From the border of the Skeleton Coast Park, near the Green Barrel and another of Andrew Rogers' Men of Kaokoland we travel up the Hoarusib River, then cross over and travel up the Hoanib River to make another free camp for the night.

This adventure continues our 4 Wheel drive in northwest Namibia. In this episode Ben and I are going to continue to show you how to explore Namibia independently.
Day 14 starts somewhere near the exclusively private Serra Cafema Resort that we dropped into yesterday unannounced.
We've broken camp and ready to plan the next leg. We're heading west towards the Skeleton Coast NP.
The leaking left rear tire has finally given up and gone flat.
I recognize this guy from Zyles Pass. It's one of Andrew Rogers' Men of Kaokoland.
A stone man welded with metal and a tip box for good luck.
Obviously this place is called Green Drum. Who brings a computer out here? You're supposed to self-register.
Microsoft XP, Ctrl Alt Delete Lets us the backup manual method.
So we have a very hostile environment, low fuel, one spare tire and government discouragement. So I think we should continue this expedition in the other direction.
Namibia is certainly a harsh mistress. It's all thorns. Can easily puncture a tire. Ben is trying to find his way into the Hoarusib River. Snake, lion & elephant country. We camp here tonight.
Ben finally gives up and we find a campsite next to the river.
Today, all the way down south, in and out of the park through the Khumib and into the Koigab river.
Day 15 starts next to the Hoarusib River.
Now the biggest one last. Yeah but we're almost back. Good thing we're in the middle of nowhere. Getting low on fuel and no reserve in the jerry cans.
Last night we plenty of ticks in the car. They're your buddies, not mine.
Ben hears a rattle and has to check it out.
Back out the 'door' of the Hoanib River. This time we turn North rather than south. And what a difference two weeks can make.
Time to find a place to camp. From the Khumib River, 60km down to the Hoanib River,
we took a little detour off the Hoanib to the north and it actually turned out to be much nicer.

The Hoanib River -- lifeblood of the Kaokoveld
In the first in a series of evocative videos, we'd like to share just some of the amazing wildlife sightings and scenic splendours of this exciting wilderness area.
As we carve out an eco-friendly niche for humans in this beautiful, yet stark environment, we are learning more and more about the inhabitants, the rhythms of the desert and the shoreline.
We're also readying the range of activities that will be on offer, from drives, scenic walks and even just running down an enormous Namib Desert dune!
Namibia Part 8: Camp Purros along the Hoarusib River/Hoanib-River in Damaraland
Day 10: In the mornig we leave the camping site of Purros and drive southward along the Hoarusib River and the Hoanib-River. We tried to find desert elefants, but we were not lucky. Extreme beautifull landscape, ideal for people who love lonesome areas.
Tipp: If you intend to travel in this area, do it by a self guided tour or travel in a group were you know the poeple well joining you - otherwise thick air can disdurb the mood (as it's not so comfortable, it's necassery to love such situations in order to have fun).

The Unusual Feature That Sets This Namibian River Apart
Standing in contrast to the barren Namib desert is the nearby Kunene River - a 652-mile lifeline that extends all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. Its defining feature is its unique shade of emerald green.

Flash flood in the Hoanib River, Kaokoveld, Namibia (Dec 2014)
The Hoanib valley in one of the remote areas of the Kaokoveld between the iconic Skeleton Coast National Park and the Palmwag concession.
Every few years heavy rain in the a vast 17,200 km² catchment area causes a flood wave to pass through the valley. Most of this seeps into a large sub-surface aquifer.
A small and intrepid crew doing recce with Wilderness Safaris caught this event just downstream of the Hoanib and Ganamub confluence in December 2014.

From near the Serra Cafema we head towards the Skeleton Coast NP but turn south when we realize we're low on fuel. We discover a Stoneman of Kaokoland at the Green Barrel marker then camp on the banks of the Hoarusib. The next day we return to the Hoanib and camp north of the door rock formation.

Namibia part 7: Kaokoland-Khowarib Canyon, Purros, Himba Village / Travel tips
Day 8: Today we drive to the Kwohaib Canyon. At 4pm we reach Canyon. The campsite there is not the beautifulest one, but OK - it's in the middle of a big dessert. Astonishing is the river, where you shouldn't miss a walk along-that's the best thing to do here; better to arrive earlier so you can spend a longer time at this beautiful place.
Unfortunately, some people in our travel group complain and stir up trouble, because we have to sleep in a tent! As people became nowadays very selfish - don't book a group travel (if necessary better a big group where you can avoid contact to annoying people).
Next day: Purros & Himba-Village
Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp (Namib Desert, Namibia)
Stylish safari camp on a private concession just outside Skeleton Coast National Park, close to the dry bed of the Hoanib River. Set wide apart, seven tented suites and one two-bedroom family unit feature sturdy canvas walls, large glass windows, wooden doors and electric lights (no A/C); each has a shaded outdoor deck and spacious bath. Sophisticated common areas with steeply pitched tented ceilings, including a bar, lounge and dining room (partially enclosed by glass), flow unimpeded into the desert landscape. This adventure continues our 4WD drive in northwest Namibia. Day 8 starts on the bank of the Huab River. The mounting bracket has cracked the actual car body. This is what you do when you lose the key to the lock. All it took was a tire iron and a little bit of muscle.
Ben's auto panel beater service. The weight of the tire is too much for the mount
so on the roof it must go.
We are heading downstream but Ben wants to do a bit of exploring along the way. We need to leave the river and head north, but there is no clear track on our maps.
We need to cross that expanse. We're in a Star Trek crystal forest.
We will have to head back down the way we came and follow the river downstream a bit further before turning north.
It's almost 5 o'clock. We've been driving for hours across the upper plains then came down a tributary and then reached a road going north. But as you can see the road has problems. This is C35, the main highway north in the Skeleton Coast National Park (A restricted area).
Here sand dunes move with the winds and ignore the road boundaries.
Back on the Atlantic coast.
At the Hoanib we exit the highway and enter the riverbed heading upstream. Another dry riverbed. But this one is wide, has no clear tracks and has ample soft sand spots.
Today we started on the banks of the Huab River, drove down to the coast, in search of another free riverbed campsite. We're camped in the dunes, Skeleton Coast NP. The camp is setup. And we're at the bottom of the coastal dunes. With the Atlantic Ocean on the other side.
The next morning Ben loads up the car.
We are the only customers of the Skeleton Coast NP today.
It looks gloomy out there but that is actually coastal fog. A almost constant along the coast for a bout a km inland.
Desert melons with attitude.
So we've been charging our batteries and GPS. Well one of us was charging really long
cause my phone battery is almost dead, so it wasn't me. He had to do the navigation on the GPS.
But Bens got my new device with 15,000 mA. I hope it does the job. So I don't have to push start it? That tiny battery is going to turn over that car? I hope so.
Otherwise we have a big problem now.
We start the day with another sand trap. We made it out again.
No Entry. Conservation Area. We can't enter and we can't exit. What do we do now? Stay here? On this spot.
I'm starting to hallucinate about a big chicken dinner.
This morning we were on the coast. By mid-day we are approaching the Hoanib River and scary memories from the past. Back when we camped here in 2013 we didn't know that 3 lions had made the waterhole their exclusive dinner spot. We got the message after on chased me back to the car. Clearly, young love didn't want humans around as a distraction.
Ben wants to take a lunch break in that spot and reminisce. A high protein lunch it seems. Then it was time to top up the tank. And top up the leaky left rear tire.
As we get closer to the Hoanib River the vegetation increases as does the wildlife. Fresh elephant droppings. Reminds me of 2013 when we were here and came across a herd of desert elephants dusting.
The door is a narrow gap though which the river must flow when water is present.
Water. Time for Ben to do some detailing.
Well a dust storm. I'm not sure if there is more dust inside or outside.
From the lion camp we made our way up the Hoanib River and out onto a dirt road leading to the town of Sesfontein. We were told the diesel truck might arrive in a few days. So we checked out the old German fort, now a Lodge for accommodation options. Very high-end and above our US$ 10 per night budget. We opted for an expensive dinner to get free camping in their defunct campground.

Taken in Kaokoland, Namibia where we were driving in desert, rocky, sand, water and extreme 4x4 conditions.
It was a great trip with beautiful scenery and lots of dust. The beautiful Kunene river with the Epupa falls was a sharp contrast to the desert in the beginning of the trip.
