Pheasant Miao Dance - Maniao Village, Guizhou, China
Up, up, up for many hours we drove into the high mountains of Danzhai County, switching to smaller vehicles, hair-pin turn after hair-pin turn until finally we reached the village of the Pheasant Miao. The drive was its own reward with splendid views deep down into the valley, beautiful terraced hillsides and mountains layered into the far distance.
On arrival we were met by Lusheng flutes and 50 or more women dressed in stiff short skirts that project out from the waist and have short aprons in front and long colorful embroidered strips hanging down over the back to look like pheasant tails. The women's hairstyle is unique to this group. Their hair is treated with tea tree oil to make it stiff and coiled into complicated and imposing structures which are pinned with spiky silver combs in the back. For dancing the women wear delicate silver headdresses with flowers, embossed dangles and long silver pheasant feathers. They made quite a sight as we followed behind them up the steep muddy paths through the village of 500 to the dancing ground at the top.
After the dancing we wended our way back through the village to the leader's home for lunch with the villagers.

Tourists to Langde Shang village will be welcomed by the twelve courses of block-the-way rice wine ended up with firecrackers and sweet Miao folk songs. This is a traditional Miao welcome ceremony to their honored guests and the most ceremonious etiquette in Miao villages.
Then you will be entertained by dances and songs accompanied with Lusheng (a kind of ancient reed-type wind instrument prevailing in Miaos' area) as well as a traditional drum. There are a drum ground and a Lusheng ground built in the pattern of ancient bronze drum surface in the village. Ladies young and old are in their traditional skirts and headwear, ready to dance on the grounds while the men play Lushengs ranging in size from quite short to over three meters in length.

Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village
Located on the north side of Leigong Hill, Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village is about 35 km (22 miles) away from Kaili city; the capital of Qiandongnan, and about 260 km (162 miles) from Guiyang City; the capital city of Guizhou Province.
8. Miao people
I am Cheng Yuxi, Scarlett, a member of the Miao ethnicity in China. As a minority group in southern China, the Miao have a long and fascinating history. One interesting cultural aspect is that the Miao people rarely record their history in writing; rather, they use an oral tradition to pass on their history and culture. This past summer, I visited Dawan, my hometown, to explore the Miao culture, my culture, in more depth, and came away with incredible and engaging results to share.
The record has 8 sections, the stockade village, faith, Miao embroidery, silver, food, wine, folksong, and Miao people.
Following, I have provided text of my video recordings of the Miao people section.
Cheng Yuxi:
Dawan is a small village located in Panxin Town, Songtao County, Tongren City, Guizhou Province. The villagers share a common ancestor whose surname was “Teng”, and more than 90% of the villagers are surnamed “Teng”. They have superbly preserved the lifestyle, architecture, and customs of the Miao people. At the same time, Dawan is also my hometown, the place where my ancestors have lived since the middle of the Ming Dynasty and the place where my mother grew up. Before this visit, my impression of Dawan had been frozen in time in my memories of when I was three or four years old, but during this trip, I deeply experienced the Dawan people’s pride in their Miao identity and saw a different side of life through interviewing them.
When I interviewed a granny aged nearly 70 years old, she expressed great satisfaction with the current life in the village.
Granny's interview:
The village has become better. With electric power and a water supply, our living condition is now extremely good! We had a tough time in the past, and all five children in our family could only make a living by making tofu.
When I heard this answer, I couldn't help but think of my life. Having electric power and a water supply are only basic living conditions in the city, but in the eyes of this Miao granny, these are great blessings. When I asked the granny how she feels about the Miao nationality, she smiled and said with earnest eyes, “I am not good at expressing myself, but I love the Miao nationality. My family are all Miao, and we hold a great affection for this land.”
I also interviewed several children in the village and witnessed their steadfast love for Dawan. Next is a clip from the interview.

During the interview, one answer made a deep impression on me. When I asked what does the Miao nationality mean to you, a child answered without hesitation: something that makes me proud.
During this experience, I felt the ardor of the Miao people for their hometown, and once again renewed a feeling of pride in my identity, a sense of anticipation for my hometown, and a satisfaction towards life.
