By now, it is an oft told tale as to how former Peace Corps volunteer and college professor Jim Turner was so inspired by Tolkien's Lord of the Rings books that he founded a bar called Hobbit House entirely staffed by little people. Since it opened in 1973 along mabini St., Malate, the bar has become so famous that it has since opened a branch in boracay.

From its original location in 1801 Mabini St., regulars now flock to its new site in M.H. del Pilar St., which is just a short walk away from the Ermita Church. The bar was moved to its new address in 2007.

Unlike the unassuming façade of its old building, Hobbit House can now be easily seen from the street with its huge mural, which features the lead characters of Tolkien's book. Up front is a huge, colorful circular door. Once guests pass through the door, a bell will be rung to announce their entrance.

It's a city renowned for its hospitable and keenly competitive bars, but this one has a unique attraction.
The Hobbit House in the Philippines' capital, Manila, boasts more than just food, drink and music.
Its staff are a small but significant part of its pulling power.
This is Hobbit House, a pub located within the former red light district of Manila.
The venue has been attracting customers for 20 years.
But it's not the great line-up of bands, the food, or even glamorous bar-girls that's pulling in the crowds.
The customers come to Hobbit House for its unique staff...

The pub employs 12 dwarves who work alongside staff of normal height.
They mingle with customers, serving drinks.
The dwarves don't feel exploited - they say working at Hobbit House gives them an opportunity to make a decent living.

Enchanted Hobbit House in the Philippines 4K

Explore the enchanted “Hobbit House” in the Philippines.

The “Hobbit House” is inspired by J.R.R Tolkien’s “Hobbit” in which the houses are small and fantasy-like just like the movie, designed from earthly materials: grasses, woods, and rocks. It has a 5-feet door and does not need an air condition inside as the temperature drops up to 14° Celcius at night.

2. Once you arrived at Sumpong, there are many available “habalhabal” or motorcycles for you to ride one way going to Imbayao, Sinaburan with Php 150 fare.

The Hobbit House in its present incarnation for more than two and a half decades in the bohemian district of Malate is closing down by end of March 2007 and moving to a new location in Ermita, to give way to another high-rise building but with none of the character and spirit that the previous structures before it had. Here, Freddie Aguilar sings his classic 'Magdalena' in what may be one of his final echoes in performance at ye old Hobbit House of Malate.
