Ho'okena Beach Park - Big Island Hawaii
Ho'okena Beach Park Snorkeling with the Family. We got a tip from a friend that this was a good place. We had to ferret out how to get here by talking with a few locals.
At first glance not too impressive, until you get underwater...that's where it's 5 stars. Best snorkeling we've EVER had. Guide books don't really mention this place.
It is south of the Place of Refuge. To get there, get onto Highway 11 and then turn Right at the 101 mile marker. There's a sign that says Ho'okena. Drive this curvy road for 2 miles until the very end where the road forks. Take the Left side, which is a one-lane, with a short stone wall along side it. That takes you directly there.
Snorkeling is good on the Left (facing the ocean from the beach) , but the mind-blowing side is the Right. Nobody was out there, perhaps a bit daunted by the wave crashing. We found it to be quite easily swimmable, even taking my 68 year old dad, and my 6 year old daughter.

BEACHES OF HAWAII. Hapuna Beach Park in North Kohala on the Big Island of Hawaii
Hapuna Beach is about 45 minutes north of Kailua-Kona and maybe 20 minutes west of Waimea. It's the Big Islands longest beach. The northern quarter of the beach fronts the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. Extremely popular with locals and tourist alike. Large shore break can be dangerous so beginners should stay out if the waves are big. Spencer Beach Park, Big Island Hawaii HD1080p
Spencer Beach is the quintessential family beach. It's located near the luxurious resorts on the west side of the Big Island. Plenty of parking, nice restrooms, showers, picnic tables. There's an abundance of turtles and this is thought to be a great spot for whale watching during the winter months.
Wonderful spot for sunsets, and relaxing with family. There's a pavilion for picnics or a place to sneak away from from the sun for a while. It can be windy at Spencer Beach so check the weather forecast.

Mau'umae Beach, Big Island, HI
Ariel view of Mau'umae Beach, Big Island, HI. This is a great smaller white sand beach that I had a lot of fun at. The beach is not affiliated with a particular hotel, but you can enter the beach through the Mauna Kea hotel entrance or hike a few minutes from the Samuel M. Spencer Beach Park. Snorkeling was good on both sides of the beach, but I preferred the left side.

Wawaloli Beach Park, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii
Wawaloli Beach Park is located just south of Kona's Keahole Airport. It is part of the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority (NELHA), a state agency that operates a unique and innovative ocean science and technology park. There are tide pools protected from the ocean waves that are great for keiki (children). The site has bathrooms and outdoor shower. There are numerous picnic benches dotted throughout the park. The north side of the park has walking trails lined with white coral. The park has lots of sandy areas, but not a sandy beach. Video courtesy Action Team Realty, Inc.
