contains remains of an urbanized settlement dated at its earliest to the early fifth millenium BC. The resulting earliest city in Europe, called by archaeologists protograd (prototype of the modern city) dates to the mid 5 th century BC, which means that the village is 2,000 years older than the cities, known in Europe. They existed 2400-2000 BC. Archeologists have found numerous traces of the Chalcolithic period and evidence of what may have been Europe's first civilization at a site located near the town of Pazardzhik in southern Bulgaria. Excavations has yielded rich collections of archaeological materials, and the sterile soil has not yet been reached. There is a medieval cemetery (1200s-1500s CE) century at the top of the tell, followed in depth by Roman and early Byzantine periods (200s-500s CE) level, two Iron Age levels (800-600 BCE), a thick layer dated to the Early Bronze Age (EBA) (3100-2200 BCE), a hiatus (4100-3100 BCE) and finally a thick Copper Age (Chalcolithic) layer. It is unknown if the cultural history of the tell begins in the Chalcolithic period or whether older human occupation layers exist. The village hill is a sort of an open-air museum and is included in the system of international cultural tourism. Heavy winter conditions temporary stopped tourism and excavations in this region.

11 Recent Discoveries in Europe
From the shocking discovery of a well preserved Roman artifact in a backyard to possibly the oldest gold artifact in the whole world!

6. Anglo-Saxon Grave Marker
With a little help from crowdfunding, in July 2016 archaeologists got to work on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, which is a tidal island off the northeast coast of England. This was an important center of Celtic Christianity from the 6th Century AD. They believe that this stone here maybe important to solving an enduring mystery of early christianity. The stone dates back to about 1000 AD which was around the time the Vikings plundered the monastery here. The monks who inhabited the island were famous for the Lindisfarne Gospels, which were scrolls believed to be elaborately handwritten and to be some of the finest works of Celtic Christian monks. These gospels are still trying to be deciphered and this grave marker could help playing a role accomplishing that goal.
5. Viking Crucifix
Vikings mythology is truly unique and they supported gods many people are familiar with like Thor and Odin. We know they eventually gave up these beliefs and began supporting christian ideologies. But when exactly did they begin to convert? This crucifix here, found in Denmark may make us rewrite the history books. An amateur treasure hunter came across this pendant in March 2016 which could prove that the Danes adopted Christianity somewhere around this time, and earlier than we previously thought. It’s widely accepted that Denmark was one of the last countries in Europe to embrace christianity so this discovery comes as shocking to many people. The oldest known proof of this come from the Jelling Stones that date back to 965 AD Some people remain skeptical however that this is definitive proof of Christianity in Denmark in the first half of the 10th century and not just some kinds of loot from another settlement. The craftsmanship and detail make it a remarkable find none the less.
4. 2000 Year Old Bowl
You never know what you might find in your backyard these days! It turns out that a man In Alcester, United Kingdom dug up this bowl while planting rhubarb. He had actually used it as a bird bath for 10 years with out having a clue that it was a remarkable Roman artifact from the 1st or 2nd century AD! After taking it to a museum to have it analyzed the research crew revealed that this was one of the most complete Roman bowls they had ever seen discovered in the past 50 years! This is what’s known as a mortarium and was a type of ancient roman pottery and was used for pounding and mixing different foods on. This should certainly increase the real estate value on the property! He generously donated the bowl to the museum where it could be preserved and so the public can learn from his discovery.
3. Oldest Gold Artifact?
This tiny bead may not look like much but some archaeologists believed that they may have uncovered the world’s oldest golden artifact in the world! In 1976 researchers unearthed golden jewelry off the coast of the Black Sea, but this one maybe even older. This tiny bead found in Bulgaria, could date back to 4500 BC and was found in the town of Pazardzhik. It only weighs 0.005 ounces but it’s certainly a big discovery. The dig site was one of the first urban settlements of Europe of a people that were believed to have been of Turkish descent. It was eventually destroyed by hostile tribes who invaded this area in 4,100 BC.
2. Earliest Domesticated Dogs
It turns out that dogs have been man’s best friend for quite some time now. A tooth belonging to a dog was discovered in October 2016 near the ruins of stonehenge that date 7,500 years ago which is nearly 2000 years older than the construction of stonehenge.! Judging by the tooth itself, researchers are able to determine that it was from a domesticated animal. This came from the Vale of York which is an area flat of northeast England, meaning someone gave it a serious walk! It seems like they had some good dog food as well. It feasted on trout, salmon, wild pig and deer. This proves that dogs accompanied man on long journeys and served as valuable tools when it came to herding.
1. Hunted Mammoth Bones
Archaeologists came across hunted bones from a woolly mammoth in North Russia in January 2016. Marks on the bones indicate that the beast was stabbed repeatedly and butchered for its meat. The tusks were also found damaged, suggesting that ancient humans used them for crafting ivory tools. This determines that humans were indeed inhabiting the area of Russia’s arctic seas 45,000 years ago.
