Nara Street Food Guide w/ Extra Mochi
STREET FOOD! We’re back for more in one of Japan’s most traditional cities, Nara.
What was once Japan’s capitol is now a place loaded with delicious street food for humans and deer alike. So, what’s Nara got to offer? I hope you're hungry!
★ YAKI IMO / Grilled Sweet Potato / 200 yen per 100g
★ YOMOGI MOCHI / green mowort mochi filled with azuki beans, slightly bitter, slightly sweet / 130 yen each
★ KAKI NO HA SUSHI / sushi wrapped in permission leaves 1000 to 15000 yen for 8 to 12
★ DORAYAKI / pancakes filled with azuki red bean paste / 600 yen for a large one
★ DEER RICE CRACKCERS / shika senbei that they love to eat / 150 yen per pack
★ SHIKA NO FUN (Deer Poop) / chocolate covered peanuts or soy beans / 350 yen per bag
★ SOFT SERVED ICE CREAM / 350 yen each
Probably the most famous street food is mochi prepared by Nakatanido, a hundred meters behind the Kintetsu Nara Station. The mochi making performace where Nakatani-san opens the shop window and pounds the mochi at lightning speed takes place a few times a day.
Stop by and ask about performance times because you don’t want to miss it. It’s served right after and it’s absolutely the best mochi in Kansai. I went at 11:30am.
Note that the deer are wild animals and although they’re mostly friendly, they will bite, charge and bump tourists. Please be careful especially with children.
Nara is an easy train ride from Osaka or Kyoto and worth a day trip or longer if you like hiking and trekking around nature to see temples and shrines. Perfect when the weather is clear.

Japan Railpass Adventure: Nara
Here we visit the famous bowing deer of Nara. The history is that the monks of the area taught the deer to bown their head and in return they would give them a flavorless cracker in return. How nice of them :). Who ever said that monks dont know how to have a good time? Also at the end of the video I cant remember if I was a bit drunkard, or if I was just really tired. Either way its all good for a laugh.

Ancient city Nara (Japan) Heijō-kyō (平城遷都1300年祭)
Heijō-kyō (平城京, also Heizei-kyō, sometimes Nara no miyako), was the capital city of Japan during most of the Nara period, from 710-740 and again from 745-784. The Palace site is a listed UNESCO World Heritage together with other places in the city of Nara (cf. Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara).
Empress Gemmei ordered to move the Imperial capital from Fujiwara-kyō to Heijō-kyō in 708, so the capital was moved to Heijō-kyō in 710. Heijō-kyō was modeled after Chang'an, the capital of Tang Dynasty China, although Heijō-kyō lacked walls. In the city, there were many traders, merchants of China, Korea, India, and they introduced various foreign cultures to Heijō-kyō through the Silk Road. As a result, Heijō-kyō flourished as Japan's first international and political capital, with a peak population of approximately 100,000. The overall form of the city was an irregular rectangle, and the area of city is more than 25 km2.

Japan's Most Terrifying Bridge: Eshima Ohashi ★ ONLY in JAPAN #33
It's been nicknamed the ROLLER COASTER BRIDGE because of it's super steep slope and appearance of being a bridge to the sky.
That's the Eshima Ohashi Bridge straddling Shimane and Tottori prefecture in Japan.
Facts about the Eshima Ohashi:
★ 1,446 meters long
★ 250 meters of continupus concrete in the center (the third longest Ramen bridge in the world!)
★ 6.1% grade slope on the Shimane Prefecture side
★ 5.1% grade on the Tottori side
★ The bridge needed to be high in the center to allow large shops to pass under.
☆ From the Shimane side, you can get the optical illusion view at the end of the street by the sea.
☆ If you have a good telephoto lens, go even further to the other side of the sea for a better shot. (Map below)
The bridge has a good pedestrian footpath on both sides of the road.
Bicycles are not allowed on the footpath so stay on the main road with the car, to the left side.
There is an observation point on the top that offers sweeping views all the way to Daisen (mountain).
The closest major access point is Yonago Station and airport on the Sea of Japan. From there, take a train to Sakaiminato and rent a bicycle or grab a taxi.
Sakaiminato is also famous for Japanese anime and the main street is like a museum of monsters!
The bridge is a 20 minute ride from Sakai Minato.
Take food with you from the station.
