Tour of the Hanoi Hilton, Hoa Lo Prison, Hanoi Vietnam.
An interesting place for sure, the feeling you get walking through a place like this can not be put into words, not by me anyway. This is well worth a visit if your in the area, easy to find and very cheap tickets, only takes an hour or so to walk through and have a look.

Exploring Hoa Lo Prison - Maison Centrale Hanoi Hilton
Hoa Lo Prison (or know as Maison Centrale Hanoi Hilton) in downtown Hanoi has a particularly grim history. This is a place of brutality. A place of torture. It's the hell no-one wants to stay in.
This was a jail built by the French colonial government; its first prisoners arrived in 1899. The French kept mainly political prisoners here along with those awaiting sentencing at the nearby Court of Justice.
Hoa Lo Prison, after all, is a place best known in the West as one of the prisons where American pilots who had been shot down and captured were kept as prisoners of war. John McCain was held here at various times during his five and a half years.

The Story of John McCain and the Hanoi Hilton Prison
Many of you have asked me to cover some topics related to the war in Vietnam while I cycle here. So today I visited the Hoa Lo prison, given the nickname “Hanoi Hilton” by the American POW’s detained there.
I tried to focus on the capture and life of John McCain, an American politician who crashed his bomber after getting struck by a missile over Hanoi. His sobering story is one of many, Vietnamese and American, who ended up spending time at the notorious prison complex.

Hoa Lo Prison (Hanoi Hilton): Vietnam War POW Propaganda Piece

The infamous Hanoi Hilton has been turned into a museum: Hoa Lo Prison Museum. The museum's entire collection related to the Vietnam War has been spun into propaganda. At least the War Remnants Museum in Saigon, though also terribly one-sided, has some truth to it. The Hanoi Hilton Museum is one big lie.
This video is running continuously at the museum, and makes it seem like American POWs were at a peaceful, relaxing camp retreat. It's this kind of propaganda that made believers/traitors out of Jane Fonda and the like.
If you would like to know how prisoners were really treated, do some research. It won't take much to figure out they were severely tortured.

Hoa Lo Prison was such an interesting place for us to visit. Being from the UK this isn't the kind of history we learn about unless we seek it out, and it was an eye opener.
Don't forget to take you student card for a half price discount, and allow around 2 hours to see everything. We walked to the prison from the Old Quarter which took around 30 minutes.

Hoa Lo Prison Introduction (aka: Hanoi Hilton/ Hoa Lo prison museum)
My favourite Hanoi tourist attraction- Hoa Lo Prison Hanoi (aka Hanoi Hilton). Of all the Hanoi tourist spots, all the places to visit in Hanoi... This is my favourite! There are a few Hanoi museums, but this one I feel is highly recommended (despite touristy places spots usually isn't my thing).
Of all the places to go in Hanoi, this one still stands out. (Thus it became the inspiration for my hoa lo prison documentary this time) I haven't hit up all the Hanoi museums yet but I can say this is one of the best museums in Hanoi I have seen so far! (Therefore I put this place as one of the places to go in Hanoi for those who are thinking of going there~). Join me in my Hoa Lo prison introduction~
Note: This place is also known as the Hoa Lo Prison MUSEUM, in case you're googling.

Vietnam Travel Series #3 - Exploring Hoa Lo Prison | Hanoi | Must Watch
In this video you can see the Hoa lo prison, the place where Vietnamese political prisoners were kept by french colonists and later used for American soldiers. This is a must visit places in Hanoi, Vietnam.
The prison was built in Hanoi by the French, in dates ranging from 1886–1889 to 1898 to 1901, when Vietnam was still part of French Indochina. The French called the prison Maison Centrale, 'Central House', which is still the designation of prisons for dangerous or long sentence detainees in France. It was located near Hanoi's French Quarter. It was intended to hold Vietnamese prisoners, particularly political prisoners agitating for independence who were often subject to torture and execution. A 1913 renovation expanded its capacity from 460 inmates to 600. It was nevertheless often overcrowded, holding some 730 prisoners on a given day in 1916, a figure which rose to 895 in 1922 and 1,430 in 1933. By 1954 it held more than 2000 people; with its inmates held in subhuman conditions, it had become a symbol of colonialist exploitation and of the bitterness of the Vietnamese towards the French.

Hoa Lo Prison - Once called 'Hanoi Hilton' | VTV World
Hoa Lo prison was once called the Hanoi Hilton. This used to be the place that held American pilots with special regimes.
Their daily meal cost VND 7, which was equivalent to a senior officer's in the Vietnam People's Army, and much higher than the people who were guarding them.

INSIDE A VIETNAMESE PRISON - Hanoi, Vietnam |Travel Vlog Ep 46
Hanoi, Vietnam - Hoa Lo Prison
Hỏa Lò Prison was a prison used by the French colonists in Vietnam for political prisoners, and later by North Vietnam for U.S. Prisoners of War during the Vietnam War.
After Hanoi, Misha and I travel up North to a place called Ha Giang. It's very common for people to get some bikes and do what's referred to as the Northern Loop... so that's what we do. It's AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL! By the the most incredible motorbike ride we've ever done. We spent 3 days riding through the mountains of northern Vietnam stopping at local villages throughout the way. Such a great experience.

WE GO TO A VIETNAMESE PRISON | HOA LOA PRISON | HANOI HILTON ????????
Day 74 - We go to the Hoa Lo Prison, aka the Hanoi Hilton ????????
Today, Paul and I explore a darker side of history. Built by the French in 1896, this thought-provoking site is all that remains of the former Hoa Lo Prison, infamously known as the Hanoi Hilton. This site once housed Vietnamese revolutionaries, where they were abused and tortured during the early part of the 20th century when France was ruling Vietnam. Later, the Hoa Lo Prison housed Prisoners of War from the Vietnam/American War, including late Senator John McCain (who was captive for 5 years).

Six Years in the Hanoi Hilton: An Extraordinary Story of Courage and Survival in Vietnam
In 1967, U.S. Air Force fighter pilot James Shively was shot down over North Vietnam. After ejecting from his aircraft, he was captured by the North Vietnamese Army and spent the next six years enduring brutal treatment at the hands of the enemy in Hanoi prison camps. Written by Shively’s stepdaughter Amy Hawk, this book is a riveting portrayal of life as an American prisoner of war trapped on the other side of the world. A book signing will follow the program.

Hoa Lo Prison is one of the special historical sites in the capital of Hanoi, built by French colonialists in 1896 in order to imprison the Vietnamese patriotic soldiers who fought against the French colonialists. French name of this prison at that time is Maison Centrale.
Hoa Lo Prison has an area of more than 12,000m2, and it is considered as the most solid building in Indochina including 1 guard house, 1 hospital, 2 houses to imprison arrestee, 1 workshop and 5 houses for imprison convicts. Iron doors and locks system was brought from France. The main gate was built attached to the two-story building, with arch structure.
After 1954, Hoa Lo is the prison of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam regime. During the Battle of Dien Bien Phu in the air of Vietnam War, this prison is where detained American pilots parachuting until after the 1973 Paris Peace Agreement. The American pilot prisoner called Hoa Lo prison is Hanoi Hilton. Among the American POWs, the most famous one is the reigning U.S. Senator - John McCain.
Nowadays, Hoa Lo just remains a small corner as museum for tourists to visit, rest areas are commercial buildings with the name Hanoi Towers. The prison area was moved to Xuan Phuong, Cau Dien, Tu Liem, Hanoi. Hoa Lo still preserves the guillotine that the French colonialist used to cut heads of revolutionary patriotic soldiers who were imprisoned in Hoa Lo prison, such as Nguyen Thai Hoc, Pho Duc Chinh, Nguyen Duc Canh....

Hanoi Day 3 - HOA LO PRISON | A Visit to the Hanoi Hilton | (2019)
Hoa Lo Prison was built in 1896 by the French colonists in Phu Khanh Village.
In the earlier days, the Vietnamese revolutionaries who opposed the French occupation were imprisoned, tortured and executed.
During the Vietnam War, American POWs were kept here and there are relics such as their belongings and senator John MacCain's flight suit when he was captured.
What is left of the present- day Hoa Lo Prison is only the small southern section of the original prison complex.

A Quiet Thought by Wayne Jones
Hoa Lo Prison Hanoi Hilton | Hanoi | Vietnam | 20th November 2016 |
The Hoa Lo Prison, later known to American prisoners of war as the Hanoi Hilton, was a prison used by the French colonists in Vietnam for political prisoners and later by North Vietnam for prisoners of war during the Vietnam War.Located in downtown Hanoi, the infamous Hoa Lo Prison or the Hanoi Hilton was built by the French administration in 1896. Originally intended to hold around 450 prisoners, by the 1930s the number of detainees had soared to almost 2,000, the majority of them being political prisoners. During the Vietnam War, Hoa Lo Prison achieved notoriety as a place of incarceration for dowed US pilots, who ironically nick-named it the Hanoi Hilton. Named Maison Centrale during the French rule – the original sign still hangs over the entrance - most of the prison complex was demolished in 1997 in order to make way for the Hanoi Central Tower building.Thank you for visiting my channel.
